Patterns of habitat use of breeding ducks and grebes in the western boreal forest

Canada’s boreal forest provides important breeding habitat for 12 to 14 million migratory birds annually. Nonetheless the ecology of boreal wetlands remains poorly understood. Over the last 40 years, rapid industrial development with little attention to conservation has been ongoing in the region. Apparent population declines of species, such as that of lesser scaup have raised concerns about the quality of western boreal wetlands. This is one of very few studies demonstrating patterns in brood-rearing habitat use by ducks and grebes in the Canadian western boreal forest. In this study, wetland characteristics associated with brood-rearing wetlands of American wigeon (Anas Americana), green-winged teal (Anas crecca), mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), lesser scaup (Aythya affinis), ring-necked duck (Aythya collaris), horned grebe (Pondiceps auritus), and red-necked grebe (Podiceps grisegena) were investigated on 75 wetlands near Yellowknife, NT, Canada. I used Principle Components and regression analyses to delineate patterns of habitat use by breeding water birds. Results indicate that physical characteristics of wetlands, area in particular, had stronger correlations with brood-rearing habitat then did invertebrate abundance. Invertebrate groups positively associated with brood-rearing wetlands included: Amphipoda, Pelecypoda, and or Ephemeroptera. Breeding diving ducks had negative iv associations with Dipteran abundance. Diving ducks and red-necked grebes were more strongly correlated with habitat variables then were dabbling ducks and horned grebes. Brood-rearing wetlands of the smallest birds in the study, green-winged teal and horned grebe, had the fewest and weakest associations with habitat variables. / xiii, 97 leaves ; 29 cm

Ecological and anthropogenic constraints on waterbirds of the Forth Estuary : population and behavioural responses to disturbance

Disturbance from engineering works is an increasing problem in terrestrial and marine ecosystems throughout the world. Many reported declines in population size, breeding success and body condition have been diagnosed as the result of anthropogenic disturbance, however little is known about the effect of long-term disturbance from large-scale engineering works. Understanding the mechanisms by which animals respond to anthropogenic activities is fundamental to explaining interactions, and resolving potential conflicts between humans and wildlife. This thesis focuses on the factors affecting the habitat use and foraging decisions in wintering shorebirds and wildfowl. The first half of this thesis considers the direct and indirect impacts on waterbirds of a major engineering project in central Scotland; construction of the new Clackmannanshire Bridge at Kincardine-on-Forth. For individual bird species in close proximity to the bridge site, round-the-clock construction work had consequences ranging from neutral to considerably negative. Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo declined in the area, probably as a result of the disturbance of an important low tide roost. Redshank Tringa totanus, previously abundant in the prey-rich areas adjacent to the construction site, were displaced into poorer areas for most of the construction period; where they may also have suffered from increased interference competition and elevated risk from raptorial predators. Some positive effects of industrial development were also revealed; radio-transmitters combined with tilt-switch posture sensors indicate that Redshank were able to capitalise on the improved nocturnal visibility in areas around Grangemouth docks to assist with foraging and predator detection. Evidence is presented that birds switched foraging strategy (from sight to touch feeding) depending on ambient light levels; whereby artificial light was used in a similar manner to moonlight to assist with prey detection. Redshank also avoided riverine areas at night that were used frequently by day, probably in response to an elevated threat from nocturnal predators. As the predator landscape changes from day into night, birds adopt different strategies to minimise the risk from nocturnal predators. It is clearly important, therefore, that information on nocturnal distributions is available to inform decisions on site management, especially where anthropogenic activity continues throughout the diel cycle. Behavioural decisions were shown to vary widely within a species depending on individual state, metabolic demands and previous exposure to human disturbance. Prey resources were shown to change dramatically over the course of a winter. In response to this decline, the home range of Redshank contracted over a winter season. Similarly, animals responded less and took greater risks in response to experimental disturbance events later in the winter than earlier in the winter, and on days when the temperature was lower. This effect was strongest for individuals occupying heavily disturbed areas, which were possibly already compensating for lost feeding time and a negative energy balance. The results were consistent with the hypothesis that those individuals that respond most obviously to human disturbance were those least likely to suffer fitness consequences. This is the opposite from what is commonly assumed when behaviour is used as an index of disturbance impacts, most notably in the use of flush distance in the design of wildlife buffer zones. In conclusion, this study demonstrated various negative impacts of disturbance, including local displacement, due to construction activity on overwintering waterbirds. It also revealed two key, but poorly understood, phenomena relating to mechanisms for coping with anthropogenic disturbance: routine utilisation of artificial light to extend night-time feeding opportunities amongst Redshank and an adaptive flexibility in escape responses across a range of species under varying conditions of risk.

In total, 76 birds, mainly breeding females, were captured in years 2007-2009. Birds were inspected for the presence of avian influenza (AI) viruses and the AI antibodies. They were inspected as well for the presence of bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi s. l. and Anaplasma phagocytophilum and protozoan Leucocytozoon simondi in blood. The feces were examined for the oocysts and eggs of intestinal parasites. AI viruses were found in 4 cases, while over 80% of inspected birds had AI antibodies. Bacteria B. burgdorferi s. l. and A. phagocytophilum were found in 2 and 1 case respectively. Protozoan L. simondi was not found in any blood smear. The oocysts from protozoan genera Eimeria and Tyzzeria and eggs from roundworm genera Capillaria, Amidostomum and Echinuria were observed in feces. Statistical analyses were due to the small size of our data set inconclusive.

Effects of Olfactory and Visual Predators on Nest Success and Nest-Site Selection of Waterfowl in North Dakota.

Selecting a nest site is an important decision for waterfowl. Because most nest failure is due to depredation, the primary selective pressure in choosing a nest site should be to reduce depredation risk. This task is difficult because predators use differing tactics to locate nests, such as olfactory or visual cues. I investigated several components of waterfowl nest-site selection and success on sites with shelterbelts (planted tree-rows) in North Dakota, during the 2006 and 2007 nesting seasons. I found that meteorological conditions impacted nest depredation; artificial nests were more likely to be depredated when either temperature or dew point was high. These meteorological conditions should improve foraging efficiency for olfactory predators by increasing odor concentration. Waterfowl selected nesting sites with greater visual concealment than random locations (lateral concealment). However, the only difference found between successful and depredated nests was lateral dispersion, an olfactory concealment characteristic. Nest density was higher in areas without shelterbelts than in areas near shelterbelts. Nest success for waterfowl decreased as shelterbelt height increased. Other shelterbelt characteristics, like porosity and orientation, did not affect nest success or nest density. Given that nest predators differ in foraging habitat, temporal patterns of activity, and searching modalities, nest site characteristics that conceal the nest from 1 predator species may increase its vulnerability to another predator. For instance, risk due to olfactory predators should be reduced near shelterbelts because locating nests would be more difficult as turbulence is generated by the shelterbelts. Concomitantly, shelterbelts could also increase the presence of visual predators, by providing nesting sites and vantage points. In my study, any benefits shelterbelts provide in reducing nest depredation by olfactory predators may have been offset by increasing nest depredation from visual predators. Hence nesting near shelterbelts was neither a liability nor a benefit to ducks.

Limited published data exists on the Australian duck industry, particularly in relation to the nutritional requirements of the commercial duck (Anas Platyrhynchos). A series of seven experiments was designed to determine whether current nutritional recommendations for energy, lysine, methionine, threonine and tryptophan were sufficient to optimise growth, feed efficiency, and carcass characteristics of the duck. The ability of the duck to perform diet self selection was then examined for its potential use in the Australian industry. The outcome of the diet self selection experiments showed that ducks sometimes self select diets when offered choices from four diets differing in nutrient density. A key outcome of this research was the development of a revised set of nutrient specifications designed to maximise the performance of the Australian commercially grown duck. Predation by great horned owls and red-tailed hawks in a prairie landscape enhanced for waterfowl

Several species of raptors are found in prairie landscapes managed and enhanced for waterfowl. Red-tailed Hawks (Buteo jamaicensis ) and Great Horned Owls (Bubo virginianus) may benefit from such management in a manner that is counter to its goals and objectives; that is, waterfowl may comprise a significant proportion of their diet, resulting in a decline in waterfowl numbers. The overall aims of this three-year study were to determine whether the feeding habits of the two raptor species are selective and to determine if waterfowl is a preferred prey group. The diet was determined through pellet analysis, prey remains and direct nest observations during the nestling growth period. Availability of most prey species was assessed through small mammal trapping and by conducting waterfowl censuses. It was determined that both raptors select for duck species. The average waterfowl biomass consumed per nestling represented 21.5% of the total biomass consumed for Great Horned Owls and 23.5% for Red-tailed Hawks. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
