Sensemaking in Dynamic Business Environments: Managerial Practices in the Oil and Gas Sector in Bahrain

Husain, Ismaeel M. January 2021 (has links)
It has become the norm for organisations in many industrial sectors to constantly operate in dynamic, uncertain and challenging business environments. Technology, regulations, global economy, changing political actions and international conditions are all changing rapidly, creating dynamic business conditions for organisations to understand, react to and thus survive. The Oil and Gas (O&G) sector which is the backbone of the economic growth for many countries in the Middle East region is not an exception to the real world of business filled with uncertainties. The construction of meaning or sensemaking is a prerequisite management skill for complex problem solving and decision-making for survival in today’s increasingly dynamic business environments. Current literature on sensemaking tends to focus on senior management’s role in the process, overlooking the critical role middle management teams play in the construction of meaning. Further, although sensemaking literature illustrates the influence of sensegiving and sensebreaking on sensemaking, there is limited empirical research in existing literature on how middle management teams apply sensegiving and sensebreaking to influence the process. Finally, this research fills a gap in sensemaking research in developing countries to decolonise Western-based research and ensure that local culture and ideologies are taken into account. In particular, it provides important data for the O&G sector in Bahrain, which is important for the Middle East region. Therefore, this research investigates how middle management teams use sensemaking to understand complex problems and how they apply sensegiving and sensebreaking to influence the sensemaking process in Bahrain’s O&G sector. The data was gathered using a qualitative approach using in-depth semi-structured interviews, middle management team meeting observations and operational documents review. The findings include seven themes and 26 sub-themes are visualised in a four-step sensemaking process framework. This framework also illustrates the sensemaking triggers and properties, as well as the influences and sources of information middle management teams adopt to construct meaning in dynamic O&G environments. Further, the four-step sensemaking process framework incorporates the different sensegiving and sensebreaking techniques embraced. This research extends the existing sensemaking literature by providing a descriptive empirical framework to better understand middle management team sensemaking, sensegiving and sensebreaking in dynamic O&G environments. This four-step sensemaking process framework gives middle management teams a way to organise information related to events in an objective manner, enabling them to develop effective reactions to a fast-changing environment. The framework also offers human resource practitioners a platform to assess and develop middle management sensemaking skills.

Smarta tjänsters påverkan på anställdas arbetsformer inom detaljhandeln : En kvalitativ studie om anställdas uppfattningar om användandet av smarta tjänster / The impact of smart services on employees working methods in retail : A qualitative study on employees’ perceptions of the use of smart services

Broman, Malin, Brännlund, Emmy January 2023 (has links)
The increased spread of digital technology and smart services has changed the way employees work in retail in a variety of ways. It has therefore changed the collaboration of actors, which has brought opportunities and challenges for employees and businesses. Varying needs of actors influence the business's decision to apply smart services in physical stores. The purpose of this qualitative study is to study IT-dependent work systems in the retail trade, which examines employees’ varied perceptions of the impact of smart services on work forms. There are complexities in collaboration between actors as well as resources and systems that can affect employees’. Method choices have been made in the form of in-depth interviews to collect deeper insights and perspectives on employees’ perceptions of how work forms are affected by smart services. A selection of respondents has been made in consideration of the socio-technical perspective, which includes work roles where employees’ interact with digital technology. In-depth interviews have been conducted with six respondents from varied operations within the retail trade. The data collection has been based on in-depth interviews where a deductive conceptual framework has been created to increase understanding and gain deeper insights into the subject. The conclusion of the study shows that smart services change the way employees’ work through increased efficiency and reduced workload. The impact of smart services also shows that the availability of information and customer interactions is changing. It also includes adaptations by employees’ when applying smart services that require increased knowledge as it affects the performance of work methods. A further part of the conclusion shows that smart services have a positive and negative effect on employees’ working methods in the retail trade

Business continuity of energy systems : a quantitative framework for dynamic assessment and optimization / Un cadre quantitatif pour l'évaluation et l'optimisation dynamique de la continuité d'activité des systèmes énergétique

Xing, Jinduo 03 December 2019 (has links)
Business continuity management is a comprehensive framework to prevent the disruptive events from impacting the business operations, quickly recovering business and reducing the corresponding potential damages for energy system, such as nuclear power plants (NPPs). This dissertation provides discussions on the following aspects: developing appropriate risk assessment methods in order to integrate condition monitoring data and inspection data for a robust and real-time risk profile updating and prognostics. To account for the uncertainty of condition monitoring data, a hidden Markov gaussian mixture model is developed to model the condition monitoring data. A Bayesian network is applied to integrate the two data sources. For improving applicability of business continuity in practice, time-variant variables regard business continuity index, e.g. component degradation, time-dependent revenue, etc are taken into consideration in the business continuity modelling process. Based on the proposed business continuity index, a joint optimization method considering all the safety measures in event evolvement process including prevention stage, mitigation stage, emergency stage and recovery stage is developed to enhance system business continuity under limited resources. The proposed methodologies are applied to NPP against disruptive event.

Personalised wearable cardiac sensor services for pervasive self-care

Krupaviciute, Asta 20 December 2011 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of the thesis is to design a web services architecture that shall support the automatic determination of a personalised sensor-system, which is embedded in smart garments, and which shall be used in self-care in order to allow a profane user to record himself a personal electrocardiogram (ECG), at anytime and anywhere. The main challenge consists in the intelligent and dynamic orchestration of context-aware business services that supply the user with an optimal personalised solution, while mastering the system's complexity: context dependent user and system interactions, knowledge extraction from subject-specific vital signs, services reconfiguration automation. The solution to this challenge is to create an Ambient Intelligence which goes beyond Ubiquitous Computing and is capable to replace an expert by proposing an Intelligent Assistance to any citizen. We propose a methodology expressed in terms of Data and Model driven Service Oriented Architecture (DM-SOA), which provides a framework for the production of context-aware intelligent business services. This architecture supports the automation of sophisticated and personalised expert activities, which apply professional knowledge to process an individual case. The proposed solution is based on a new dynamic business process modelling approach and in its implementation via automatically reconfigurable services. It consists in setting-up an intelligent environment based on a business process ontology of context-aware concepts and on related context handling rules for services orchestration. A core-ontology has been designed to support the automation of expert activities related to decision-making. The soundness of the method and of the underlying decision-making techniques has been demonstrated in the cardiology domain for selecting the most adequate subject-specific sensor-system, characterised by its ability to yield for an ECG signal of similar diagnostic content than a standard 12-lead ECG. We propose the design of a new three modalities sensor-system prototype as a response to the need of sensor-systems used on demand in self-care situations and ensuring diagnostic quality signals recordings. This prototype has been tested on a set of healthy volunteers presenting various characteristics in age, sex and morphology. In this context, Ambient Intelligence is demonstrated as an ensemble of professional quality services ready to use by profane users. These services are accessible pervasively, trough the objects people work with / wear on / use each day, and provide an appropriate guidance to the non-competent users. Such an Ambient Intelligence approach strongly supports the vision of an Information Society which corresponds to the long-term goal of the EU Information Society Technologies Research Programme that aims to ease knowledge access. The future healthcare will benefit from this approach and will significantly improve patient care.

Krupaviciute, Asta 20 December 2011 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to design a web services architecture that shall support the automatic determination of a personalised sensor-system, which is embedded in smart garments, and which shall be used in self-care in order to allow a profane user to record himself a personal electrocardiogram (ECG), at anytime and anywhere.
