A unified framework for the analysis and design of networked control systems

Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / This thesis studies control systems with communication constraints. Such constraints arise due to the fact that practical control systems often use non-transparent communication links, i.e., links subject to data-rate constraints, random data-dropouts or random delays. Traditional control theory cannot deal with such constraints and the need for new tools and insights arises. We study two problems: control with average data-rate constraints and control over analog erasure channels with i.i.d. dropout profiles. When focusing on average data-rate constraints, it is natural to ask whether information theoretic ideas may assist the study of networked control systems. In this thesis we show that it is possible to use fundamental information theoretic concepts to arrive at a framework that allows one to tackle performance related control problems. In doing so, we show that there exists an exact link between control systems subject to average data-rate limits, and control systems which are closed over additive i.i.d. noise channels subject to a signal-to-noise ratio constraint. On the other hand, in the case of control systems subject to i.i.d. data-dropouts, we show that there exists a second-order moments equivalence between a linear feedback system which is interconnected over an analog erasure channel, and the same system when it is interconnected over an additive i.i.d. noise channel subject to a signal-to-noise ratio constraint. From the results foreshadowed above, it follows that the study of control systems closed over signal-to-noise ratio constrained additive i.i.d. noise channels is a task of relevance to many networked control problems. Moreover, the interplay between signal-to-noise ratio constraints and control objectives is an interesting issue in its own right. This thesis starts with such a study. Then, we use the resultant insights to address performance issues in control systems subject to either average data-rate constraints or i.i.d. data-dropouts. Our approach shows that, once key equivalences are exposed, standard control intuition and synthesis machinery can be used to tackle networked control problems in an exact manner. It also sheds light into fundamental results in the literature and gives (partial) answers to several previously open questions. We believe that the insights in this thesis are of fundamental importance and, to the best of the author's knowledge, novel.

Performance Analysis of Maximal-Ratio Combining and Space-Time Block Codes with Transmit Antenna Selection over Nakagami-m Fading Channels

Master of Engineering (Research) / The latest wireless communication techniques such as highspeed wireless internet application demand higher data rates and better quality of service (QoS). However, transmission reliability is still degraded by harsh propagation channels. Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems can increase the system capacity and improve transmission reliability. By transmitting multiple copies of data, a MIMO system can effectively combat the effects of fading. Due to the high hardware cost of a MIMO system, antenna selection techniques have been applied in MIMO system design to reduce the system complexity and cost. The Nakagami-m distribution has been considered for MIMO channel modeling since a wide range of fading channels, from severe to moderate, can be modeled by using Nakagami-m distribution. The Rayleigh distribution is a special case of the Nakagami-m distribution. In this thesis, we analyze the error performance of two MIMO schemes: maximal-ratio combining with transmit antenna selection (the TAS/MRC scheme) and space-time block codes with transmit antenna selection (the TAS/STBC scheme) over Nakagami-m fading channels. In the TAS/MRC scheme, one of multiple transmit antennas, which maximizes the total received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), is selected for uncoded data transmission. First we use a moment generating function based (MGF-based) approach to derive the bit error rate (BER) expressions for binary phase shift keying (BPSK), the symbol error rate (SER) expressions for M-ray phase shift keying (MPSK) and M-ray quadrature amplitude modulation (MQAM) of the TAS/MRC scheme over Nakagami-m fading channels with arbitrary and integer fading parameters m. The asymptotic performance is also investigated. It is revealed that the asymptotic diversity order is equal to the product of the Nakagami fading parameter m, the number of transmit antenna Lt and the number of receive antenna Lr as if all transmit antenna were used. Then a Gaussian Q-functions approach is used to investigate the error performance of the TAS/STBC scheme over Nakagami-m fading channels. In the TAS/STBC scheme, two transmit antennas, which maximize the output SNR, are selected for transmission. The exact and asymptotic BER expressions for BPSK are obtained for the TAS/STBC schemes with three and four transmit antennas. It is shown that the TAS/STBC scheme can provide a full diversity order of mLtLr.

Charm studies in emulsion

Neutrino-nucleon scattering is an effective way to investigate the inner structure of the nucleon, to extract the Standard Model parameters and to explore heavy quarks production dynamics. In the last decades, several experiments have been constructed to study weak interactions of neutrinos with nucleons. One of them was CERN-WA95 experiment operated by the CHORUS collaboration. It is based on a hybrid detector with nuclear emulsion as a target followed by electronic devices. Nuclear emulsion provides three dimensional spatial information with an outstanding resolution of the order of one micron. Therefore, it is ideal to detect short-lived particles. A special technique has been developed to reconstruct events in the emulsion which allows to perform a detailed investigation of events such as charmed hadrons production by neutrinos. As a result, the backround in the selected charm sample is up to six times lower compared to similar experiments. Such a method also permits to make direct measurements of some quantities instead of model fittings. This thesis is devoted to the study of the muonic decays of charmed hadrons and their production in emulsion. Manual inspection of charm events gives a complete reconstruction of charm decay topology. The extraction of the inclusive muonic branching ratio is based on the ratios per number of charged daughters in charm decay. Such an approach allows to separetely measure the muonic branching ratios for neutral and charged charm particles. Finally, normalization of the events with a muon in the final state to the charged current events gives dimuon production rate which is found compatible with the previous experiments. On top of that, preliminary results are shown for Bjorken x distribution and for a direct measurement of the Vcd Cabbibo-Kabayashi-Maskawa matrix element.

Rapid Replication of High Aspect Ratio Molds for UV Embossing

This paper describes a promising fabrication technique for rapid replication of high aspect ratio microstructured molds for UV embossing. The process involves casting silicone rubber on a microstructured master, replicating an epoxy mold using the PDMS rubber mold and finally, metallizing the surfaces of the epoxy mold by electroless plating nickel (EN). The preliminary study suggests that this technique is feasible for rapid replication of high aspect ratio molds for UV embossing. Scheduling to Minimize Average Completion Time Revisited: Deterministic On-line Algorithms

We consider the scheduling problem of minimizing the average weighted completion time on identical parallel machines when jobs are arriving over time. For both the preemptive and the nonpreemptive setting, we show that straightforward extensions of Smith's ratio rule yield smaller competitive ratios compared to the previously best-known deterministic on-line algorithms, which are (4+epsilon)-competitive in either case. Our preemptive algorithm is 2-competitive, which actually meets the competitive ratio of the currently best randomized on-line algorithm for this scenario. Our nonpreemptive algorithm has a competitive ratio of 3.28. Both results are characterized by a surprisingly simple analysis; moreover, the preemptive algorithm also works in the less clairvoyant environment in which only the ratio of weight to processing time of a job becomes known at its release date, but neither its actual weight nor its processing time. In the corresponding nonpreemptive situation, every on-line algorithm has an unbounded competitive ratio

Inhaled Aerosols Targeted via Magnetic Alignment of High Aspect Ratio Particles: An In Vivo and Optimization Study

An in vivo study with 19 rabbits was completed. Half of the exposed rabbits had a magnetic field placed externally over their right lung. Magnetic resonance images of the lungs were acquired to determine the iron concentrations in the right and left lung of each animal. The right/left ratio increased in the middle and basal regions of the lung. With further optimization, this technique could be an effective method for targeted drug delivery. Additionally, the feasibility of increasing the length of high aspect ratio particles for improved targeted drug delivery was explored. An ultrasonic nozzle was pulsed into a large evaporation chamber. Individual particles were found to be double the original length. However, due to locally increased humidity the droplets were not dried, except with the use of an orifice to rapidly accelerate and break apart the larger droplets. The complications associated with this method make it an undesirable and unfeasible method of creating longer particles.

Graphs via Ink: Understanding How the Amount of Non-data Ink in a Graph Affects Perception and Learning

There is much debate in the design community concerning how to make an easy-to-understand graph. While expert designers recommend including as little non-data ink as possible, there is little empirical evidence to support their arguments. Non-data ink refers to any ink on a graph that is not required to display the graph's data. As a result of the lack of strong evidence concerning how to design graphs, there is widespread confusion when it comes to best practices. This paper describes a preliminary study of graph perception and learning using an eye-tracking system at UNC's School of Information and Library Science.

The influence of particle shape of coating pigments on their packing ability and on the flow properties of coating colours

The influence of particle shape of coating pigments on theirpacking ability and on the flow properties of coating colourshas been investigated. The particle shapes considered werespherical, flaky and acicular (needle-shaped). In the case ofsuspensions containing monodisperse spherical polystyreneparticles, a concentration gradient appeared in the filter cakeforming during filtration under static conditions. Such agradient, monitoredby non-destructive magnetic resonanceimaging (MRI), is not accounted for in the traditionalfiltration theory used in coating technology. Good agreementwas found between a literature model describing filtrationthrough a compressible filter cake and the concentrationgradients measured by MRI. According to this model, the scaledconcentration gradient was the same at all times. For flaky (mainly kaolin) and acicular (aragonite)particles, a rapid method was evaluated to estimate a shapefactor of the pigment particle. Generalised mathematical modelsof oblate and prolate spheroids were applied to reduce thethree geometrical dimensions of the particle to two, the majoraxis and the minor axis. The shape factor, which is mass-based,was derived from a comparison between the results obtained bytwo different size-assessment instruments, viz. the Sedigraphand an instrument using light scattering. This yields a shapefactor distribution as a function of equivalent sphericalparticle size, but the results are uncertain for small particlediameters, below 0.2 µm. Good agreement was obtainedbetween the shape factor and a mass-based aspect ratio obtainedby image analysis, but the rapid method is generally moreaccurate for flaky than for acicular particles. Results obtained by capillary viscometry showed that therewas a relationship between the viscosity at high shear rates(&gt;105s-1) and the shape factor, but that it was notsufficient to use the median value of the shape factor toachieve proper information. A more complete evaluation requiresknowledge of the shape factor distribution, which is also givenin part by the method mentioned above. However, a large medianshape factor was related to a high high-shear viscosity.Non-Newtonian entrance pressure losses were sometimessignificant in capillary viscometry, indicating that it wasinappropriate to measure the shear viscosity with only onecapillary. Such effects were however relatively much morepronounced in slit die viscometry, especially in the case ofacicular particles, where the aspect ratio was a crucialparameter. The influence of the shape factor of kaolinparticles on the non-Newtonian entrance pressure losses over aslit die was surprisingly small.
