Application of pinch technology in an integrated pulp and paper mill.

The objective of this investigation was to utilise water pinch analysis as a tool for the optimisation of fresh water use in an integrated pulp and paper mill. The investigation was carried out at Mondi Paper in Merebank, south of Durban. The pulp and paper manufacturing process is a large consumer of fresh water and minimising the amount of fresh water used in the processes is beneficial from both a cost and environmental point of view. There are examples of mills which have "closed" their water systems to the extent that fresh water make up is minimal and most of the water is recycled and reused in a closed loop. These examples provide guidance on the basis of proven methods for reducing water consumption in the pulp and paper industry and can be used as a reference for mills wishing to reduce water consumption by making use of tried and tested methods. This investigation sought to provide an alternative method to identifying potential savings in fresh water consumption by making use of water pinch analysis. This was done at Mondi Paper by analysing individual parts of the mill and then a larger section of the mill which included both pulp and paper production. Flow rates of water streams and fibre content in those streams were obtained from plant data, where available, and this data was used to produce.a mass balance using the Linnhoff-March software, Water Tracker. The balance produced using Water Tracker provided the missing flow and fibre content data and this data was used as the input for the Linnhoff-March software, Water Pinch , to perform the water pinch analysis. The results achieved when analysing the individual parts of the mill did not demonstrate potential for significant savings in fresh water consumption, however the analysis of the integrated section of the mill identified a potential reduction in fresh water. It was found that the application of a single contaminant analysis to the larger section of the mill identified a possible reduction in the freshwater requirement of 8.1% and a reduction in effluent generated of 5.4%. This is a savings of R1 548 593 per annum based on 2003 costs of fresh water and effluent disposal. This analysis was conducted using the most simplified representation possible to produce meaningful results in order to evaluate the effectiveness of water pinch analysis in optimising the fresh water consumption in an integrated pulp and paper mill. It is demonstrated that water pinch analysis is potentially a useful tool in determining the minimum fresh water requirement of a site. / Thesis (M.Sc.Eng.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2003.

Materials and new designs in sustainable community development : a case study of Phumani Paper's Eshowe and Endlovini projects

M.Tech. (Fine Art) / As a Fine Art graduate student, I worked at Phumani Paper Project's research unit based at the Technikon Witwatersrand from 2001 to 2004. The experience allowed me to render my services as a trainer for craft product design to help develop and sustain the poverty alleviation programme for Phumani Paper's papermaking projects around the country. Participants of the project benefit from the program in terms of training in the making of craft items, personal capacity building, and income generating opportunities. South Africa's history is fundamental to understanding the present social imbalance which the government, non-governmental organisations and private organisations are trying to address in various ways. My research work at the KwaZulu-Natal Papermaking and Packaging Project (KZN-PCPP) in Eshowe culminated in the writing of this dissertation. My research explored issues related to materials and design for the sustainability of the KZNPCPP. In regard to poverty alleviation I used Participatory Action Research (PAR), which was core to the activities and works presented in this dissertation. New designs for the packaging of craft products introduced during my intervention period helped improve the marketability of the products produced at KZNPCPP, and helped the participants to learn new skills. I focused on the introduction of sugar cane paper pulp in the making of ceramic wares. This added value to the potters' experience and to a certain extent helped reduce losses due to breakage during transportation.

Migration of chemicals through coated paperboard for food contact packaging

Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Technology: Chemistry in the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology / Paperboard made from recycled fibres is being used more frequently in direct food packaging applications, in addition to its use as secondary and tertiary packaging. However, recent research has shown that there is a risk that harmful chemicals may migrate from the paperboard into the food. The simplest approach to reducing the migration of these contaminants is the use of barrier films. The barrier efficiencies of these various films can be examined by means of a migration test into a food simulant, followed by extraction in a suitable solvent. The extract can then be analysed by chromatographic techniques such as gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to determine the concentration of the specific contaminants. However on a production level, the availability of this type of highly specialised equipment is limited. A simple, cost effective method is needed to evaluate the barrier properties to specific chemical contaminants. The Heptane Vapour Transmission Rate (HVTR) test is a permeation test method for use at quality control level to determine barrier properties to the migration of organic vapours. The first part of the study focussed on establishing a universal correlation between HVTR and specific migration of diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) that would be applicable to any type of functional barrier. However, experimental data demonstrated this was not possible as the correlation factor linking HVTR to specific migration was largely dependent on the type and morphology of the coating considered. The initial objective of the study was reconsidered in favour of building individual models specific to the nature of the coating and substrate considered. A correlation between HVTR and specific migration of DiBP, DBP and DEHP for a polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) barrier polymer was constructed by varying the applied coating weight. The vapour transport mechanism for the HVTR test and the specific migration test were found to differ, showing that a direct correlation between HVTR and the specific migration was again not possible. However, an indirect correlation could be made. The HVTR method gives an indication of film integrity, whereas the coating weight could be used as an indicator of the specific migration. The correlation between the coating weight and the specific migration yielded an equation that can be used to calculate the specific migration through the PVDC barrier polymer, provided the quantity of the chemical contaminant originally present in the paperboard was known. This equation was specific to the type of barrier polymer, the specific chemical contaminant as well as the intended shelf-life of the food product to be packaged in the paperboard.

Os novos processos de impressão têm exigido novas características do papel. Entre os novos processos encontram-se as impressões digitais, em especial, a impressão por jato de tinta. Este tipo de impressão é baseado na ejeção de uma gota de tinta por um orifício em uma cabeça de impressão, que atinge o substrato formando um pixel. A definição das imagens formadas neste tipo de impressão é, portanto, dependente das características da tinta e, principalmente, do substrato. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo caracterizar as propriedades do papel que são importantes para a impressão por jato de tinta, desde o momento em que a tinta atinge a superfície do papel até a sua absorção. As propriedades consideradas neste estudo foram: a rugosidade, a porosidade e as propriedades químicas da superfície. A rugosidade foi avaliada pelos métodos tradicionais da área de papel e celulose (baseados em vazão de ar), por método perfilométrico e, qualitativamente, por imagens obtidas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Para a porosidade foi utilizado um método tradicional, além de porosimetria de intrusão de mercúrio e microtomografia de raios X, e a composição química da superfície foi avaliada por espectroscopia por energia dispersiva (EDS) e espectroscopia Raman. A partir dos resultados obtidos, as propriedades do papel foram qualificadas e as suas influências no espalhamento e absorção de líquidos em geral foram identificadas. Além da caracterização das propriedades superficiais e porosimétricas do papel, as correlações entre as propriedades e os diferentes métodos utilizados na sua determinação foram discutidas. Os métodos de análise tradicional não conseguem caracterizar os papéis em níveis de resolução capazes de fornecer informações sobre a influência das propriedades estudadas na impressão por jato de tinta. Ao mesmo tempo, a caracterização do papel para este tipo de impressão e a compreensão das influências das propriedades do papel no espalhamento e absorção de tinta e líquidos em geral só é possível quando as propriedades são analisadas em conjunto. / The new printing processes have required new features of the paper. Among the new printing processes are the digital printing, in particular, the inkjet printing. This type of printing is based on the ejection of an ink drop through a hole in a print head, which reaches the substrate forming a pixel. The resolution of the images formed in this type of printing is therefore dependent on the characteristics of the ink, and especially of the substrate. The present work aims to characterize the properties of paper that are important to the inkjet printing, from the moment the ink hits the paper surface to its absorption. The properties considered in this study were: roughness, porosity and chemical properties of the surface. The roughness was evaluated by traditional methods in pulp and paper sector (based on air flow), by profilometry and qualitative using images obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). For the porosity, a traditional method was used, and also mercury intrusion porosimetry and X-ray microtomography. The chemical composition of the surface was evaluated by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and Raman spectroscopy. From the results obtained, the paper properties were described and their influence on the spreading and absorption of liquids in general have been identified. Besides the characterization of the paper surface properties and porosity, the correlations between the properties and the different methods used for measurement were discussed. The traditional analysis methods can not characterize the paper in levels of resolution capable of providing information about the influence of the properties studied in inkjet printing. At the same time, to characterize paper for this printing process and to understand the influences of the paper properties on the spreading and absorption of inks and liquids in general the paper properties have to be analyzed together.

Using Historical Bindings in Producing Contemporary Artists' Books

I regard the culturally rich bookbinding as formats that hold great meaning; I made models of books that existed in different cultures through the history of the book. I became interested in how each structure had unique features and how the books themselves transmitted knowledge about their form. This interest in bookbinding formats led me to explore ways to add content to The binding plays a powerful role in producing my artist's books, the look and presence of these bindings is an integral part of my work and they are linked to the content and aesthetics. The final pieces encourage the viewer to interact with the work.

Comparison of the Standard and Computerized Versions of the College Level Examination Program General Examination in English Composition

The purpose of this study was to test whether the computer-administered College Level Examination Program (CLEP) General Examination in English Composition produced scores equivalent to those obtained from the traditional paper-and-pencil version. The CLEP examination and its adaptation for computer administration and the results of a pilot study are presented. The subjects in this study were volunteers who took the CLEP English Composition Examination in order to earn college credit and were randomly assigned to either the computer-first or paper-and-pencil-first groups. Each subject took both forms of the examination with approximately one half of the subjects taking each version first. Analysis of variance failed to detect a significant effect for test form or an interaction of test form and order of administration. Equivalence reliability coefficients and internal consistency coefficients also indicated that the computer administration did not significantly alter the results of the examination. In general, the results of this study support the hypothesis that the computer-administered version of the CLEP General Examination in English Composition produces results equivalent to those obtained from the traditional paper-and-pencil version.

<p>A baggy paper web has parts that are longer than neighboring parts. One of the assumed reasons for bagginess is thickness variations of the paper. In the roll the thicker streaks then add up to form a ridge. In the ridges the paper is strained and during storage the strain may become permanent. When the paper unreeled it is then baggy. Runability problems because of baggy webs is a common problem in the paper industry. Baggy webs can result in corrugations appearing when the paper is passing through nips during converting processes. Ridges have been simulated in this project by reeling thin plastic film into selected parts in the roll. Plastic was reeled in near the core, in the middle of the roll and in the periphery of the roll. To see if the paper web had got length differences the web was divided into stripes and with a special device the length of each stripe was measured. Even other paper properties were tested to determine if the ridges had other influences on the paper. Two of this properties was thickness and grammage, which were determined to see if the paper had got higher density in the baggy parts. The measurements show that the plastic results in bagginess but also that after a couple of days, the paper more or less has recovered to the initial thickness and sometimes also to the initial length. The most bagginess appeared near the core and it resulted in relatively large length differences, but even here the paper has likely recovered to some extent.</p> / <p>Då en pappersrulle har partier där pappret är längre kallas det ibland för slappa stråk. Det finns flera orsaker till slappa stråk och en av dessa orsaker är att pappret har en ojämn tjockleksprofil. I dessa fall uppstår de slappa stråken eftersom den ojämna tjockleksprofilen gör att pappersrullen på de positioner där pappret är tjockare får en större diameter än i övrigt. Då papper rullas över dessa åsar eller valkar som har en större diameter töjs pappret ut och då det rullas av rullen är det slappt. Körbarhetsproblem till följd av att pappret är slappt i vissa partier är ett stort problem inom pappersindustrin. Dessa körbarhetsproblem kan t.ex. vara att det uppstår veck i pappret då det passerar valsnyp.</p><p>I detta projekt har slappa stråk skapats genom att en viss mängd plast rullats in i pappersrullar dels i botten, dels i mitten samt ett parti närmast rullens periferi. Banspänningsmätningar har utförts för att se hur slappt pappret blivit där plast rullats in. För att se om pappret fått bestående längdskillnader i de slappa stråken har tvärsbanor tagits ur rullen och varje tvärsbana delats upp i remsor för att mäta längden på. Även andra pappersegenskaper har testats i dessa partier för att se om de slappa stråken påverkar papprets egenskaper. Bland annat har tjockleksprofilen mätts upp för att se om pappret komprimerats och fått en bestående densitetsökning i de slappa stråken. Mätningar visar dels att pappret blir slappt i partier där plast rullats in, men också att pappret efter några dagar i stort sätt helt återgått till sin ursprungstjocklek och vissa fall även i längdled. Pappret var som slappast i botten av rullarna och där uppmättes relativt stora längdskillnader även om pappret troligtvis återhämtat sig till en stor del även där.</p>

Preparation of Electroconductive Paper by Deposition of Conducting Polymer

<p>The thesis describes an investigation into the interaction between the conducting polymer and cellulosic materials, and the preparation of electroconductive paper. The adsorption behavior of the conducting polymer onto cellulosic materials was characterized. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(4-styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) was used as conducting polymer because of its attractive properties in terms of conductivity, water solubility, and environmental stability. The model substrate used for adsorption was microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). Various pH levels and salt concentrations were explored to completely understand the adsorption behavior of PEDOT:PSS. The variation in surface charge characteristics when the pH and salt concentration were changed was monitored by polyelectrolyte titration and zeta potential measurement. The adsorption isotherm showed a broad molecular distribution of the conducting polymer and considerable interaction between the polymer and MCC. As the pH of the solution was increased, the adsorbed amount decreased. With varying salt concentrations, the adsorption passed through a maximum. The extent of deposition of PEDOT:PSS on the surface of cellulosic fibers was investigated using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) with a commercial base paper as substrate. XPS analysis of dip-coated paper samples showed PEDOT enrichment on the surface. The degree of washing the dip-coated paper with acidic water did not significantly affect the PEDOT enrichment on the surface.</p><p> </p><p>A base paper was coated with PEDOT:PSS blends to produce electroconductive papers. The bulk conductivities (σ<sub>dc</sub>) of the coated papers were measured using a four-probe technique and impedance spectroscopy. One-side and two-side coating gave comparable conductivity levels. Various organic solvents added to the PEDOT:PSS dispersion at different concentrations showed various effects on the bulk conductivity of the coated paper. Blends containing sorbitol and isopropanol did not enhance the bulk conductivity of the coated paper, and at high concentrations these organic solvents lowered the conductivity. Paper samples coated with a PEDOT:PSS blend containing N-methylpyrrolidinone (NMP) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) exhibited a higher conductivity than when coated with pure PEDOT:PSS, due to conformational changes and their plasticizing effect. The effect of calendering was investigated and only the sample subjected to 174 kN/m line load after coating showed significant conductivity enhancement. The addition of TiO<sub>2</sub> pigment lowered the bulk conductivity of the paper. Contact angle measurements were made to monitor the effect of coating the paper with PEDOT:PSS blends on the hydrophilicity of the paper samples. The amount of PEDOT:PSS deposited in the fiber network was determined using total sulfur analysis. Thus, this study makes use of conventional paper surface treatment as method for achieving bulk conductivity of paper in the semi-conductor range without significantly decreasing the paper strength.</p> / Printed Polymer Electronics
