The provision and effectiveness of guidance services in KwaZulu secondary schools : an exploratory study

A dissertation submitted to the FACULTY OF EDUCATION at the UNIVERSITY OF ZULULAND in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF EDUCATION in the Department of Educational Planning and Administration, 1994. / This study was born of the researcher's realization that pupils in KwaZulu secondary schools are apparently not being adequately exposed to guidance services. This the researcher outlined in Chapter 1. In Chapter 2 the researcher reviewed literature in order to formulate a conceptual framework on guidance and guidance services and in so doing formulate a background against which the study would proceed. In Chapter 3 the researcher conducted a comparative study of the provision and administration of guidance services in the KwaZulu Department of Education and Culture and the Natal Education Department. Differences in the provision and adminstration of guidance services were also highlighted. In Chapter 4 the researcher outlined the research conducted and the data-gathering instruments used as wel1 as the suitabi1ity of such instruments in the gathering of data. In Chapter 5 the researcher analysed and interpreted research data. A number of tables were used for this purpose. The data revealed inadequate provision for guidance services in KwaZulu. In Chapter 6 the researcher outlined his findings regarding the guidance services in KwaZulu. He also presented his recommendations regarding the setting up and improvement of guidance services in Kwa Zulu. SUMMARY OF FINDINGS 1. KwaZulu does not have enough guidance personnel. This is the case regarding head office, circuits and schools. The position in the schools is at its worst. Very few schools have ful1-time guidance teachers appointed by the Department of Education and Culture. 2. Facilities, equipment and materials for guidance are not adequately provided. 3. Principals of secondary schools have not on their initiative made enough provision for guidance services, e.g. appointing part-time guidance teachers from among the staff, organising careers days or involving agencies like the Career Information Centre and the Department of Manpower. 4. Research and evaluation as far as guidance services are concerned is lacking. SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIOHS 1. The appointment of enough guidance personnel is of primary importance, especially at the schools. 2. The KwaZulu Department of Education and Culture must take a more active and authoritative role in ensuring that guidance is at least being taught at the schools. Schools must be made accountable for this. 3. The same department must improve communication with the schools, listen to their problems and react to such problems , needs and requirements. 4. Research and evaluation must be introduced in order to continually evaluate the effectiveness of guidance services in KwaZulu. This will also identify the how and where of improvements.

The problem of this study is to develop a functional plan for organizing, initiating, and administering a sound guidance program in the Electra, Texas, High School. Major emphasis has been placed upon a multidimensional guidance service in order that the optimum measure of guidance can be provided for all pupils in accordance with their needs. In order to plan a guidance program adapted to the needs of the particularly designated group of boys and girls, it was deemed necessary to discover their needs as much as possible, in a short period of time, by testing student opinion and knowledge. Another specific problem of the study is to survey the opinions of authorities in the field of guidance and personnel so as to determine what they think constitutes a sound guidance program in a secondary school. Thus, the problem of the writer resolves itself into a threefold undertaking, as follows: 1. To determine the guidance needs of the pupils of Electra High School. 2. To establish a set of criteria of soundness for a guidance program in a secondary school. The criteria are to be based upon the opinions of several authorities in the field of guidance. 3. To set up a proposed guidance program for Electra High School.

Libraries can play a much important role in imparting career guidance. In formal education, library is described as ‘heart of education’. The library system in higher education is committed to provide independent learning environment to student. From the book houses the libraries have gone to an individual residence to share the shelves of knowledge. Therefore, it can be inferred that the success of career guidance in educational institutions depends upon the efficient library system. Therefore the system of education has to take care of strengthening the library system and thus disseminate career information. Librarians with their abilities in knowledge organization and dissemination skills can play a profound and enduring role in encouraging and assisting young people to follow their hearts and to pursue their dreams. In developing countries like India college librarians can play a major role in the career development of the youth who comes to the library for guidance and support in their study and to prepare for their future career opportunities.

Dev.) -- University of Limpopo, 2016 / The aim of this study is to assess the impact of career guidance for career choice in the secondary schools of Sepitsi Circuit in Lebowakgomo District, Limpopo Province. The total number of secondary schools in the Circuit is twelve (12), with 20 Life Orientation Educators (LOEs) and 275 Grade 12 Learners (GR12Ls). All schools are public schools having the same features of rural and previously disadvantaged communities’ context. The study was conducted during examination time and therefore co-operation both in the part of learners and educators was not at the maximum as expected. The research is evaluative in nature as the researcher sought to assess the effectiveness of Career Choice (CC) as influenced by the implementation of Career Guidance (CG). The primary data were collected by means of two categories of questionnaires for mostly close-ended questions and open-ended questions for Grade 12 Learner (GR12L) respondents and Life Orientation Educator (LOE) participants respectively. The findings show that CG is not given the necessary attention at secondary schools as GR12Ls and LOEs struggle to understand obvious CG concepts. This research project focuses on the value of such a study both to explain how Career Guidance need to be taken as the mother of all subjects in schools as it is the nucleus in the realization of the main aim of every country’s education system, participating fully in the world of work for socio-economic growth. The study’s recommendations concluded that Career Guidance, which is part of Life Orientation (LO), should be given the status of a full subject in our schools.

Development and Validation of a Two Factor Model of Adult Career Orientation

Subjects in this study were 5,523 respondents from a survey which was sent to households throughout the United States. The purpose of this study was to examine two basic components of career orientation: career indecision and career insight. Correlational analyses found relationships between career indecision and average job tenure, industry leaving intentions, industry staying intentions, and job satisfaction. Correlational analyses found relationships between career insight, industry staying intentions and job satisfaction. Multiple regression analyses were run using both career indecision and career insight as independent variables found that they had useful levels of incremental validity in predicting industry leaving intentions and job satisfaction. Potential uses of the two-dimensional career indecision - career insight model are discussed.

Submitted in part fulfillment of the requirements for PhD (Community Psychology) in the Department of Psychology in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2009. / Learners need effective school-based Guidance and Counselling Services to assist them with their developmental and situational needs. The main aim of the study was to evaluate the extent to which Guidance-Counselling Program is implemented in secondary schools in line with South African Education White Paper 6 of 2001 and ACSA Performance Standards. The study further intended to capacitate educators and Guidance counsellors with knowledge and skills on how to develop and maintain effective Comprehensive and Integrated Guidance-Counselling Services in their institutions. A sample of 153 educators and 130 learners was selected from secondary schools in Gauteng and Mpumalanga provinces. Secondary schools that received (orientation) training on SA Education White Paper 6 from the researcher were compared with those who did not receive such training. Data was collected through a questionnaire consisting of structured and semi-structured questions. Responses from focus groups were content analyzed into themes and descriptive techniques were utilized. The Objective/Close-ended questions were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) (Version 17). x2 Tests were computed for categorical data and to analyze any differences, in relation to level implementation of Guidance-Counselling Program. The main finding of the study was that, secondary schools differ significantly on how they implement Life Orientation, Guidance and Counselling activities. Furthermore, there is a perfect relationship among secondary school learners and educators on how they perceive the Guidance-Counselling Services within their respective institutions. The need for Comprehensive and Integrated Guidance-Counselling Program Model, clear guidelines and performance standards cannot therefore be overlooked. If this program is effectively implemented, it may contribute substantially towards excellent academic results, improved psychological well-being, and production of matured and responsible future citizens.

The two major employers are the government and commercial enterprises of the private sector. Owing to restrictive fiscal policies, government has little leeway to create major employment opportunities. Greater emphasis is being placed on the commercial sector to fulfil this need. Vocational guidance counsellors ought to help a child acquire work-related knowledge in the classroom, thus saving them time, and sometimes the pain, of learning the hard way. By directing this research specifically at vocational guidance, much could be done by the guidance counsellor to help children towards embarking on a career in commerce. The aims of this study are: * To pursue a study of relevant literature on school guidance counselling. * To undertake an empirical investigation into the school guidance counsellor's role pertaining to a career in commerce. * To provide certain guidelines and recommendations regarding the school guidance counsellor's role with regards to a career in commerce. Research with regard to this study was conducted as follows: * A literature study of available, relevant literature. * An empirical study comprising structured questionnaires completed by guidance teachers of secondary schools. A Likert type scale questionnaire with three response categories; viz. Agree, Disagree and Uncertain, was constructed. The three response categories ensured that the respondents' selections fell into one of the categories enabling the measurement of the direction and intensity of their perceptions of the school vocational guidance counsellor's role pertaining to a career in commerce. Fifty -one respondents, representing guidance teachers and guidance counsellors were randomly selected from 14 secondary schools in Southern KwaZulu-Natal. With the aim of administering questionnaires in schools, it was necessary to first obtain permission from the Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal. Only after such permission was granted, was the researcher able to conduct this study. The primary data was in the form of a response to one of the three response categories (Agree, Disagree, Uncertain). Scores of the responses to each of the three categories were calculated. The descriptive technique was employed for the quantitative analysis of the data. This investigation has the following value: * It will provide an image of school vocational guidance counsellors' perceptions of their role pertaining to a career in commerce. * Certain guidelines can be formulated to encourage the support of the school vocational guidance counsellor's task. Anticipated dissemination of the research findings: * The research findings will culminate in articles (of accredited journals) and will be submitted to the relevant Education Department for possible implementation. * Findings from the research can be useful in planning of suitable methods (workshops, videos, etc.) to assist school vocational guidance counsellors and teachers of school guidance to meet the future vocational needs of their pupils. The topic lends itself to further research by interested stakeholders.
