Innovation in post production stage of print NewspaperFayo, Sicelo Nathaniel January 2010 (has links)
Print newspapers in South Africa are the oldest formal mode of news and information dissemination but which has come under tremendous pressure with the advent and spread of technological innovation involving information communication infrastructure and processes, but specifically the internet. The main challenge facing print newspapers in terms of circulation growth of print and advertising revenue is speed to market. The internet has not only provided a new avenue for news and information dissemination but has the distinct advantage of tremendous speed to deliver news and information to readers. Meanwhile, print newspapers whose production is still almost entirely dependent on traditional structures, processes and physical mode of delivery are battling to stay afloat as the chase for readers' attention is gaining more ground on digital platforms. This new competition landscape has now cast focus fully on traditional print media‟s production processes competency levels as well as their suitability for the nature of competition posed by digital news platforms. The processes involved in the production of a print newspaper can be described as hybrid (Davis and Heineke. 2005: 220) in that they involve different types of processes at different stages to produce the final product. The focus of this study at Avusa Media (Port Elizabeth) was on the post production processes involving the printing and distribution of printed newspapers with the objective of gaining an understanding of the extent and impact of the information technology advancement in the post production phase of printed newspapers. v In pursuing the goal, the case study research followed a phenomenological paradigm involving exploratory and descriptive research processes as described by Yin (1994) in Collis and Hussey (2003: 69) and Clifford Geertz (1973) in Babbie and Mouton (2005: 272) The research found that the traditional business structure for printed newspapers is increasingly becoming unviable due to poverty of technological innovation in critical parts of the production value chain; namely post production processes that encompass printing and distribution of printed newspapers. The research established and revealed that while there are some technological innovations and advances in the print newspaper publishing industry value chain worldwide, they are not only severely limited and disjointed but are also seemingly moving apart rather than towards consolidation in terms of the speed to market need faced by print newspaper publishers.

Born In a Crowd: Subjecthood Across Authorial Modes In the Nineteenth-Century Writer's MarketFriedlander, Keith January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation examines representations of authorship and subjecthood in the Romantic period as products of market position and publishing mode. In doing so, it views the traditional concept of Romantic individualism commonly associated with the solitary poet as a strategy developed to help the author navigate a complex writer’s market. Rather than focusing upon individualism as the defining authorial model for this period, however, my project presents it as one example of a diverse range of representational strategies employed by different authors operating from different positions within the market. To this end, this study compares the authorial model of the independent poet with authors engaged in a variety of other modes of publishing, including hack essayists, serialized poets, periodical editors, and celebrity authors.
By examining authors operating across different publishing modes, I demonstrate that each one’s concept of public identity is shaped principally by his or her particular market position, as defined by working relationships with peers, involvement in the particulars of publishing, exchanges with the critical press, and engagement with readers. These authors include William Wordsworth, Lord Byron, Letitia Elizabeth Landon, Charles Lamb, and Francis Jeffrey. By juxtaposing their different models of authorship, this study seeks to bridge the longstanding discourse regarding the social isolation of the Romantic poet with more contemporary streams of scholarship into the material realities of the nineteenth-century publishing industry. Drawing upon the social philosophy of the Frankfurt School and Eric Gans’ theory of Generative Anthropology, I examine how different strategies of representation were developed to preserve personal meaning and sustain public attention. By comparing responses to the rise of the writer’s market and the ubiquity of print culture, this dissertation argues that Romantic period authors demonstrate a distinctly modern understanding of public identity as a product of mediation in mass media culture.

Fifty-two academic and sixty-two public librarians responded. The responses were sorted into groups based on the type of library and whether or not the respondent followed the stated Q-sort distribution.

The publishing business in the Edo period (1603 – 1868) was very unique since it was divided into two genres: shomotsu mononohon and jihon kusazōshi. Publishers had their specialties and their business strategies varied. In this research paper, I examine the publishing strategies from the view of the network system. First, I state the definition of this network. Next, I study the publishing history of the Edo period to gain a general understanding. Lastly, I examine the network systems of the shomotsu publishers and the jihon kusazōshi publishers. I use examples from Tsutaya Jūzaburō, Suharaya Mohē, Tsuruya Kiemon, the Torii School and the Utagawa School. In the end, the readers will understand the various networks had the roles to energize the Edo community, and each network was indispensable among the whole big network system.

Privacy in Complex Sample Based SurveysShawn A Merrill (11806802) 20 December 2021 (has links)
In the last few decades, there has been a dramatic uptick in the issues related to protecting user privacy in released data, both in statistical databases and anonymized records. Privacy-preserving data publishing is a field established to handle these releases while avoiding the problems that plagued many earlier attempts. This issue is of particular importance for governmental data, where both the release and the privacy requirements are frequently governed by legislature (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA, Clery Act). This problem is doubly compounded by the complex survey methods employed to counter problems in data collection. The preeminent definition for privacy is that of differential privacy, which protects users by limiting the impact that any individual can have on the result of any query. <br><br>The thesis proposes models for differentially private versions of current survey methodologies and, discusses the evaluation of those models. We focus on the issues of missing data and weighting which are common techniques employed in complex surveys to counter problems with sampling and response rates. First we propose a model for answering queries on datasets with missing data while maintaining differential privacy. Our model uses k-Nearest Neighbor imputation to replicate donor values while protecting the privacy of the donor. Our model provides significantly better bias reduction in realistic experiments using existing data, as well as providing less noise than a naive solution. Our second model proposes a method of performing Iterative Proportional Fitting (IPF) in a differentially private manner, a common technique used to ensure that survey records are weighted consistently with known values. We also focus on the general philosophical need to incorporate privacy when creating new survey methodologies, rather than assuming that privacy can simply be added at a later step.
