Supporting conceptual queries over integrated sources of program information

A software developer explores a software system by asking and answering a series of questions. To answer these questions, a developer may need to consult various sources providing information about the program, such as the static relationships expressed directly in the source code, the run-time behaviour of a program recorded in a dynamic trace, or evolution history as recorded in a source management system. Despite the support afforded by software exploration tools, developers often struggle to find the necessary information to answer their questions and may even become disoriented, where they feel mentally lost and are uncertain of what they were trying to accomplish. This dissertation advances a thesis that a developer's questions, which we refer to as conceptual queries, can be better supported through a model to represent and compose different sources of information about a program. The basis of this model is the sphere, which serves as a simple abstraction of a source of information about a program. Many of the software exploration tools used by a developer can be represented as a sphere. Spheres can be composed in a principled fashion such that information from a sphere may replace or supplement information from a different sphere. Using our sphere model, for example, a developer can use dynamic runtime information from an execution trace to replace information from the static source code to see what actually occurred. We have implemented this model in a configurable tool, called Ferret. We have used the facilities provided by the model to implement 36 conceptual queries identified from the literature, blogs, and our own experience, and to support the integration of four different sources of program information. Establishing correspondences between similar elements from different spheres allows a query to bridge across different spheres in addition to allowing a tool's user interface to drive queries from other sources of information. Through this effort we show that sphere model broadens the set of possible conceptual queries answerable by software exploration tools. Through a small diary study and a controlled experiment, both involving professional software developers, we found the developers used the conceptual queries that were available to them and reported finding Ferret useful. / Science, Faculty of / Computer Science, Department of / Graduate

The goal of this work is to analyze systems Maven and Gradle and to compare one against the other. Whilst I was analyzing both the systems user guides in Czech language were created. To achieve the set of goals of the thesis I had to use user guides and books that were written in English as a source of information. The user guides describes the system basics, dependency management, testing and multi-project builds. Comparisons between the two systems were created from information from the user guides and personal experi-ence of the author. The practical part of the thesis contains files for build application in Maven and Gradle.

The Influence of Intentional and Situational factors on Enterprise Modelling Tool Acquisition in Organisations

Enterprise Modelling (EM) tools are an important part ofevery EM application project. Continuous evolution of modellingmethods therefore requires efficient EM tool support. Extensiveefforts have been devoted to developing new EM tools andmodelling techniques. Considerably less attention has been paidto the aspects of acquiring and introducing EM tools inorganisations. Our grounded theory study shows that thisprocess is far from simple. It is determined by theorganisation's intentions regarding EM and by the situation inthe EM user organisation. As a contribution to this, we presentan EM tool acquisition process, which focuses on selecting anappropriate EM tool acquisition scenario for an organisation.This process has the following stages - assessing theorganisation, choosing an EM tool acquisition strategy, andfollowing the EM tool acquisition strategy. We support theprocess of evaluating the situation at hand by providingguidelines for assessing intentional and situational factorsthat influence the use of EM tools. We also outline EM itself, along with its applicationprocess, and describe possible sources for gathering therequirements for an EM tool-set. Major requirements categoriesare discussed and analysed with respect to the goals andproblems regarding EM tools. Each category of requirements canbe satisfied to a certain degree, depending on theorganisational needs and various situational factors. This grounded theory study provides two main contributions.Firstly, it proposes a systematic approach for EM toolacquisition supported by a set of guidelines.The approachenables an organisation to assess its needs of EM tools and itsown appropriateness for EM tool usage. As a result, an EM userorganisation is able to choose an EM tool acquisition strategythat meets the situation it faces. This is a contribution tothe overall success of practical use of EM methods and tools.Secondly, it provides an important baseline for future researchand theory building within the area of EM tool adoption andapplication. Essential part of the thesis are technical calculations and simulations.

Rising demand for high productivity of machine tools leads to increase of the dynamics of the machine tool. With higher dynamics of the components is produced a free tool vibr ation that can affect the path accuracy of the feed axis and of the tool. In this thesis are examined various parameters of the feed axis, so that the influence of each parameter could be determined. To determine these factors is in this thesis created a structuralmechanical model of the feed axis by means of the finite element method and this thesis presents a connection of the FE model with a control loop of an axis that allows the theoretical study of the influences on the accuracy of the feed axis. The results show succes sful coupling of the FE model with the control loop. Selected parameters are analyzed in this paper.

Game-based learning and library instruction

The purpose of this study was to investigate to what extent a game can be used as an instructional tool for library instruction. In order to determine the effectiveness of the game for library instruction, it was necessary to do literature research that included both subject fields. The research design therefore includes a literature study on information literacy and a literature study on game-based learning. The game was based on the Big6 information literacy model (Eisenberg, 2008). An in-depth literature review on game-based learning was needed to determine which criteria would be necessary to create a game for instructional purposes. An instructional design process (DODDEL model) was used for the design of the game. The design and layout of the game illustrated the application of the game-based learning criteria. A single-case study method was used for the purpose of the study. A mixed-methods approach with qualitative and quantitative questions and formative and summative evaluation was used to collect data and evaluate the game. The data analysis was done in Chapter 6. The data analysis indicates that games can be used in an effective way for library instruction purposes. The comments seem to confirm the findings of the literature review on game-based learning. The rating scale proved that the players were engaged during game play. The findings of the study were discussed in the concluding chapter. Game-based learning criteria and their application were described. The success and restrictions of the study were indicated and discussed.
