Lifting Analysis of Precast Prestressed Concrete Beams

Cojocaru, Razvan 31 May 2012 (has links)
Motivated by Robert Mast's original papers on lifting stability, this research study provides a method for predicting beam behavior during lifting, with application in the construction of bridges. A beam lifting cracking limit state is developed based on analytical equations for calculating the roll angle of the beam, the internal forces and moments, the weak-axis and strong-axis deflections, and the cross-sectional angle of twist. Finite element simulations are performed to investigate the behavior of concrete beams during lifting and to validate the proposed method. Additionally, a statistical characterization of beam imperfections is presented, based on recently conducted field measurements of beam lateral sweep and eccentricity of lift supports. Finally, numerical examples for two typical precast prestressed concrete beam cross-sections are included to demonstrate the proposed method. / Master of Science

Johnny Golightly comes home

Hopkins, Patrick Mark 26 February 2009 (has links)
Abstract Johnny Golightly Comes Home is a nonfiction novel about the writing of two books by Pat Hopkins. In particular it is an account of the author’s often troubled interaction with artist John Anthony Boerma, who once took on the persona of Johnny Golightly after reading Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It is a story about illusion and fantasy in the creation of a work of conceptual art. As the lies are stripped away, so a new character emerges – that of Johnny Gochristly, the messiah sent to take away the parameters of the world. And in this latter-day passion play the unwitting writer has the role of Judas. The accompanying reflexive essay reviews the themes as they appear in the book – especially those of epiphany brought on by trauma, which leads to a divine mission often associated with extreme eccentricity. It concludes with a section on the writing process.

Correlation between Corneal Radius of Curvature and Corneal Eccentricity

Fredin, Patrik January 2013 (has links)
Aim: The primary aim of this study was to find if there is any correlation between the corneal radius of curvature and its eccentricity. Method: 45 subjects participated in this study, 24 emmetropes, 18 myopes and three hyperopes. All subjects were free of ocular abnormalities and had no media opacities. All the subjects had normal ocular health and good visual acuity of 1.0 or better for both distance and near. The values for eccentricity and corneal radius of curvature were obtained by using a Topcon CA-100F Corneal Analyzer. Results: For the 4.5 mm zone the only significant correlation between corneal radius of curvature and eccentricity was obtained for the mean of the meridian (p = 0.007). On the other hand, we found no significant correlation for the average of two meridians or for meridian 1 and meridian 2 separately in the 8.0 mm zone. Conclusions: We found no correlation between the corneal radius of curvature and the eccentricity for both zones. In addition, no correlation could be found between the spherical equivalent of the refractive errors and the corneal eccentricity. The reason for not finding any significant correlation between the two entities could be due to factors such as smaller sample size and poor distribution of refractive errors in the sample. Moreover, there may be other factors that could influence the overall corneal shape like eye shape, axial length and corneal diameter, which was not evaluated in this study.

XS Elementary: A Space for Eccentricity

Neal, Riley 16 September 2013 (has links)
Sited prominently in midtown Houston, XS Elementary explores eccentricity as a new spatial and graphic model for the public elementary school in order to reconfigure the structure of the learning and urban environment, establishing flexibility through architectural specificity and formal affect. The project draws from the legacy of mat buildings, employing a dense unit-based framework that is both rationally systematic and embedded with pockets of productively discontinuous eccentric spaces. These auxiliary learning spaces expand education beyond the generic classroom and into an interconnected spatial sequence. Graphic and spatial techniques of jitter, shift, and overprinting reveal, generate, and reinforce moments of internal eccentricity, embuing an internal urbanity to the school and allowing the city to penetrate the institution. By engaging longstanding disciplinary efforts to design learning environments suitable to our time, this thesis confronts today’s electronic delivery methods and emphasis on efficient standardization, asserting that spatial, graphic, and urban play (the slightly off, odd, and peculiar in the face of standardization) is the avenue through which Architecture can exercise innovative and dynamic design, moving beyond the banal mediocrity of design for specialized efficiency’s sake.

Diagnosis and Isolation of Air Gap Eccentricities in Closed-loop Controlled Doubly-Fed Induction Generators

Meenakshi Sundaram, Vivek 2011 May 1900 (has links)
With the widespread use of doubly-fed induction generators (DFIG) in wind energy conversion systems, condition monitoring is being given importance. Non-intrusive techniques like motor current signature analysis (MCSA), which involves looking for specific frequency components in the current spectrum, are preferred over analysis of magnetic field, temperature, vibrations or acoustic noise which require additional sensors. The major difficulty in MCSA is isolation of the fault, as multiple faults produce similar signatures. Moreover, closed-loop control makes diagnostics more complicated due to inherent compensation by the controller. This thesis presents a method to diagnose static and dynamic air gap eccentricities in doubly-fed induction generators operated for closed-loop stator power control by using a modified control technique to enable detection and isolation of this fault from electrical unbalances in the stator and rotor and load torque oscillations that produce similar effects. The effectiveness of the proposed control is verified using simulations and preliminary experiments performed on a healthy machine.

In this paper we addressed the issue of diagnostic research due to dynamic eccentricity related faults in Induction Machines. We modeled and analyzed the function of a three-phase quadrupole induction motor with a cage rotor with 36 stator slots and 28 rotor slots, both in healthy condition and under fault conditions. More specifically, using the finite element method in two dimensions through the "Opera" software, we simulated our motor operation under our two different error rates for 20% and 40% and subsequently we used the "Motor Current Signature Analysis - MCSA" diagnostic method for the diagnosis of this error under different load levels.

Leclercq, Colin 16 December 2013 (has links)
This work is concerned with the combined effects of eccentricity and pressure-driven axial flow on the linear stability properties of circular Couette flow with a fixed outer cylinder. An example of this flow can be found in oil-well drilling operations. A pseudospectral method is implemented to compute the basic flow, steady and homogeneous in the axial direction, as well as the normal modes of instability. There are four non-dimensional parameters: the radius ratio _ and the eccentricity e for the geometry, the azimuthal and axial Reynolds numbers, Re and Rez, for the dynamics. The first part of the study is devoted to the temporal stability properties. It is found that eccentricity pushes the convective instability threshold towards higher values of Re. The effect of axial advection on the threshold also tends to be stabilising. Eccentricity deforms the modes structure compared to the concentric case. As a result, the mode with the largest temporal growth rate takes the form of ‘pseudo-toroidal’ Taylor vortices in the absence of axial flow, and ‘pseudo-helical’ structures with increasing azimuthal order as Rez becomes larger. Results are qualitatively similar for different radius ratios. Agreement with the few available experimental data is good. In a second part, absolute instability is studied by applying the pinch-point criterion to the dispersion relation. Axial flow is found to strongly inhibit absolute instability, the mechanism of which being centrifugal, and the value of Re at the threshold is typically one order of magnitude larger than that of Rez. The effect of eccentricity is more complex: weak stabilisation for low values of e, marked destabilisation for moderate eccentricities and high enough Rez, and finally stabilisation as e is further increased. Unlike temporal instability, the dominant absolutely unstable mode is the ‘pseudo-toroidal’ Taylor vortex flow over the whole range of parameter space considered.

Konstrukce soustružnického sklíčidla se strojově nastavitelnou excentricitou / Design of lathe chuck with machine-adjustable excentricity

Petrych, Jan January 2019 (has links)
This master´s thesis focuses on constructional design of chuck with settable eccentricity in two axes. The first part consists of brief analysis of the clamping of CNC machines and summary of available chucks with settable eccentricity. Next part deals with study of possible construction designs. Two construction variants will be based on those designs in the next part. Following part then describes dimensionality of the main parts of the chuck. Based on the calculations, the 3D model of chosen variant is created with the description of its functionality. Finally the conditions of operation for the chuck are described.
