Using Eddy Current Testing Method to Evaluate the Depth of the Defects in the Heat Exchanger TubesJong, Ming-hsiung 29 August 2006 (has links)
For the evaluation of non-ferrous heat exchanger tube, there are many non-destructive testing methods; however, the eddy current testing (ECT) method is the most popular one. By using of ECT, you may find out the defects existing inside or outside the tube wall, diagnose the heat exchanger system and find out the latent problems. The problem is that an improper signal analysis will result in error in the range of 15〜25% of the tube wall thickness, or even over 40% error. This is a great discouragement to the ECT inspectors, and will reduce the confidence of the proprietors of power plants or petro-chemical industries to the use of ECT. Therefore, in this thesis, the study is mainly focus on the problems of the aluminum brass tubes in condenser using ECT method. This thesis will analyze the causes of error of aluminum brass tubes when using ECT, prepare calibration and reference tubes, and test them using eddy current instruments. The relationship among the raw data with volts, phase angle and depth has been found. Two data evaluation methods are developed, one is the defect depth modification equation and the other is the auxiliary evaluation curve. The new methods are proved to be more accurate and practical in the evaluation of heat exchanger tube after more than one year of verification by field testing in the power plant. The results obtained in this thesis are very helpful to reduce the probability of tube failure.

The Finite Element Analysis of Evaluation Curves and Errors in the Eddy Current Testing.Lin, Jian-Hong 21 June 2005 (has links)
Eddy current testing is a non-destructive testing method that has usually used for examination of carbon steel tubes. By using a high frequency electromagnetic field on the exciting probe, it is easy to figure out the impedance variation of the coil on impedance plane, and estimate the crack depth by measuring the angle of curve. However, different kind of tubes and electromagnetic properties resulted in different testing.
The purpose of this study is to create the two dimensional axial symmetry model of eddy current testing by finite element software package FEMLAB. And it is easy to estimate the crack depth by figuring the impedance plane and evaluation curves by MATLAB. Furthermore, the research analyzed the variation of curves and angles on an impedance plane and tried to reduce testing errors.
Over all, the analysis of some influence factors of eddy current testing in the present study not only provides a standard of estimating crack depth more accurately, but also reduces the evaluation errors.

Effects of Dimensions of Coil on Eddy Current Testing in Finite Element AnalysisHsiao, Pi-cheng 12 August 2009 (has links)
ABSTRACT
Eddy Current Test (ET) is one of the widely-used method in the nondestructive testing (NDT). It is used to examine thinner sheet metal. According to the theory of electromagnetic induction, the researcher used a coil to make the surface of the metal pipe bring much eddy current. In addition, he investigated the variations of the coil impendence by the interaction between the coil magnetic field and the eddy current magnetic field. By observing the variations of the phase angle and the impendence plane diagram, the researcher also found factors for different defects.
The purpose of this study is to research the influence of the diversity of the geometry when examining metal pipe. According to Eddy Current Test, the magnetic field is a major factor in testing. So the researcher generalized a 3-D electromagnetic model with software and analyzed the results of the magnetic field by the finite element method. By drawing the impendence plane diagram, evaluating curves and by observing the variations of the influence by diversity of the geometry, the researcher found the possibility of preventing the inaccuracy and errors in testing with a 3-D electromagnetic model. Later on, he found some influential factors, confirmed the tendency, and then increased the accuracy in examining thin sheet metal.

The nuclear power plant steam generator tubes are subjected to different levels of stress and loading at high temperatures, reducing its lifetime due to the development of defects and corrosion. The Eddy Current Testing (ECT) is a nondestructive testing used to diagnose defects of corrosion and discontinuities in the inner and outer surface of heat exchanger tubes. These tubes are subject to failure by different mechanisms of chemical and mechanical degradation such as fatigue and stress corrosion crack. The ECT signals are affected by different noises making the analysis a difficult task to the inspector. This dissertation presents the results of the main characteristics from the ECT signals using the Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) as an alternative method for the processing and signal analysis. The Hilbert-Huang Transform has its name given by the American National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA, as the result of Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and the Hilbert Spectral Analysis (HSA) methods. The Eddy Current signals are transient, nonstationary and nonlinear. The Hilbert-Huang Transform applied in this work provided two alternative proceedings in signal processing, one in signal pre-processing acting as noise filter (De-noising) and another as signal analysis, which identifies the characteristics of signal time-frequency-energy.

Induktiv provning av ferritiskt rostfritt stå / Eddy current testing on ferritic stainless steelWestin, Tommy January 2011 (has links)
The report examines the factors which may be a contributing cause to the problems that are present when ferritic stainless steel are eddy current tested in a warm condition. The work is carried out at Fagersta Stainless AB in Fagersta which manufactures stainless steel wire. In the rolling mill there is an eddy current equipment for detection of surface defects on the wire. The ferritic stainless steels cause a noise when testing and this noise complicates the detection of defects.Because of this, a study was made of how the noise related to factors such as steel grade, temperature, size and velocity. By observing the signal and with the possibilities to change the equipment settings the capability to let a signal filter reduce the noise level were evaluated. Theories about the material's physical properties have also been included, mainly the magnetic properties, electrical conductivity and the material's tendency to oxidize. Results from the tests show that a number of factors do not affect the inductive test significantly and to use a filter to reduce the noise level does not seem to be a viable option. The level of noise does not relate to the presence of superficial particles in form of oxides. The ferritic stainless steels showed some difference in noise level. Which noise level there was did match well with the steels probability for a precipitation of a second phase, and precipitation of austenite may in this case contribute to noise when using an eddy current instrument. The noise is probably due to some physical material property that varies within the thread.
