Apesar de suas contribuições ao desenvolvimento da psicologia experimental nos EUA, suas ideias foram gradativamente abandonadas após sua morte e seu sistema tornou-se vítima de interpretações parciais, que ignoram aspectos importantes de sua trajetória intelectual. Duas questões centrais sobressaem neste cenário: a relação entre as concepções de Titchener e o empiriocriticismo, e as mudanças em seu projeto psicológico. Partindo da hipótese de que a psicologia de Titchener refletiu as transformações em sua perspectiva filosófica, o presente estudo procurou oferecer, com base em fontes primárias inéditas, uma interpretação abrangente do percurso intelectual do autor, elucidando aspectos até aqui não esclarecidos e que permanecem mal compreendidos na literatura secundária. Para tanto, o trabalho foi dividido em 4 capítulos. Após apresentação do problema e dos procedimentos adotados na pesquisa, que ocupam a introdução, o capítulo 1 trata do contexto formativo de Titchener em Oxford e em Leipzig, com especial atenção para o cenário institucional e intelectual britânico, que exerceu significativa influência sobre o autor. O capítulo 2 apresenta as características da concepção inicial de psicologia de Titchener, identificando a influência de suas convicções originais sobre questões centrais de sua proposta. O capítulo 3 discute a consolidação de seu projeto de psicologia, apresentando o reposicionamento de Titchener em relação à filosofia e seus novos pressupostos. O capítulo 4 trata do desenvolvimento tardio de sua obra e das reinterpretações apresentadas pelo autor em seu projeto. Na conclusão, é retomada a trajetória do projeto de psicologia de Titchener face às questões centrais do estudo e algumas considerações gerais sobre a natureza do seu trabalho são apresentadas. / Developed between the end of the 19th century and the two first decades of the 20th century, Titchener’s psychological project is still misinterpreted. Despite his contributions to the development of experimental psychology in the USA, his ideas were gradually abandoned after his death, and his system began to be interpreted in a fragmentary way, ignoring crucial aspects of his intellectual trajectory. Two central questions are of utmost importance: the relation between Titchener’s ideas and empiriocriticism, and the changes introduced by Titchener in his psychological project throughout his career. Assuming that his psychology reflects transformations in his philosophical perspective, the central goal of this work is to offer, based on new primary sources, a comprehensive interpretation of Titchener’s intellectual trajectory, elucidating aspects that have been hitherto only partially approached and remain poorly understood in the secondary literature. After the presentation of the research problem and methodological procedures in the introduction, chapter 1 displays the institutional and intellectual context of Titchener’s education in Oxford and Leipzig. Chapter 2 discusses Titchener’s first psychological project and the impact of his first assumptions. Chapter 3 presents the consolidation of his psychological project, showing Titchener’s change of mind in relation to philosophy and his new theoretical assumptions. Chapter 4 deals with the late development of his work as well as his reinterpretations. The conclusion resumes Titchener’s intellectual path and finishes with some general considerations regarding the nature of his work.
