ECONOMICAL VALUATION OF ARCHITECTURAL DECISIONS WITHIN AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRONICS

<p>Today most innovations made within the automotive domain are driven by electronics. The automotive customers demand new functionality with every new product release and the time-to-market is constantly shortened. Automotive embedded systems are often resource constrained and trade-offs between the system behavior and the resources required is of great importance. The cost sensitive automotive industry has to optimize the use of the system's limited resources, but in the meantime also be flexible. The system needs to support a large number of vehicle configurations over many years of production. The design decisions are usually based on many factors that pull in different directions such as maintenance, portability, usability etc. The growing complexity of the product and the many uncertain factors create a need for support in the design process. To better understand this problem decision methods used within an R&D department of an international vehicle manufacturer has been investigated through interviews and surveys. The survey reveals that a majority of the respondents use unstructured methods for resolving decision issues. When respondents were asked about their preferences there was an expressed need for more structured methods. In this research several existing methods have been surveyed and the methods most relevant to this issue are further described in this thesis. The main contribution of this thesis is an evaluation method using Real Options. The method provides the opportunity to analyze the cost of designing for flexibility to cope with a future growth of the product, based on the estimated value of the future functionality. To improve the usability an evaluation process is defined to aid engineers. This process provides a way of valuing system designs and enables the engineer to think about the future in a systematic manor. To analyze the resource usage within an embedded system a method is proposed on how to evaluate the resource efficiency of functions implemented within an automotive embedded system. The challenge of this work has been to develop methods that are found helpful to the industry and are easy enough to use so that designers are willing to try them again</p>

Study on Bandwidth-Efficient CDMA Systems

In this thesis a new type of ¡§Parallel Combinational CDMA System¡¨ will be introduced. The proposed scheme is one kind of multi-code CDMA systems, which can greatly increase the bandwidth efficiency of a communication system. We also propose a detection method, which in particular suits well the signal detection in a CDMA system based on the parallel combinational architecture. The proposed high bandwidth-efficient CDMA system can be used for any type of wireless communication systems with only a limited increase in hardware complexity, that is the need of a bank of correlator receiver in parallel to perform the signal detection. Both multiple access interference and multipath interference will be considered in the analysis given in this thesis. The study on the subject will also be accompanied by computer simulation, which will be used as a benchmark to the results obtained from the analysis. It is concluded from this thesis that the proposed new type of ¡§Parallel Combinational CDMA System¡¨ has a great potential for the applications in the future wireless communications.

The design and performance of a stand-alone solar and wind powered RTM House

This research project investigates the viability of using renewable energy sources and passive solar design in Saskatchewan, with its harsh climate, abundant energy resources, and absence of financial incentives for residential renewable energy systems. <p>An experimental Ready-To-Move (RTM) house, using passive solar design and stand-alone solar and wind power with gas generator backup, was designed and built and has been tested for a one year period from January to December, 2006.<p>The design methodology was based on well established design procedures for passive solar homes and renewable energy systems that are documented in the literature. A data collection system was used to record solar and wind charging currents, and battery status and temperature data was recorded on a daily basis. Average household loads were estimated from this data. <p>For 2006, the power generation of the solar array was 990 kWh, which was better than the expected output of 927 kWh. However, the wind generator produced only 475 kWh, which was substantially less the expected output of 1430 kWh. Average wind speeds were lower than the normal for 2006 and power production was less than the manufacturers projections for the specified wind speeds. Financial analysis showed that the lack of incentives and net metering made an off-grid system economically feasible only in remote locations where the cost of grid connection is over $20,000.
