Homeless population is a topic which has been more intensely studied since the beginning of the 90¿s, and from then on many definitions were created concerning who lives on the street and from the street, generating typologies for the homeless and segmenting the different phases of live. Therefore, the elderly people were given less attention. Concerning the homeless and, mainly the elderly homeless, it was necessary to identify which processes turned this social segment into a problem and an issue of political action. This paper work had, as a general objective, the intention of analyzing the implementation of a public action for the elderly homeless, from the opening of ¿Casa-Lar e Convivência São Vicente de Paula¿. The specific objectives were to analyze the life style of the elderly homeless while living on the streets and how the moving to the institution influenced their routine. The method applied was the action-search. As a result, we could observe that the previous lives of these elderly were diverse, although they had in common the impoverishment through out their lives, getting worse with the beginning of old age. Into this context we can establish an association between old age and abandonment, and between old age and the streets, what configures a duplicated marginal situation; to these elderly getting old meant the beginning of decadence. Besides, the search showed that these elderly people went through a situation of liminarity, of social humiliation and uprooting. The group of residents from ¿Casa-Lar¿ promoted a political visibility for the elderly homeless, redefined their roles and their field of action. The reporting from the elderly living in ¿Casa-Lar¿ showed that the experience of living on the streets was abrupt and caused a traumatic rupture, confirming the results from other studies about the homeless population. However, the narrative of their previous lives showed that the situation of rupture occurred gradually, through out their lives; these people constituted their histories into a liminar space and in between a more formalized situation and another situation characterized by the streets environment, by informal work and a clandestine political action. The searched elderly showed a high degree of resilience, as it¿s proposed by the paradigm of the span of live, the life-span. A gap was observed between the proposal of the institution and its practice directed to the residents. The treatment offered to the residents of ¿Casa-Lar¿ ended up reproducing an structure which associates the elderly and homeless to a decrepit reality and to idleness. ¿Casa-Lar¿ originated from a political action pervaded by interests of different institutions ¿ governmental and private ¿ that incorporated the necessity of an action directed to the elderly homeless, but without necessarily attending to the main demands. The creation of this institution was configured as an isolated action, yet committed to the reality lived by the elderly on the streets, what shows the restricted dimension of the political action in function, not into the social dimension proposed, but concerning the immediate demands and specific interests, without a valid restructuring conception about the elderly people who live on the streets and without effective and encircling policies / Mestrado / Gerontologia / Mestre em Gerontologia

Chronic Homelessness and the Aging Population: Findings in a Homeless Sample from ArkansasChekuri, Lakshminarayana 12 1900 (has links)
Understanding underlying mechanisms and pathways that lead to chronic homelessness would help develop intervention strategies that could help prevent subsequent episodes of homelessness. Quantitative data for this cross-sectional study was gathered by interviewing individuals who were homeless in the State of Arkansas, using a structured survey between 2007 and 2011. Qualitative data was gathered using semi-structured interviews between 2016 and 2018. Chi-square statistics and a multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyze the quantitative data, while phenomenological methods were used to analyze the qualitative data. Nearly half of the study participants identified themselves as being chronically homeless. Chronically homeless adults in this region were significantly more likely to be older men with no family ties, more likely to be victims of domestic violence, have higher rates of physical health problems, and have alcohol and substance abuse problems. Results from the multivariate nominal regression revealed that individuals who reported themselves as chronically homeless were more likely to be in the 50 years or older age group. In addition, study findings highlighted a dynamic interplay between three biopsychosocial risk factors for homelessness. Fostering development of inclusive sustainable communities, intergenerational relationships, and shared housing practices could help ease such social inequities and prevent problems such as chronic homelessness in older homeless adults.

<p> Existing in our society today are a number of people that live in the streets and use emergency shelter services for the basic needs of survival. This research report attempts to define the scale and nature of homelessness using Hamilton as a case study. It is a descriptive analysis that provides a synopsis of homelessness in Hamilton and provides recommendations based on individuals that directly work with the homeless. This research invovles a first hand perspective experience with working with the homeless. Therefore, it incorporates the human element involved in homelessness. </p> / Thesis / Bachelor of Arts (BA)
