Orientador: Júlio Borges de Souza / Banca: Luis Carlos Origa de Oliveira / Banca: Giuliano Pierre Estevam / Resumo: A transmissão de energia elétrica em corrente contínua em alta tensão é uma tecnologia utilizada para atender os requisitos cada vez mais rigorosos para a transmissão de energia elétrica, como por exemplo: adoção de fontes de energia localizadas em regiões remotas, a expansão das cargas industriais e urbanas, transmissão de energia elétrica por canais marítimos, etc. Esta tecnologia tem-se demonstrado comprovadamente eficaz e altamente confiável com a capacidade de modular a potência transmitida de forma rápida e precisa, apresentando características vantajosas do ponto de vista técnico e econômico. Porém, este tipo de tecnologia possui a desvantagem operacional de gerar conteúdo harmônico no sistema devido ao comportamento não linear dos conversores de potência utilizados para a conversão de corrente alternada em corrente contínua. Neste contexto, com o intuito de aplicar a metodologia de cálculo do conteúdo harmônico para o conversor de seis pulsos, o objetivo central do trabalho consiste no desenvolvimento de um simulador computacional para a determinação das harmônicas de correntes geradas pelas estruturas chaveadas dos conversores estáticos trifásicos, considerando condições não ideais de operação. O principal diferencial deste aplicativo computacional é proporcionar um ambiente visual interativo e intuitivo para a realização das simulações, apresentando de uma forma clara o objetiva os resultados dos parâmetros calculados pelo aplicativo e o resultado de cálculo do conteúdo harmônico de corrente gerado pelos conversores de potência. / Abstract: The power transmission in high voltage in direct current is a technology used to meet the increasingly stringent requirements for the transmission of electricity, such as: Adoption of energy sources located in remote areas, the expansion of industrial loads and urban, electrical transmission channels, marine, etc. This technology has demonstrated proven effective and highly reliable with the ability to model the power transmitted quickly and accurately, with advantageous features in terms of technical and economic. However, this type of technology has the disadvantage of generating harmonic content operating in the system due to nonlinear behavior of power converters used to convert alternating current into direct current. In this context, in order to apply the methodology of calculation of harmonic content for the six-pulse converter, the central objective of the work is to develop a software to determine the harmonic currents generated by switching structures of three-phase static converters, considering non-ideal operation. The main distinguishing feature of this application is to provide a computational interactive and intuitive visual environment to perform the simulations, showing a clear objective results of the parameters calculated by the application and the result of calculating the current harmonic content generated by power converters. / Mestre

Em sistemas de geração distribuída de energia usualmente se faz necessária a existência de um estágio elevador de tensão e um estágio inversor, ambos controlados para produzir tensão e/ou corrente senoidal com mesma frequência, amplitude e fase da rede elétrica. Nesse sentido, este trabalho propõe a aplicação do conversor fonte- Y entre a geração e a conexão com e rede elétrica, de forma que as ações de conversão relacionadas com a elevação (CC-CC) e inversão (CC-CA) sejam efetuadas de forma integrada por uma única estrutura, contribuindo com a possibilidade de melhoria no rendimento global devido à minimização de estágios de conversão em cascata. Inicialmente, é efetuado um levantamento bibliográfico relacionando as principais topologias de conversores utilizando redes de impedância com indutores acoplados, considerando os aspectos operacionais, arranjo de impedância e ganho estático idealizado, desprezando perdas entre tensão de entrada e tensão máxima de saída obtida. In photovoltaic energy generation systems, it is usually necessary to have a voltage boost stage and an inverter stage, both controlled to produce voltage and / or sine current with the same frequency, amplitude and phase of the power grid. In this sense, this work proposes the application of the Y-source converter between the photovoltaic generation and the connection with the electric grid, so that the conversion actions related to elevation (DC-DC) and inversion (DC-AC) in a way integrated by a single structure, contributing to the possibility of improvement in the overall yield due to the minimization of cascade conversion stages. Applications of pulse width modulation to LEDs, fuel cells and battery technology

It has become a case of great desire and, in some instances, a requirement to have systems in engineering be energy efficient, in addition to being effectively powerful. It is rare that there is a single technique that has the range to make this possible in a wide collection of areas in the field. The work done in this thesis exhibits how Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) bridges LEDs, plug in vehicles, fuel cells and batteries, all seemingly different sub categories of electrical engineering. It stems from an undergraduate directed independent study supervised by Dr. Zilouchian that encircled LEDs and electric vehicles and how they contribute to a smart electric grid. This thesis covers the design and development of a prototype board that test how PWM saves energy, prolongs lifespan and provides a host of customizable features in manufactured LED lights that are used in the marine industry. Additionally, the concept of charging batteries that provide power to electric vehicles was explored. It is stressed that consumers who are interested in electric vehicles are concerned about refueling and recharge times. It is natural that a competing product, such as the electric vehicle in a world dominated by internal combustion engines, will perform on par if not better than existing choices. Tests are conducted to investigate the methods of fast battery charging and the challenges this technique creates. Attention is also given to the development of a pulsed Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell, specifically to prove whether pulse modulation is more efficient in a hydrogen producing fuel cell as opposed to direct-driven voltage and current alternatives. / by Wayne W. Simulation of Switched Linear Networks

This thesis deals with the time-domain analysis of switched linear networks and investigates inherent problems which have to be considered when analyzing this class of networks. Computer simulation requires the use of numerical methods and we focus on the transmission -line modelling technique (TLM) and the numerical inverse Laplace transform. A general approach based on the one-graph modified nodal description is given which allows the formulation of circuit equations of a TLM-modelled circuit by inspection. The numerical equivalence of TLM and trapezoidal rule has been found and a proof is given. A variable step size simulator has been developed based on the 4th order numerical inverse Laplace transform. The properties of this method are reviewed and its limitations are discussed. Simulation results are given to illustrate capabilities of the simulator.

Circuit Modeling of Switched Linear Networks

The use of switched linear networks is prevalent in power processing systems such as dc-to-dc power converters. These converters provide regulated dc output power and are widely used in the power supplies for computers and peripherals. As with most systems where high performance is a criterion, the power converter is usually enclosed in a feedback loop. Feedback design usually entails the use of small signal (linear) models with linear feedback design techniques. There exists a large number of small signal models, but most of them are ad hoc. A describing function approach has previously been presented which determines the exact small signal frequency response of the converters. This method is now used to systematically derive circuit models for power converters. The aim of the work presented in this thesis is to model the nonlinear part of the switching converters which are simply the switches. This study is focused on the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) class of converters. Majority of available models are not very accurate because they are averaged models. The aim of the new approach is to obtain accurate and simple model. A partial realization of this aim has been achieved; the new model is accurate over a very wide frequency range, but presently the parameters are rather complicated.

High-frequency Analog Voltage Converter Design

For many high-speed, high-performance circuits, purely differential inputs are needed. This project focuses on building high-speed voltage converters which can transfer a single-ended signal to a purely differential signal, or a differential input signal to a single-ended signal. Operational transconductance amplifier (OTAs) techniques are widely used in high-speed continuous-time integrated analog signal processing (ASP) circuits because resistors, inductors, integrators, buffers, multipliers and filters can be built by OT As and capacitors. Taking advantage of OT As, very-high-speed voltage converters are designed in CMOS technology. These converters can work in a frequency range from DC (OHz) up to lOOMHz and higher, and keep low distortion over a± 0.5V input range. They can replace transformers so that designing fully integrated differential circuits becomes possible. The designs are based on a MOSIS 2μm n-well process. SPICE simulations of these designs are given. The circuit was laid out with MAGIC layout tools and fabricated through MOSIS. The chip was measured at PSU and Intel circuit labs and the experimental results show the correctness of the designs.

Dynamic interactions of electromagnetic and mechanical fields in electrically conductive anisotropic composites

Recent advances in manufacturing of multifunctional materials have provided opportunities to develop structures that possess superior mechanical properties with other concurrent capabilities such as sensing, self-healing, electromagnetic and heat functionality. The idea is to fabricate components that can integrate multiple capabilities in order to develop lighter and more efficient structures. In this regard, due to their combined structural and electrical functionalities, electrically conductive carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) matrix composites have been used in a wide variety of applications in most of which they are exposed to unwanted impact-like mechanical loads. Experimental data have suggested that the application of an electromagnetic field at the moment of the impact can significantly reduce the damage in CFRP composites. However, the observations still need to be investigated carefully for practical applications. Furthermore, as the nature of the interactions between the electro-magneto-thermo-mechanical fields is very complicated, no analytical solutions can be found in the literature for the problem. In the present thesis, the effects of coupling between the electromagnetic and mechanical fields in electrically conductive anisotropic composite plates are studied. In particular, carbon fiber polymer matrix (CFRP) composites subjected to an impact-like mechanical load, pulsed electric current, and immersed in the magnetic field of constant magnitude are considered. The analysis is based on simultaneous solving of the system of nonlinear partial differential equations, including equations of motion and Maxwell's equations. Physics-based hypotheses for electro-magneto-mechanical coupling in transversely isotropic composite plates and dimension reduction solution procedures for the nonlinear system of the governing equations have been used to reduce the three-dimensional system to a two-dimensional (2D) form. A numerical solution procedure for the resulting 2D nonlinear mixed system of hyperbolic and parabolic partial differential equations has been developed, which consists of a sequential application of time and spatial integrations and quasilinearization. Extensive computational analysis of the response of the CFRP composite plates subjected to concurrent applications of different electromagnetic and mechanical loads has been conducted. The results of this work verify the results of the previous experimental studies on the subject and yield some suggestions for the characteristics of the electromagnetic load to create an optimum impact response of the composite.
