Damage of bearings caused by electrical discharge currents at large drives derived from latest field research results

Tröger, Sven, Kröger, Matthias 28 February 2020 (has links)
Bearing currents are not all the same. Under certain circumstances and special use cases classic bearing insulations are not sufficient anymore to prevent bearing currents due to the operation of frequency converters. Additional corrective measures have to be implemented to reduce the source of bearing currents the common mode current. The usage of nanocrystalline tape wound cores shows high effectiveness. As part of a big field study with more than 50 large drive trains in the primary industry, the damaging mechanics of bearing currents are examined under real conditions. Of exceptional high interest is the influence of disturbances which can hardly be simulated in the laboratory. Additional to the shielded motor cable parallel installed functional potential equalization cables applied multiple times have almost no effect in regard to reducing the bearing current. With an optimal installed functional potential equalization system more than 95 percent of the common mode current can flow back through the motor cable shield to the converter. The disturbance impact in the field can influence the voltage over the bearing that breakthroughs are favored but also reduced.

Towards Achieving Better NOx Removal In Discharge Plasma Treatment Of Diesel Engine Exhaust

Sinha, Dipanwita 12 1900 (has links)
In India, the expansion of industries and two-fold increase in motor vehicles over the last decade are posing a serious environmental crisis in the form of urban air pollution. Common pollutants include carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), and nitrogen oxides produced by industry and motor vehicles. Air pollution results from a variety of sources. The natural sources include volcanoes, forest fire, scattering soil, biological decay, lightning strikes, dust storms etc. and man-made sources include thermal power plants, vehicular exhausts, incinerators and various other industrial emissions. More than 60% of the air pollution is contributed by these man-made sources. Amongst the gaseous pollutants, the major concern and a challenging task is to control oxides of nitrogen, commonly referred to as NOx. In case of diesel engines, despite the modification in engine design and improvement in after treatment technologies, large amount of NOx continues is get emitted and attempts to develop new catalyst to reduce NOx have so far been less successful. Further, with the emission standards becoming more stringent, estimates are that NOx and particulate matter emission must be reduced by as much as 90%. In this context, the emergence of electrical discharge plasma technique in combination with the few existing technologies is providing to be economically viable and efficient technology. In this thesis emphasis has been laid on the discharge based non-thermal plasma for NOx removal. NOx from simulated gas mixture and actual diesel engine exhaust has been treated. The thesis mainly addresses the following issues. . • Performance evaluation of pipe-cylinder and wire-cylinder reactor for NOx removal . • Study of effect of plasma assisted adsorbent reactor on NOx removal . • Study of effect of adsorption and plasma based desorption using different adsorbent material and electrode configuration The first chapter provides introduction about the air pollutants and the existing NOx control technologies, a brief history of electric discharge plasma, a detailed literature survey and scope of the work. A detailed experimental setup consisting of voltage sources, gas system (simulated flue gas and diesel exhaust), gas analyzers, adsorbent materials are discussed in the second chapter. In the third chapter, NOx is treated by three different methods and are described in separate parts. In first part we have done a comparative study of NO/NOx removal using two different types of dielectric barrier discharge electrodes: a) wire-cylinder reactor, b) pipe-cylinder reactor. Investigations were first carried out with synthetic gases to obtain the baseline information on the NO/NOx removal with respect to the two geometries studied. Further, experiments were carried out with raw diesel exhaust under loaded condition. A high NOx removal efficiency 90% was observed for pipe-cylinder reactor when compared to that with wire-cylinder reactor, where it was 53.4%. In second part an analysis has been made on discharge plasma coupled with an adsorbent system. The cascaded plasma-adsorbent system may be perceived as a better alternative for the existing adsorbent based abatement system in the industry. During this study the exhaust is sourced from a diesel generator set. It was observed that better NO removal in a plasma reactor can be made possible by achieving higher average fields and subsequent NO2 removal can be improved using an adsorbent system connected in cascade with the plasma system. This part describes the various findings pertaining to these comparative analyses. The third and last part of chapter 3 consists of gas desorption from an adsorbent by non-thermal plasma, which is an alternative to conventional thermal desorption, has been studied in relation to diesel engine exhaust. In this process saturated adsorbent material is regenerated using high energetic electrons and excited molecules produced by non thermal plasma. The last Chapter lists out the major inferences drawn from this study.

Etude expérimentale et modélisation de l'influence de la constitution chimique et de la répartition de la pollution sur le contournement des isolateurs haute tension / Experimental study and modelling of the influence of chemical constitution and repartition of pollution on flashover of H.V insulators

Slama, Mohammed El-Amine 13 July 2011 (has links)
This work aimed on optical and electrical characterization and mathematical modeling of flashover of polluted insulators, taking into account the applied voltage waveform, the distribution and chemical composition of pollutant deposit. Under lightning impulse voltage (1.2 /50μs), the morphology of the discharge and the associated currents depend on voltage (shape, amplitude, polarity), the distribution ofpollution and its conductivity. The measured average velocity of the discharge depends on the polarity applied to the tip and the pollution conductivity. The critical time corresponding to the critical conditions is about 9/10 of total flashover duration regardless of the polarity of the voltage and the pollution conductivity. The chemical composition of the pollution layer has little effect on the critical voltage unlike the critical currents. The values of the characteristic constants n and N depend on the chemical nature of the deposits and the voltage polarity. The developed model shows that the discharge constant characteristics n and N are dynamic parameters and depend on the elements of the equivalent electrical circuit system and thermal parameters of the discharge. The developed relationships of critical conditions of flashoverlink the electrical parameters and thermal equivalent circuit and the propagation condition of the discharge. This approach allows us tounderstand the effect of the chemical constitution of pollution on the values of n and N. The application of this model for various voltage waveforms and for several types of pollution, gives satisfactory results. The assumption that the column of the discharge contains only watervapor and air is a good approximation of the critical conditions. Under lightning impulse voltage, the current circulate into a effective section of the pollution surface. The introduction of the concept of critical effective thickness of pollution and its application to the calculation ofcritical parameters gives good results compared with the experimental values. We have also shown that the effective thickness of the depositis proportional to the resistivity of the pollution and depends on voltage polarity and pollution configuration. In the case of discontinuous deposit of pollution and / or non-uniform propagation conditions of discharges are local and their characteristic parameters vary dependingon the configuration and the conductivity of the deposit and the polarity of the applied voltage. The developed model gives good results

Dimensioning Of Corona Control Rings For EHV/UHV Line Hardware And Substations

Chatterjee, Sreenita 10 1900 (has links) (PDF)
High voltage (EHV and UHV) transmission facilitates transfer of large amount of power over long distances. However, due to the inherent geometry, the line and substation hardware of EHV and UHV class generate high electric fields, which results in local ionisation of air called corona discharges. Apart from producing audible noise in the form of frying or hissing sound, corona produces significant electromagnetic interferences in the radio range. The limit for this corona generated Radio Interference (RI) has been stipulated by international standards, which are strictly to be followed. In line and substation hardware, corona control rings are generally employed to limit or avoid corona. Standard dimensions of corona rings are not available for EHV and UHV class. In most of the cases, their design is based on either a trial and error method or based on empirical extrapolation. Only in certain specific cases, the dimensioning of the rings is carried out using electric field calculations. In any of these approaches, the unavoidable surface abrasions, which can lead to corona, are not considered. There are also efforts to account for nominal surface irregularity by using a surface roughness factor, which is highly heuristic. In order to address this practically relevant problem, the present work was taken up. The intended exercise requires accurate field computation and a suitable criterion for checking corona onset. For the first part, the Surface Charge Simulation Method is adopted with newly proposed sub-modelling technique. The surface of the toroid is discretised into curvilinear patches with linear approximation for the surface charge density. Owing to its high accuracy, Galerkin’s method of moments formulation is employed. The problem of singularity encountered in the numerical approach is handled using a method based on Duffy’s transformation. The developed codes have also been validated with standard geometries. After a survey of relevant literature the ‘Critical Avalanche Criteria’ is chosen for its simplicity and applicability to the problem. Through a detailed simulation, the effect of avalanche space charge in reducing the corona onset voltage is found to be around 1.5% and hence it is not considered further. For utilities not interested in a detailed calculation procedure for dimensioning of corona rings, design curves are developed for circular corona rings of both 400 kV and 765 kV class with surface roughness factor in the range 0.8 – 1. In the second part of the work, a methodology for dimensioning is developed wherein the inevitable surface abrasion in the form of minute protrusions can be accounted. It is first shown that even though considerable field intensification occurs at the protrusions, such localised modification need not lead to corona. It is shown that by varying the minor radius of the corona ring, it is possible to get a design where the prescribed surface abrasion does not lead to corona onset. In summary, the present work has successfully developed a reliable methodology for the design of corona rings with prescribed surface abrasions. It involved development of an efficient field computation technique for handling minute surface protrusions and use of appropriate criteria for assessing corona inception. It has also provided design curves for EHV and UHV class corona rings with surface roughness factor specified in the range 0.8 – 1.0.

Aplikace elektrického výboje v kapalinách pro čistění nekovových archeologických předmětů / Application of electric discharge in liquids for surface cleaning of non-metallic archaeological objects

Tihonová, Jitka January 2020 (has links)
This diploma thesis is focused on the plasma surface treatment of historical glass from the 18th and 19th centuries by low temperature electrical discharges in solutions of sodium chloride and potassium carbonate and finding the most suitable settings of conditions for the surface cleaning. Stainless steel electrode and a specially designed electrode system with wolfram wire in the quartz glass capillary were used for the generation of discharge using an audio frequency power supply. Each line of samples was made from one piece of historical glass that was cut to smaller pieces. All cleaned samples were photographed before and after the cleaning so the possible changes of the cleaned area could be visually compared. Then the samples were analysed by LA-ICP-MS (line scanning of surface), where was analysed the cleaned area of samples, and values were compared to the analysis of the reference sample that was not cleaned. Examined isotopes of elements were selected on the basis of the supposed composition of glass, corrosion products, and soil at the place of discovery. Analyses were standardized by NIST 610. Acquired values were transferred to oxides. The most important oxides (Na2O, MgO, SiO2, P2O5 a K2O) were chosen for deciding the most effective cleaning settings. It was decided that the most effective setting for cleaning was the one where the biggest difference of values between sample and reference occurred. Four series of these solutions were compiled and one parameter was changed for each of them. Solutions and their conductivity, frequency of the power supply, and time of cleaning were chosen as changing values. Three samples of different times of cleaning were cleaned without interruption. The time of cleaning was split into intervals of 30 seconds of cleaning and 1 minute of non-action for another two samples of this series. In this way we were trying to find out if the following surface analysis will be influenced by the diffusion of the particles into the sample, or not. The frequency of power supply was recorded and its dissipated power was calculated for each measurement. Emission spectra of a series of different solution conductivity were measured before cleaning of samples. Measurement of OES was made with the ignition of discharge so the active species of plasma were shown in spectra. These species are probably participating in the cleaning process of glass. Emission spectra were also measured after cleaning to find out if values of active species were changed or unknown spectral lines appeared. These lines should be from dirt and corrosion products that were cleaned from the surface of the glass. It was found out that the most effective cleaning of sample 1 (series where the conductivity of the NaCl solution was changed) was done in a solution of conductivity 900 S/cm. The most effective cleaning of sample 4 and sample 7 (series where the conductivity of the K2CO3 solution was changed) was done in a solution of conductivity 600 S/cm. The most effective cleaning of sample 6 (series where the frequency was changed) was done at frequency = (15200 ± 30) Hz. The most effective cleaning of sample 5 (series of different cleaning times) lasted seven minutes without time delay. The future research it should be appropriate to try a combination of these most effective cleaning settings on the surface of more samples, so the finding of this thesis will be confirmed.
