Κεχαγιάς, Αργύριος 19 January 2010 (has links)

Μπερεδήμας, Νικόλαος 11 May 2010 (has links)

Σατραζέμη, Κωνσταντία 25 January 2012 (has links)
The best geometric simulation of the human brain is achieved by an ellipsoidal system. The Electroencephalography (EEG) concerns the measurements of the electric potential on the surface of the head, which is generated from neuronal current inside the head. In this thesis we have produced the necessary ellipsoidal harmonics of the fifth, sixth and seventh degree. Then, we use these new ellipsoidal harmonic functions to express the full analytical potential of EEG, up to the seventh degree. The present thesis is structured in the following way: In chapter 1 we describe, in short, the physiology which develops the potentials in and outside the brain and how they are transmitted through the neuronal current. In chapter 2 we describe the ellipsoidal geometry as well as the form of the Laplace operator in ellipsoidal coordinates. We consider the solutions of Lame equation, the way Lame constructed them and we describe the corresponding ellipsoidal harmonics. In chapter 3 we report the ellipsoidal harmonics of degree zero through three. In chapters 4, 5, 6 and 7 we develop the ellipsoidal harmonics of degree 4, 5, 6 and 7 respectively. The applications of these functions form the main part of the present master thesis. Finally, in chapter 8 we use all the known ellipsoidal harmonics to express the relative component of the electrical potential. This component belongs to the subspace generated by the first 64 ellipsoidal harmonics.

Ρουμπά, Μαριάνθη 15 May 2012 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Mirna Delposo Lozano.pdf: 1463468 bytes, checksum: bbd20a7a5bd6a05109d938c02309c9a0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-03-07 / The practice of yoga has become more popular increasingly not only for the physical benefits, but mostly for the psychological well-being brought by its practice. One of the components of yoga is Prãnãyama, or breath control. Attention and breathing are two physiological and involuntary mechanisms required for the implementation of Prãnãyama. The aim of this study was to determine whether continuous variables of EEG (power of different groups that compose it) would be modulated by the respiratory control, comparing both phases, inspiration and expiration, separately. The participants were 19 subjects (7 men/12 women, mean age 36.89, SD = ± 14.46), who were invited to participate in the research at the Faculdade de Saúde da Universidade Metodista de São Paulo. For the record of the EEG a positioning system of five electrodes Ag AgCl (Fpz, Fz, Cz, Pz and Oz) was used, fixed to a fast positioning cap (Quick-Cap, Neuromedical Supplies®) in 10-20 system. Maximum range of power values were obtained (power spectrum in the frequency domain) in theta frequencies, alpha, beta and delta and theta/beta ratio was calculated in the different phases of the respiratory cycle (inspiration and expiration), separately, in spontaneous breathing conditions and respiratory control. For the record of the respiratory cycle, a respiratory effort belt M01 (plethysmograph) was used. The results show significant differences between the conditions of spontaneous and controlled breathing with higher mean values of theta/beta ratio in the inspiration of spontaneous breathing than in controlled breathing, and mean values of alpha power higher in controlled breathing. Significant differences were found in the comparison between inspiration and expiration of controlled breathing with decreased values of the mean of theta/beta ratio in inspiration and an increase in mean values of alpha power in expiration. The findings of this study provide evidence that the respiratory control modulates electrophysiological variables related to attention, reflecting an alert status, but more relaxed compared to the spontaneous breathing situation.

CORRELATOS ELETROFISIOLÓGICOS DE MODIFICAÇÕES DA ATENÇÃO EM LONGO PRAZO / Electroohysiological correlates of long term modifications of attention

No. of bitstreams: 1 Henrique Adam Pasquini.pdf: 888682 bytes, checksum: 3ba99f5587a48f9130c806e394f12f25 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-08-28 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Attention is probably one of the oldest theoretical constructs in Psychology. In the Eastern countries, meditation has been seen as a group of technics that goals to train people to focus attention. This research aims to check its electrophysiological correlates, taking into consideration the long term changes accompanying regular practice of meditation. We have used modern technics of high resolution electroencephalography analyze slow potentials, power in various bands, and event-related band-power. We recorded the EEG using a 128-channel montage, in 31 subjects (17 meditators). We analyzed the type of meditation related to a Zen Buddhist practice of the Soto school, which belongs to the group of mindfulness meditation. The goal of the research was to verify if the power on the beta band would rise. However, not quite what we expected, no significant changes were detected on the beta band. On the other hand, the main finding of this research was that the weekly practice of meditation is associated with a rise in the induced relative theta band power, an increase in the ratio of induced power (theta/beta), and an increase in the ratio of the induced relative band power (theta/beta), which occurred during an adapted meditation task. We also noticed that the practice of meditation was related to a decrease of the alpha peak frequency during the task of focused attention. We discuss the decrease of the alpha peak frequency with respect to the hypothesis of brain efficiency. On the other hand, the increase of the induced relative theta band power and of the ratio of theta/beta induced power bands, during the adapted meditation task, suggests that the plain attention type of meditation is rather related to a deliberate loss of attention, by the permissive distractions of the meditators.

Learning without feedback: detection, quantification and implications of implicit learning

Luehr, Stephen J.C. 04 September 2018 (has links)
Mounting evidence has suggested that structures such as the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and other areas within the medial-frontal cortex are part of a reinforcement learning system responsible for the optimization of behaviour (Holroyd & Coles, 2002). However, we also learn without reinforcement and it has been less clear what neural structures are recruited in these instances. The P300 component of the human event-related brain potential (ERP) has been intensely researched in regards to context updating and the processing of novel stimuli (Spencer, Dien, & Donchin, 2001). Here, I sought to elaborate on the role of the P300 ERP component in implicit learning of stimulus frequencies – learning driven by the stimulus itself and not reward feedback. I propose over the course of three experiments that I have provided evidence indicating that the P300 and its neural sources play a role in feedback-free learning mechanisms. Specifically, in a feedback-free paradigm participants are shown to learn stimulus frequencies. While this occurs, P300 amplitude scales in line with participant behaviour and stimulus frequency. A common trend is revealed in how quickly this amplitude scaling occurs, suggesting further mechanisms are at play. Trial-by-trial analysis ultimately shows that behavioural prediction error formula and neural correlate prediction errors utilize a nearly identical function. These trends hold even in a passive auditory task in which the participant is fully distracted. / Graduate

Effects of meditation training on attentional networks: A randomized controlled trial examining psychometric and electro-physiological (EEG) measures

Joshi, Aditi A. 12 1900 (has links)
x, 133 p. ; ill. (some col.) A print copy of this title is available through the UO Libraries under the call number: SCIENCE QP405 .J67 2007 / Meditation has been defined as a "group of practices that self-regulate the body and mind, thereby affecting mental events by engaging a specific attentional set" (Cahn & Polich, 2006). We conducted a randomized, longitudinal trial to examine the effects of concentrative meditation training (40 min/day, 5 days/week for 8 weeks) on top-down, voluntary control of attention with a progressive muscle relaxation training group as a control. To determine if training produced changes in attentional network efficiency we compared, pre- and post-training, mean validity effect scores (difference between invalid cue and center cue reaction time) in the contingent capture paradigm (Folk et al., 1992). The meditation group showed a trend towards improvement of top-down attention while the relaxation group did not. Using EEG we assessed the changes in amplitudes of wavelets during periods of mind-wandering and meditation. Periods in which subjects were on- vs. off-focus during the meditation task were identified by asking subjects to make button presses whenever the mind wandered and also at probe tones, if they were off-focus. After training, the episodes of mind-wandering were significantly lower in the meditation group as compared to the relaxation group. Increased amplitudes of alpha and theta EEG frequencies in the occipital and right parietal areas were seen during the meditation task for the meditation but not the relaxation group as an effect of training. A baseline EEG trait effect of reduced mental activity was seen (meditation training: occipital and right parietal areas; relaxation training: only occipital areas). Within a given meditation session, prior to training, alpha and theta activity was lower in on-focus conditions (occurring immediately after subjects discovered they were off-focus and returned to active focus on the breath/syllable) compared to meditative focus segments. After training, we found higher alpha amplitude in periods of meditative focus as compared to periods of mind wandering for both groups. However, the meditation group showed significantly higher theta amplitude than the relaxation group during the meditative state segments. / Adviser: Marjorie Woollacott

Daronch, Cláudia January 2012 (has links)
Skilled performers develop an ability to perceive and process a vast amount of information with speed and accuracy, as well as to perform efficient adjustments when necessary (Schmidt and Wrisberg 2001). Cortically to achieve this finer control, sensorimotor integration is the key. This integration consists in continuous processing, by the motor system, the sensory afferents that prepare for the motor act and improve the performance of activities for fine motor control (Minc et al., 2010). Physical activities that differ over exactly how its practitioners need to process sensory information to generate movement should result in distinct sensorimotor integration. This study aims to analyze the electroencephalography activity of individuals with perceptual-motor skills (highly skilled individuals with training in dance/TD and training in volleyball/TV) evoked by action simulation tasks. The study sample was intentional and composed of 14 right-handed participants; each group consisted of 07 women aged between 18 and 29 years. Through EEG were extracted parameters mean energy (cortical processing over time), amplitude (number of neural elements involved in the task) and frequency (oscillating rhythm predominant) in alpha and gamma bands in the brain signal points C3, C4, Cz (primary motor cortex), F3 (left supplementary motor area), F7 (left premotor cortex), P3, P4 and Pz (parietal cortex), evoked by tasks involving observation and imagination of specific gestures of both training and gestures considered neutral. The main results provided evidence that the TD group presented the tasks of dance, a higher cortical processing over time in points for the primary motor cortex (Minc et al., 2010), left premotor cortex (Freund and Hummelsheim, 1984) and left supplementary motor area (Serrien et al. 2002); greater number of neural elements involved in the task at point for the left primary motor cortex; differences in the main frequency component of the alpha rhythm in the left primary motor cortex , and differences in the main component of the frequency gamma in the right primary motor cortex. In tasks relating to training volleyball, VT group showed lower processing over time at parietal points (Wolpert et al. 1998); smaller number of neural elements involved in the task at points related to left primary motor cortex and left premotor and main component difference in the frequency gamma in the left primary motor cortex. In the tasks considered neutral differences were found between groups in the right primary motor cortex in the alpha rhythm and in the right parietal cortex in the gamma rhythm. The results found in this study at the parameters that represent the cortical processing, that reflect the number of neuronal elements involved in the task and which represent the predominant rhythm oscillatory clearly demonstrated that cortical regions involved in sensorimotor integration showed differences in how the two groups processed sensory information and prepared the gesture motor. Taken together, these results demonstrate that each group had a consistent pattern of sensorimotor processing, regardless of the task. This evidence allows us to conclude that individuals with different perceptual-motor skills have distinct sensorimotor integration.
