Managing learner aggression in rural secondary schools in the Empangeni District of KwaZulu-Natal

The aim of this study was to investigate the causes and consequences of learner aggression in rural secondary schools in the Empangeni District of KwaZulu-Natal. The study also sought to establish the management strategies required to manage learner aggression in rural secondary schools. An in-depth literature study was conducted in this regard. A qualitative research design and methodology was adopted to investigate the phenomenon through an interview process with participants from five rural secondary schools. This study found that the causes of learner aggression were rooted in the family, the environment and the school. It was further established that the consequences of learner aggression were so serious that it resulted in victims experiencing intense fear, anxiety, tension, depression and ill-health. Furthermore, the findings of the empirical investigation concurred, to a large extent, with the findings of the literature study. Based on these findings, recommendations were made regarding the management of learner aggression in rural secondary schools. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. Ed. (Education Management)

Management strategies for establishing discipline in primary classrooms in a KwaZulu-Natal district

The aim of this study was to investigate the management strategies conducive to establishing constructive discipline for optimal learning. The study represented a case study conducted in a primary school in the Empangeni district of KwaZulu-Natal. An in-depth literature study was followed by an empirical investigation based on a qualitative research design employing focus group and individual interviews. The research findings revealed that optimal learning is achieved through effective classroom management practices promoting constructive discipline. A classroom environment in which constructive discipline prevails includes the organisation of the physical environment in a functional way, the consideration of instructional strategies such as teachers being well-prepared for the lesson, as well as class routines and procedures being well communicated. Based on the findings of the empirical investigation, and concurring with the findings from literature, recommendations were made regarding classroom management strategies for constructive discipline in order to arrange for optimal learning. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. Land degradation and settlement intensification in Umhlathuze Municipality

Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The multifaceted land degradation problem and its associated manifold impacts have attracted research from different disciplines, resulting in varying definitions of the concept. However, most researchers agree that human intervention that deteriorates the state of the environment is the central element. Among the anthropogenic activities that exacerbate land degradation, land cover has been singled out as the salient element. Rapid and unplanned land cover changes are primary manifestations of this problem. UMhlathuze Municipality, the study area which has superior biodiversity richness, is one of fastest growing municipalities in South Africa and is the locale of significant land modifications in recent decades because of a variety of industrial and residential developments. Using Landsat TM imagery acquired for 1984, 1996 and 2004, this study mapped and quantified land cover change and manifestations of land degradation in the uMhlathuze Municipality in conjunction with settlement intensification computed from orthophotographs acquired for 1984 and 2004. Census population statistics were analysed as a reflection of population dynamics and further to gauge related causes of land cover change. Geographical information technology (GIT) was applied as an analytical tool. The results revealed the anthropogenic influences that led to changes in land cover over the 20- year period between 1984 and 2004. The dominant natural cover classes in 1984 declined continuously and human-dominated land categories had increased sharply by 2004. Much of grasslands, forest and wetlands were converted to monotypical agroforestry (sugar cane and forestry plantations), built-up settlement and mining. These changes engendered complete loss of biodiversity (floral and migration of fauna). Bare ground, signifying land degradation, was noticeable although it exhibited a fluctuating trend which could be attributable to differences between the various imagery used. Along with population growth, the area of settlements increased over the study period and spatially sprawled from urban areas. Settlements showed a fairly stable spatial configuration over the 20-year period, but became magnified in medium- and high-density areas. Grassland and wetlands occurring around Richards Bay, as well as indigenous forest near Port Durnford, were identified as critically threatened ecosystems. The proposed industrial development zone and port expansion were recognized as having adverse ecological implications for wetlands. The study concluded that significant land cover changes occurred in the form of natural land cover giving way to monotypical agroforestry, built-up settlements and mining - all to the detriment of pristine natural habitat. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die veelvlakkige probleem van omgewingsdegradasie en die gepaardgaande veelsoortige impakte lok navorsing uit verskillende dissiplines, wat lei tot verskillende definisies van die konsep. Tog is die meeste navorsers dit eens dat menslike invloede die sentrale element is wat die toestand van die omgewing verswak. Van die vele menslike aktiwiteite is grondgebruikverandering uitgesonder as die belangrikste beïnvloeder van agteruitgang van die omgewing. Veral vinnige en onbeplande grondgebruikveranderinge verteenwoordig die primêre manifestasies van hierdie probleem. UMhlathuze Munisipaliteit, die studiegebied met 'n hoë biodiversiteitsrykdom, is een van die vinnigste groeiende munisipaliteite in Suid-Afrika, waar 'n verskeidenheid nywerheids- en residensiële ontwikkelings beduidende grondgebruikverandering oor die afgelope dekades dryf. Met behulp van Landsat TM beelde van 1984, 1996 en 2004, is hierdie studiegebied gekarteer en oppervlaktes gekwantifiseer om grondgebruikverandering en verwante manifestasies van die agteruitgang van landbedekking in die uMhlathuze Munisipaliteit te konstateer. Die dominante natuurlike dekkingsklasse in 1984 het voortdurend verminder en menslik-gedomineerde kategorieë het teen 2004 skerp gestyg. Baie van die grasvelde, woude en vleilande is daadwerklik omskep tot monotipiese agro-bosbou (suikerrieten bosbouplantasies), beboude nedersetting en mynbou. Hierdie veranderinge behels 'n volledige verlies van biodiversiteit (plantegroei en migrasie van fauna). Kaalgrond, wat dui op die agteruitgang van grondbedekking, was ook opvallend, hoewel dit 'n wisselende tendens toon wat ook kan wees as gevolg van die verskille tussen die beeldmateriaal wat gebruik is. Saam met die groei van die bevolking is bevind dat nedersettings oor die studieperiode toegeneem het en in tipiese spreipatrone weg van die stedelike gebiede uitbrei. Nedersettings het 'n redelik stabiele ruimtelike liggingsopset oor die tydperk van 20 jaar getoon, maar het in medium- en hoë- digtheid gebiedeverdeel. Die voorkoms van grasveld en vleiland rondom Richardsbaai, asook inheemse woud naby Port Durnford, is geïdentifiseer as krities-bedreigde ekosisteme. Die voorgestelde nywerheidsontwikkelingsone en hawe-uitbreiding is geïdentifiseer as ontwikkelings met nadelige ekologiese implikasies vir vleilande. Daar is dus tot die gevolgtrekking gekom dat beduidende voortgaande grondbedekkingveranderinge in die gebied voorkom, waarin natuurlike landdekking transformeer tot monotipiese agrobosbou, beboude nedersettings en mynbou - alles tot nadeel van die ongerepte natuurlike habitat.

The management of inclusive education in the four selected junior primary schools in the Empangeni district, KwaZulu-Natal

Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Technology: Education, Durban University of Technology, 2013. / This study investigated the management of inclusive education in the four selected junior primary schools in the Empangeni District, KwaZulu-Natal. Despite the fact that the White Paper 6 on Special Needs Education and Training: Building Inclusive Education and Training System was released in 2001, aiming at providing quality education for all learners, the implementation and management of inclusive education in schools still remain a challenge. This research, therefore, investigated possible challenges and suggested solutions that could be used for the effective implementation and management of inclusive education in schools. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: i. What are the challenges at school level that delay the implementation of inclusive education? ii. What skills do teachers and principals have or acquired in order to identify and support learners who experience barriers to learning and development? iii. What are the teachers’ perceptions regarding the inclusion of learners who experience barriers to learning and development? iv. Does our education system provide teachers with relevant training to meet the challenges that come with inclusive education? An ethnographic research was conducted in four junior primary schools at the Empangeni District, KwaZulu- Natal to find out what happens in their school setting. Fifteen foundation phase teachers from four junior primary schools, four principals and six final year university student teachers participated in the study. The findings of data collected from teachers, principals and student teachers regarding their views on inclusion of learners who experience barriers to learning were used to make recommendations. The findings from the study revealed the need for schools to effectively implement the White Paper 6 on Special Needs Education and Training: Building Inclusive Education and Training System (2001). Inclusion of learners who experience barriers to learning and development is an international initiative, which aims to provide quality education for all learners. The success of inclusion is based on the adoption and implementation of the international, national and provincial inclusive education policies, declarations and guidelines. In this study, it became evident that there is a shortage of teachers who have specialization in Special Education: Barriers to Learning. In- service teacher training and special education element should be included in all courses of initial teacher training. Ongoing professional development of teachers on inclusive education issues is also crucial. Teachers need to be provided with necessary skills to identify developmental delays and barriers to learning early. This study highlighted the importance of the establishment of the functional support structures, Institutional Level Support Team and District Based Support Team so that inclusive education is effectively managed in the education system. Provision of skills that will assist teachers to provide relevant support to learners who experience barriers to learning, lies on the existence of the support structures. The findings also revealed that schools or any other stakeholder cannot address barriers to learning in isolation. Linkages with Tertiary Institutions, Department of Health, Department of Social Development, Non-Governmental Organizations, parents/ caregivers and teacher unions need to be prioritized, in order to ensure that diverse needs of learners are met and barriers to learning and development are addressed. The positive response from the National Department of Education to the international initiatives for promoting single inclusive education system that is responsive to the diverse needs of all learners, resulted to the release of the White Paper 6 on Special Needs Education and Training: Building Inclusive Education and Training System in 2001. The need to close the gap between theory outlined in all the policies and guidelines that promote inclusive education and practice becomes evident in this study. The management of inclusive education in schools, therefore requires the School Management Team to facilitate, amongst other things, human resource development and establishment of the Institutional Level Support Team.

The role of industries in providing basic life-skills education to unskilled black employees in the Empangeni/Richards Bay industrial areas

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Historically, the majority of South Africans were denied access to free, compulsory and general education (National Multi-Plan, 1997:1). This means that many citizens did not have access to that educational foundation necessary for further learning, quality employment opportunities or even full and active social and political participation. Various arguments throughout this study imply that the South African education system presented unequal educational opportunities for most of its people. In this case, Black Education failed to produce people with the necessary skills for our economy. To compensate these people, the opportunities for education should be created everywhere in schools, sports clubs, NGOs and more importantly, in workplaces because education is the key for survival. Due to the need for economic growth and the need for skilled workers, large numbers of adults should be provided with extensive adult education. In other words, industries should become educational centres where employees could be equipped with numeracy and literacy programmes which would improve production and basic life-skills necessary to meet the demands of the economy at large. The study sought to find out "what role the two industries play in providing basic life-skills education to unskilled Black employees in the Empangeni/Richards Bay industrial areas". This was an empirical survey involving the target population of unskilled Black employees and facilitators of the adult education programmes of the lllovo Sugar Milling and Spoornet industries. In this study two different types of questionnaires were designed and used to ascertain the respondents' disposition towards adult education programmes. In each industry one questionnaire was administered to the unskilled Black employees and another to the facilitators of adult education progarmnes. The research sample comprised of seven unskilled Black employees from lllovo, twentyfive unskilled Black employees from Spoomet, two facilitators from Illovo and another two facilitators from Spoornet industries. The data collected from the sample attempted to answer the following research questions: ./ What basic day-to- day life-skills are needed by unskilled Black employees in the industries? ./ How effective are these programmes to unskilled Black employees in the industries? ./ How accessible are these programmes to unskilled Black employees? These questions necessitated a literature study and an empirical survey as research tools. It has emerged from the study that adult education is seen as an agent for social change and instrument for social development. The study seeks to assess the extent to which these programmes: .:. Fulfil the day-to-day basic needs of unskilled Black employees, in for example, financial management or identifying and using sources of informatiom like directories and maps . •:. Fulfil the literacy and numeracy needs of unskilled Black employees, in for example, appending signatures, reading newspapers and bank forms . •:. Cultivate good habits in the workplace such as punctuality, time management, safety precautions and proper procedures. The findings reveal that adult education programmes in industries were valuable and useful to employees as they were able to transfer the skills acquired from the programme to the real world situation. These life-skills included counting money, writing names and letters, appending signatures, reading newspapers and safety precautions signs, understanding road signs and making telephone calls. The researcher concludes with a number of recommendations including the following: ~ Each industry should establish a building named a 'college' or 'centre' within its premises where adult education programmes will be presented. ~ Each industry should have its own policy documents regarding the provision of worker life-skills education. ~ All workers have a right to paid education and training leave. This means that skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled workers should be entitled to four or six weeks of paid leave per year for further education throughout their working life. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: As gevolg van die historiese en politieke ontwikkeling in Suid-Afrika is die meerderheid van die bevolking toegang tot vrye, verpligte en algemene onderwys ontsê (National Multi- Plan, 1997: 1). Dit het tot gevolg gehad dat die meerderheid van die bevolking dus ook nie toegang gehad het tot verdere onderwys en gevolglik ook nie tot goeie werksgeleenthede en dus deelname aan die maatskaplike en politieke lewe ontneem is. In hierdie navorsing word minderwaardige onderwysgeleenthede wat aan die meeste swart mense gegee is uitgewys. Dit het tot gevolg gehad dat swart onderwys nie die opgeleide menslike hulpbronne kon lewer wat die ekonomie nodig gehad het nie. Ekonomiese groei is afhanklik van opgeleide menslike hulpbronne en om dit moontlik te maak behoort onderwysgeleenthede in groot getalle vir volwassenes geskep te word. Daarom behoort skoolfasiliteite, sportklubs, nie-regeringsorganisasies en die werkplek benut te word om onderwys aan die ongeletterde volwassene te gee. Dit impliseer dat nywerhede geleenthede vir geletterdheids- en syfervaardigheidsprogramme vir hulle werkers behoort te skep sodat hulle toegerus kan word met basiese lewensvaardighede en sodoende hulle lewenskwaliteit en produktiwiteit verhoog kan word. Met die navorsing is gepoog om vas te stel watter rol nywerhede in die Empangeni- /Richardsbaai-gebied speel in die verskaffing van onderwys in basiese lewensvaardighede aan hulle ongeskoolde swart werkers. Twee verskillende vraelyste en onderhoude is gebruik om data in te samel by 'n steekproef van die ongeskoolde swart werkers en die fasiliteerders van onderwysprogramme aan volwassenes by Illovo Suikermeule en Spoornet. Daar is gepoog om die respondente se houdings ten opsigte van onderwysprogramme aan volwassenes in dié twee nywerhede vas te stel. Die navorsinsteekproef het sewe ongeskoolde swart werkers en twee fasiliteerders van Illovo Suikermeule en vyf-en-twintig ongeskoolde swart werkers en twee fasiliteerders van Spoornet ingesluit. Met behulp van die ingesamelde data van die steekproef is gepoog om die volgende vrae te beantwoord: - Watter basiese lewensvaardighede benodig die ongeskoolde swart werkers in hierdie twee nywerhede? - Watter onderwysprogramme vir volwassenes is deur die twee nywerhede daargestelom in die onderwysbehoeftes in basiese lewensvaardighede van die ongeskoolde swart werkers te voorsien? Hoe toeganklik is hierdie programme vir die ongeskoolde swart werkers? Hoe effektief is die programme vir ongeskoolde swart werkers in die twee nywerhede? Om die vrae te probeer beantwoord was dit noodsaaklik om 'n literatuurstudie te doen, 'n vraelysopname te onderneem en onderhoude te voer. Die doelstellings met die navorsing was om te bepaal in watter mate die onderwysprogramme vir volwassenes in die twee nywerhede: voorsien in die daaglikse behoeftes van ongeskoolde swart werkers byvoorbeeld om hulle finansies te bestuur en om inligtingsbronne soos gidse en kaarte te identifiseer en te gebruik; voorsien in die geletterdheids - en syfervaardigheidsbehoeftes van ongeskoolde swart werkers soos die gebruik van 'n handtekening, die lees van koerante en die invul van bankvorms; lei tot 'n bewuswording en 'n besef van die belangrikheid van onderwys aan ongeskoolde swart werkers; ongeskoolde swart werkers voorberei om akademiese ondersteuning, soos byvoorbeeld hulpverlening met skoolwerk, aan hulle kinders te voorsien; 'n bewuswording skep van die maatskaplike, politieke, kulturele en ekonomiese verband waarin ongeskoolde swart werkers hulle bevind. Dit sluit die verskaffing van onderwys in basiese lewensvaardighede met betrekking tot vigs, gesinsbeplanning en kiesersopvoeding in; en die aankweek van goeie gewoontes in die werksituasie soos stiptelikheid. tydsbestuur, die toepassing van veiligheidsmaatreëls in die gebruik van korrekte procedures tot gevolg het. Die bevindinge van die navorsing dui daarop dat onderwysprogramme aan volwassenes in die nywerhede waardevol en nuttig vir die ongeskoolde swart werkers is aangesien dit hulle in staat stelom die vaardighede wat hulle aangeleer het na die werklike alledaagse lewenssituasie oor te dra. Hierdie vaardighede sluit onder andere in die tel van geld, die skryf van hulle name en briewe, die gebruik van 'n handtekening vir die ondertekening van dokumente, die lees van koerante en kennisgewings i.v.m. veiligheidsmaatreëls, die verstaan van padtekens en die maak van telefoonoproepe. Dit blyk ook uit die navorsing dat onderwysprogramme aan volwassenes as 'n werktuig van maatskaplike ontwikkeling beskou word. Die aanbevelings wat op grond van die bevindinge van die navorsing gemaak word, sluit onder andere die volgende in: Nywerhede wat groot getalle ongeskoolde swart werkers in diens het, behoort 'n beleid ten opsigte van onderwysprogramme in basiese lewensvaardighede aan werkers te hê. Elke nywerheid behoort fisiese fasiliteite vir die aanbieding van onderwysprogramme aan volwassenes op die perseel te hê. Hierdie fisiese fasiliteit kan 'n "kollege" of ,,s»entrum genoem wor d. Alle werkers behoort die reg te hê op vier tot ses weke betaalde onderwys-en opleidingsverlof per jaar.

An exploration of grade 11 teachers' conceptions of practical work in physical sciences within the national curriculum statement (NCS) curriculum.

The introduction of the National Curriculum statement (NCS) in Further Education and Training (FET) phase in 2005 had a great impact on classroom practice, resulting in a shift to Outcomes Based Education (OBE). The Physical Sciences curriculum created challenges for Physical Science teachers. The Learning Outcome (LO)-1 recommends that scientific inquiry and inquiry based practical work be taught in Physical Sciences lessons. However, much remains to be understood regarding teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) in inquiry based practical work. This study explored the conception of practical work by Grade 11 Physical Sciences teachers within the NCS curriculum. Using the PCK as a theoretical lens, the study explored how the Physical Sciences teachers used practical work in their teaching. Furthermore, the exploration sought to ascertain whether there was any relationship between teachers’ perceptions of the purpose of practical work and their use of practical work. The data was collected by interviewing two Grade 11 Physical Sciences teachers and also by conducting some classroom observations involving practical work to ascertain teachers’ actual practice. The sample was drawn from two high schools at Empangeni District, in Northern KwaZulu-Natal. The findings revealed that teachers value using practical work in teaching of Physical Sciences. Qualitative data analysis enables recommendation to be made for the improvement of the use of inquiry-based practical work in the teaching of Physical Sciences. Both teachers held the view that the most important aim of practical work was to promote conceptual understanding. During their teaching, both teachers use practical work to verify theory through non-inquiry practical instructional practices and strategies. However, there were limiting factors which do not provide opportunities for teachers to engage learners in inquirybased practical work. Amongst the factors that were reported by the teachers as limiting their use of inquiry-oriented practical work are limitations of resources, time constraints, large classes and pressure to complete the prescribed curriculum. It is recommended that curriculum developers through the use of subject education specialist (SES), facilitate teachers’ transformation from expository to inquiry instruction. Using individual needs analysis to promote the effectiveness of foundation phase teachers in Imfolozi Circuit, KwaZulu-Natal

The purpose of the study was to investigate individual professional development needs of teachers with the aim of developing guidelines that may assist foundation phase teachers to do individual needs analysis effectively. The main research question was: Which strategies can be used to conduct individual needs analysis effectively among the foundation phase teachers in order to improve their effectiveness? The researcher was guided by the interpretive paradigm which implies that participant’s interpretations, perceptions, meanings and understandings were regarded as primary sources. The qualitative research design was used to obtain participants’ primary data. Interviews and observations were used to collect data and to maximise trustworthiness of the findings. Purposive sampling was used to select key informants who were going to provide rich information to help achieve the objectives of the study. The researcher selected the sample of 10 foundation phase teachers, 5 principals and 5 Development Support Groups attached to primary schools under Imfolozi Circuit. Data analysis was done throughout data collection through open, axial and selective coding. The hierarchical category system illustrated in schematic representation representing the main theme and subthemes was used. The findings suggest that there is a serious gap regarding how individual professional development needs and provision of professional development are concerned. The focus was more on training teachers about the new curriculum leaving behind the individual needs of each teacher. The study identified some inconsistencies and lack of uniformity in the way needs analysis was currently done in schools. The major recommendation of this study is that needs analysis should be integrated within all school activities instead of once a year. There is a need for close monitoring of teacher development in order to improve the current learner performance in schools. Locust and grasshopper outbreaks in Zululand sugarcane, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa

Thesis (MScConEcol)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of the research presented in this dissertation was to investigate localised acridid outbreaks causing damage to sugarcane in Empangeni, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. Reports of outbreaks with increasing severity have occurred for the last six or seven years, which prompted this research. In general, little is known about acridid outbreaks in sugarcane due to their sporadic nature, therefore this project set out to identify morphologically and molecularly, all species associated with Empangeni sugarcane and to determine the ecology and population dynamics of the most important species, to provide baseline data for the development of an integrated pest management (IPM) plan against these crop pests. A year-long population survey was conducted on a number of affected farms and adjacent grassland sites to determine the life cycles, population density and composition of this acridid complex on these farms. Surveys showed that this complex comprised five species: Nomadacris septemfasciata, Petamella prosternalis, Ornithacris cyanea, Cyrtacanthacris aeruginosa and Cataloipus zuluensis. Observed damage was recorded throughout the year in order to correlate with species densities. It was found that damage was closely associated with two species, namely Petamella prosternalis and Nomadacris septemfasciata, therefore these two species are of particular concern due to their higher densities and large body size resulting in them being the biggest threat to Empangeni sugarcane. All five species are univoltine but two different life cycle strategies were discovered, 3 species exhibit a winter egg diapause while 2 species exhibit a winter adult reproductive diapause, an important finding considering the knowledge intensive method of control which has been proposed. Population surveys revealed a large difference in species composition among farms (sugarcane sites) and among grassland sites. Nomadacris septemfasciata and Petamella prosternalis showed a significant preference for sugarcane while species such as Cyrtacanthacris aeruginosa, Zonocerus elegans and Orthocta sp. seemed to prefer grassland sites. Feeding potential trials were completed on the two most economically important species, Nomadacris septemfasciata and Petamella prosternalis. The results showed that Petamella prosternalis has a significantly higher feeding potential (% leaf damage) compared to Nomadacris septemfasciata even though in terms of dry weight and length, it is a smaller specimen. Feeding data were used to determine the voracity of these two species under laboratory conditions. Petamella prosternalis eats roughly 1.83 grams of fresh sugarcane per day while Nomadacris septemfasciata eats approximately 1.16 grams per day. These results were then compared to observed field damage data in order to gauge their accuracy and applicability within a field setting, which showed that although sugarcane field damage is significantly correlated with the population fluctuations of both these species, it is more closely associated with Petamella prosternalis resulting in a correlation coefficient of 0.429143 while Nomadacris septemfasciata had a correlation coefficient of 0.250. Phase polyphenism in the red locust Nomadacris septemfasciata was investigated using three methods including traditional morphometrics (Elytra/Femur (E/F) ratio), hopper colouration and eye stripe data. The E/F ratio indicated that the majority of the Empangeni population sampled is in the transiens and gregarious phase with a mean E/F ratio of 2.0063 and that they seem to be becoming more gregarious over time, with populations in 2012 having a mean E/F ratio of 1.9973 and in 2013 a mean E/F ratio of 2.01315. Hopper colouration also indicates that populations are generally showing gregarious tendencies with the majority of hoppers exhibiting gregarious type colouration. Eye stripe data showed that the majority of adult specimens observed had seven eye stripes, an indication of gregarious individuals. Geometric morphometrics, a relatively new, software based technique which has not been used in phase polyphenism studies before was used as a means to accurately measure variations among populations of N. septemfasciata by measuring the variation in forewing shape according to allocated landmarks. The resulting shape variation were compared to traditional morphometrics in an attempt to relate the two techniques so that geometric morphometrics can possibly be used as a tool to study phase polyphenism in locusts in the future. The results indicate that similarities in terms of location and gender exist between the two methods, however the exact same individuals should be used for both methods which will improve the accuracy of comparisons. This study, for the first time identified the acridid complex causing damage to Empangeni sugarcane and provided a broad summary of the potential impact the complex has on the crop as well as what may be causing them to occur in this area such as optimal habitat conditions and sugarcane as a preferable host plant being two factors which are likely to be having an influence. The findings of this study provide the baseline data needed in order to develop a more integrated and sustainable approach to controlling these acridids pests. Understanding the biology of the species enables practitioners to make more effective management decisions which is clearly needed as the current techniques being used have not solved the ‘grasshopper problem’. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van die navorsing wat in hierdie verhandeling was om ondersoek in te gelokaliseerde acridid uitbrekings veroorsaak skade aan suikerriet in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, Suid-Afrika. Die bevindinge van hierdie studie verskaf die basislyn data wat nodig is om 'n meer geïntegreerde en volhoubare benadering tot die beheer van hulle as die begrip van die biologie van die spesie in staat stel om praktisyns meer effektiewe bestuur besluite wat duidelik nodig is as 'n die huidige tegnieke gebruik moet maak om te ontwikkel nie opgelos die "sprinkaan probleem".

The local global nexus : a case study of Richards Bay.

South Africa's past industrial decentralisation policies have come under intense criticism for being economically inefficient and an inappropriate means of providing employment. The result of state intervention from the 1970s in the locality of Richards Bay/Empangeni, has led to the establishment of many unlinked, globally competing industries in the area, which the local economy has come to rely heavily upon. Public as well as private organisations of the area have in place many social upliftment initiatives developed in response to the high poverty and unemployment in the area. By employing survey research techniques to collect the necessary data, this research study undertakes a social scientific approach to analysing the socio·economic impact that these industries and large firms have had on the area and documents the current social investment initiatives they have in place. Local Economic Development (LED) initiatives, as a pro-poor response to community upliftment, are firmly placed in the local municipality's LED strategy, and from which, the area now receives considerable benefit. Results show that there is a positive public·private partnership approach to local development in the area with all sectors being actively involved in community benefit and poverty alleviation initiatives. / Thesis (M.A)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2003.
