According to the Instructions for the Preparation of Graduate Theses, the abstract by definition "... is a summary or condensation of the thesis; it states the problem, the methods of investigation followed, and the general conclusions.” The purpose of this thesis is to determine the nature of the Roman Imperial Cult as it developed in the West from the time of its inception to A.D. 14, the year of Augustus' death. The method of investigation has been to examine the epigraphic, archaeological, numismatic and literary evidence. This thesis has explored the Historiography on William Hohenzollern from the viewpoint of eminent American, British and German historians. Specific phases or incidents have been taken out of William's life and have been analyzed with respect to the historian's viewpoint. Particular attention is paid to William's personality as seen by his biographers and the reasons for each biographer's study of William is explored.

Thesis advisor: Robin Fleming / The cult of the saints and emperor cult both fulfilled similar roles in their respective societies. On the surface they appear to be drastically different institutions. In reality emperor cult and saint cult were similar religious programs, which with careful examination appear to be related. The following work discusses the remarkable similarities between the cult of saints and emperor cult, including their personnel, temples, means of establishment and promotion, and even the role each cult played in the development of their societies. After careful examination of the above mentioned subjects, it is clear that the cult of the saints was largely based on emperor cult, and that despite the drastically different religious atmospheres that each cult was based in, they were similar in all but the most obvious wasy. / Thesis (MA) — Boston College, 2008. / Submitted to: Boston College.
