Previous issue date: 2015-02-13 / FAPEAM - Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Amazonas / This paper seeks to understand the rural territorialities in the municipality Parintins and its
relationship with socio-environmental sustainability, based on the analysis of the process of
circularity of the culture, habitus, and the environmental ethos in Zé Açu. The concepts of
territory, territoriality and place were the theoretical reference to understand the relationship
that exists between society, environment and culture and its connection to sustainability in its
several dimensions. The research is characterized as quali-quantitative, using both
quantitative and qualitative data (triangulation). This is because in studies on socioenvironmental
issues, especially when the subject-environment relationship is involved, the
joining of distinct areas of knowledge is necessary as, therefore, is the use of different
methods that allow for a more wide-ranging comprehension of the reality. Data collection
techniques used include a survey given via forms, participant observation, individual and
collective (focus group) interviews with tabulation and processing done using statistical
programs (SPSS and Excel), for the quantitative data and discourse analysis for qualitative
data. Data was presented using tables, charts, graphs, maps and dense description of the
analytical-reflexive character resulting from participant observation and interviews. It is
through agriculture and fishing that traditional knowledge is passed on, where the land and the
water become the locus of the reproduction of the life of the families living along the
riverbanks of Zé Açu. Likewise, religious rites and folkloric festivals help to maintain their
social, cultural and territorial structure. The main environmental problems in the area of study
are: lake aggradation, deforestation for livestock farming, mining and increased production of
solid waste that is improperly discarded. Environmental agencies and research institutes have
little presence in order to avoid/mitigate these problems that already affect the ways of life of
the people dwelling along the rivers. The main community of Zé Açu, Bom Socorro, has been
found to be undergoing a process of changes to its spatial and socio-cultural structure;
however, these changes, which occur in rural areas, are inherent to the arrival of aspects of
modern life that bring contact with other references closer. This does in fact result in
transformations; nevertheless, it does not mean the end of certain ways of life, but rather that
they take on new meanings, now based on other values and social practices that will always
be dynamic. The understanding of the relationship of the territory with culture as presented
here can help in reflections on the strategies used by these groups to better control and order
their territories, as well as in conserving natural resources so as to guarantee the balance
between the ecosystems and the subjects that use them, thus maintaining the habitus and
environmental ethos of the riverbank dwellers of Zé Açu. After all, this is the basic
presupposition of sustainability in its social, economic, cultural and environmental dimension.
A pesquisa

Previous issue date: 2009-07-15 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The complexity of the individual-environment relation has brought about uneasiness and a search for strategies in order to minimize or avoid the negative impact of human actions upon
the environment. The quest for some understanding on this complexity makes it possible to widen knowledge upon these two facts, stimulating the discussion about a proposition that
one will be able to establish healthier and less aggressive ways of living as far as environmental issues are concerned based on environmental-related conceptions and their effects upon the environment .Therefore, it all starting out from a conception that environmental commitment demands engagement, be it in the production of such knowledge or in the rational use of the natural resources. That information is relatively available does not mean that people in general may feel compelled to making use of it or applying it. It is understood that the problem behind environmental issues is complex and interdependent on
the social problematic issues arising from population growth, poor income division, allocation of people in big city centers being the spaces smaller and smaller and social inequity larger
and larger each day. The various technical-scientific transformations have triggered ecological unbalances and a progressive deterioration on both single and collective ways of living. These changes and the population growth have led to changes in the way people feel or perceive reality. The objective of this study was to analyze people´s environmental forms of commitment at moments of vulnerability and, how these constitute the socio environmental ethos of this population. The issues on vulnerability to which the poorer classes are exposed have represented a challenge in the search for strategies after risk reduction and applicable ways that people can actively develop. The methodological strategy adopted was of a filed research of the descriptive exploratory qualitative type, carried out in an urbanized city zone
in the vicinities of the Ouro Verde residential area, Coroado III, Zona Leste in Manaus. The environment is muddy, located in a flooding area and several water streams run across it and
wind up in a creek that gets polluted with tossed waste and trash, causing major environmental problems and bringing about a great deal of difficulty to the dwellers. The techniques for the collection of information were the participative observation and semistructured interview, being Content the method of the analysis. A set of ethical phenomena was identified in the current study in order to justify the proposed commitment and three categories emerged from the socio-environmental reality were named after active passivity ; supportive passivity and controlled passivity , which, after all constitute the socioenvironmental ethos built by this population and browses through the environmental-related issues, their understanding and engagement. The questions arisen do not only contribute to the discussion of these people´s engagement to sharing the possibilities of facing their own problematic, but also to giving greater visibility on this process so there can be more effective
and efficient interventions.

Dorothy Wordsworth's Distinctive VoiceLiebel, Caroline Jean 29 June 2021 (has links)
The following study is interested in Dorothy Wordsworth's formation of her unique authorial identity and environmental ethos. I attend to her poetry and prose, specifically her journals written at Grasmere and her Recollections of a Tour Made in Scotland (1874) to demonstrate how she shaped her individual voice while navigating her occasionally conflicting roles of sister and writer. My project begins with a chapter providing a selective biographical and critical history of Dorothy Wordsworth and details how my work emerges from current trends in scholarship and continues an ongoing critical conversation about Dorothy Wordsworth's agency and originality. In my analysis of Dorothy's distinct poetic voice, I compare selections of her writing with William's to demonstrate how Dorothy expressed her perspectives regarding nature, community, and her place within her environment. In my chapter on Recollections of a Tour Made in Scotland, I analyze the ways in which Dorothy's narrative embraces the tenets of the picturesque while simultaneously acknowledging the tradition's limitations. Her environmental perspective was inherently rooted in domesticity; the idea of home and her community connections influenced how she engaged with and then recorded the environments she traveled to and the people she met. My project concludes by demonstrating how Dorothy Wordsworth's environmental ethos relates to the values promoted by modern environmental writers. Dorothy was intimately connected to her home and environment and modern environmental protection and conservation efforts encourage human connection to home and place. I consider how modern environmentalist movements could benefit from embodying the empathy that Dorothy showed for the natural world in their practices today. / Master of Arts / My thesis argues that while Dorothy Wordsworth was intrinsically involved in her brother William's poetic process, she actively created a unique writerly identity that can be detected throughout her journals and poems. My project begins with a chapter detailing how my work emerges from current trends in Dorothy Wordsworth scholarship, including feminist and ecocritical studies. In my analysis of Dorothy's individual poetic voice, I suggest that through her distinctive style and her mingling of poetry and prose, Dorothy was strongly asserting herself and her perspectives even when they conflicted with William's. Dorothy's Recollections of a Tour Made in Scotland exemplifies her unique environmental perspective, which was influenced by her community-centered identity; this contributes to what she chooses to recollect in her journal.
