Student Number : 0110471A - MSc research report - School of Civil and Environmental Engineering - Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment / Having followed various different approaches in environmental management capacity building for a number of years, the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) achieved various degrees of success. The increased importance of environmental management at local government level required a more consistent approach from the DBSA in order to improve delivery. This necessitated the identification of success criteria that the DBSA could implement to guide this improvement. In order to identify these criteria, the following main aspects were researched: The environmental mandate and capacity of local government in South Africa, the international perspective on capacity building, the DBSA’s mandate on capacity building and lastly the outcomes of four environmental capacity building projects implemented by the DBSA. The criteria identified focussed on two main areas, namely project management and environmental management. Furthermore, various steps were identified that the DBSA needs to take with relation to its own project cycle that might lead to improvements in this regard.

<p>Today many companies and municipalities requires that their suppliers should have an environmental management system to work by. This might be one of the reasons to the increasing number of companies that today are implementing environmental management systems. Care of Haus is one of the companies that thinks that the benefits are bigger than the disadvantages, when it comes to environmental management systems, therefore they have made the choice to work with ISO 14001.</p><p>The ISO 14001 standard is deified on the PDCA- cycle. PDCA stands for Plan, do check and act. Care of Haus choose to work with the ISO 14001 standard since it is a well-known standard for the companies that’s Care of Haus collaborates with and it is also well-known within their clientele</p><p>Within this report an environmental investigation has been made. Care of Haus consumption of water, energy, transportation etc. have been measured and analysed. An investigation concerning whether Care of Haus reaches the demands set by the ISO 14001 standard, and an environmental policy was also made. The results are that Care of Haus has transportation and energy consumption as their biggest environmental aspects. When working towards “constant improvement” ISO 14001 catchphrase, the environmental aspects should improve.</p> / <p>Allt fler företag och kommuner ställer krav på sina leverantörer att de ska vara miljöcertifierade eller åtminstone arbeta enligt ett miljöledningssystem. This thesis deals with the introduction of integrate management system. Spe-cifically, the introduction of quality management and environmental management systems. The practical part includes a review of the current status of compliance with the requirements of standards ISO 9001/2009 and ISO 14001/2005, a registry of legal requirements, identifying environmental aspects and their evaluation in terms of significance and identification of emergency danger situation.
