The Transfer of Phenomenological Diction in "The Other Side of Silence" by Craig Irvine

Abstract This paper investigates the difficulties to translate a text containing phenomenological diction from English to Swedish. The source text comes from a journal that deals with medical motifs from a literary perspective called Literature and Medicine. The source text is an article called “The Other Side of Silence: Levinas, Medicine, and Literature” (2005) and was written by Craig Irvine. The translation difficulties have involved different aspects of phenomenology’s way with words. This analysis shows how these problems were dealt with by studying philosophical theories of translation, notably Philip Lewis’s model of abusive fidelity. These theories are presented by Jeremy Munday in Introducing Translation Studies (2008). The main problem with phenomenological diction is to choose the equivalent target language word or phrase in cases where there is no recognizable word or phrase in a dictionary. Here, several aspects like concrete or abstract and active or passive had to be considered in order to transfer the abuse that is present in the original correctly (Lewis). This aim was reached by using parallel texts and reasoning in accordance with theory. Thesauruses were also used, as well as dictionaries in cases where it was possible.   Key words: phenomenology, Levinas, experimental translation, the same, the other.

[pt] Debruçando-se especificamente sobre o poema (yùjiēyuàn) – degraus da escada de jade, em tradução de Haroldo de Campos – do poeta clássico chinês Li Bai (701-762), esta pesquisa, inserindo-se no campo dos estudos da tradução, constrói-se por duas vias interligadas: primeiramente, realizo uma análise do poema chinês, cruzando-a com leituras propostas por António Graça de Abreu (s/d), Cristiano Mahaut de Barros Barreto (2011) e Ricardo Primo Portugal e Tan Xiao (2019), para, em seguida, contrastá-la com minhas leituras de um conjunto de traduções do poema para o inglês e o português – sob o marco daquelas feitas por Ezra Pound e Haroldo de Campos –, mirando o exame crítico das diversas escolhas tradutórias em jogo. Na segunda parte, buscando alicerce na exploração do silêncio que depreendo no texto original, realizo eu mesmo exercícios de tradução experimental, justificando minhas escolhas de acordo com as características identificadas e priorizadas na primeira parte do trabalho. A pesquisa reflete sobre caminhos contemporâneos da experimentação na tradução, com ênfase na poesia clássica chinesa, em especial do estilo conciso chamado (juéjù). / [en] Focusing specifically on the poem (yùjiēyuàn) – The Jewel Stairs Grievance, translated by Ezra Pound – by the classical Chinese poet Li Bai (701- 762), this research, situated within the field of translation studies, unfolds through two interconnected avenues: first, I conduct an analysis of the Chinese poem, drawing on interpretations proposed by António Graça de Abreu (n.d.), Cristiano Mahaut de Barros Barreto (2011), and Ricardo Primo Portugal and Tan Xiao (2019), and then contrast them with my readings of a set of translations of the poem into English and Portuguese – particularly focusing on those by Ezra Pound and Haroldo de Campos – aiming at a critical examination of the various translation choices at play. In the second part, grounded in an exploration of the silence I infer from the original text, I engage in experimental translation exercises, justifying my choices according to the identified and prioritized characteristics in the first part of the study. The research reflects on contemporary paths of experimentation in translation, with a focus on classical Chinese poetry, especially the concise style known as (juéjù).
