Choice and inevitability in modelling an organization's future : how management, depending on the company's organizational context, can shape an organization's future with the use of choice and/or the reliance on determinism

Tumidei, Daniele January 2016 (has links)
The literature presents us with two distinct, and at times opposed, approaches to strategic management: the use of strategic choice and determinism. This research shows that these approaches can actually be considered as two distinct variables, which create a space or framework in which it is possible to identify, according to the available different amounts of strategic choice and determinism, the four different ontological perspectives of determinism, hard incompatibilism, libertarianism and compatibilism. According to the literature, within each ontological perspective of the strategic choice/determinism framework, companies use different levels of strategic choice and determinism to produce organizational outcomes. This research provides empirical evidence of the real life existence of these ontological perspectives, in which companies’ performance of revenues is driven by a different amount of strategic choice or determinism according to the perspectives in which companies operate. This research also shows that other important performance indicators, such as EBITDA, depend only on deterministic variables, while ROA depends neither on strategic choice nor on deterministic variables. These findings suggest that future research could increase our knowledge on the internal environment of companies, as it could do from the hard incompatibilist perspective, which was not possible to study thoroughly within this research. The research conclusions provide several contributions to both academic knowledge and practice.

Big Data: A Toll for all Strategic Decisions : A Study of Three Large Food and Beverage Processing Organizations

Arsenovic, Jasenko January 2015 (has links)
I will look at what impact big data have had on the managerial strategic decisions in the food and beverage industry. This in order to understand the complexity and theory of organizational strategic management, an effort to define the contemporary strategic theory into a holistic conceptual model is done through a literature review on organizational strategy. This literature explicitly proposes four distinctly different types of strategies that management need to consider in the organizational context. Namely, long-term strategy, internal business strategy, external corporate strategy, and competitive strategy. The study analyzed the food and beverage industry over a decade (2005-2014), where the three of the largest actors in the industry were selected, Nestlé S.A, PepsiCo Inc, and Unilever. The choice of method was content analysis, where three structured categorization matrixes were developed which each analyzed parts of the annual reports. The study propose the role of big data as a strategic tool for managerial decision from a theoretical standpoint. The content analysis show that hypothesis 1, could be confirmed, big data have an impact on all the proposed four managerial strategic decisions. Second hypothesis could not be confirmed, since decentralization does only occur for one of the organizations, but increased external environment turbulence could be concluded for the industry in general. The third hypothesis could be confirmed, which show that there is an increase in individualization due to increased customer involvement and demand. The analysis discovered three distinct time periods during the last decade, namely pre- economic instability period (2005-2007), economic instability period (2008-2011) and finally the post-paradigm period (2012-2014). Where the year 2011 was the most turbulent in terms of economy and technology for the industry. The study clearly show that customers are now involved in the production process, customers are co-creators of the products. There is now a two-way communication and increased social responsibility awareness. This study shows that the old traditional approach of looking at markets in order to position yourself to stay competitive are obsolete as this study predicted. customers demand to be a part of the organizational culture. This conclude that big data is an important tool for all strategic managerial decisions.

Ympäristötekijöiden vaikutus tietojärjestelmien hankintaan, käyttöönottoon ja käyttöön koulutus- ja tutkimusorganisaatiossa

Stranius, K. (Kalervo) 30 April 2019 (has links)
Abstract The object of this research was to analyze external and internal environments of information systems and to find factors that influence the acquisition, provisioning and utilization of information systems, and to identify the effects. The research object was to identify relations between the environmental factors’ impacts and information systems in an education and research organization. The empirical research was executed at the University of Oulu. In this research the qualitative method was utilized. The research data was gathered through interviewing the personnel of the university, altogether 35 persons, standing for four groups: administration, education and research, services and information system support. At first the environmental factors influencing on the information systems were identified and analyzed from related studies. Their impacts on an education and research organization’s information systems’ acquisition, provisioning and use were then empirically analyzed. The impacts of generic environmental factors, regulation factors, financial factors and internal environmental factors were evaluated. The internal environment’s factors had relatively intensive and plentiful influence, because also external factors influenced trough the internal environment. This research gives a rigorous conceptual view to information systems’ environmental factors and their impacts in an education and research organizations and provides perspectives to additional studies, too.
