Project factors - A possible way to create a data bank of project experience.

Eidegård, Anna January 2007 (has links)
In this master thesis I investigate how to make projects more efficient. I did my thesis at the airborne radar division at Ericsson Microwave Systems (EMW). Their projects often cost more than estimated and they also tend to last longer than estimated. The airborne radar division wants to know why the final result, in most cases exceed the budget and time plan. Their goal is to learn from the experience in previous projects and to gather all that experience in an experience base. They gave me the task to start the process towards an experience base. The theory I base my result and conclusions on is The Experience Factory. The Experience Factory is an example of an experience base that was developed primarily for software projects. I started investigating projects at the airborne radar division trying to find common denominators (factors). I found some factors that I believe have a major impact on the projects. The projects really have to rely on these factors to be able to reach the goal of the projects. These factors are the first step towards an experience base. Starting a process towards an experience base is a work that takes many years especially at a company of this size. My thesis is a start towards the goal and in my result I present the factors I found and in the conclusions I give suggestions for the continuing work towards an experience base.

Assim, este início de século aponta que os rumos da Ciência e da Tecnologia (C&T) podem estar ligados a um desenvolvimento efetivamente sustentável / Abstract: The city of São Paulo Bocaina, located in the center of the state, has in the dyeing and finishing of leather its main activity - as well as many small and medium sized municipalities - and can be considered a clear example of the conflict between economic development and environmental preservation. Known nationally as the "capital of glove scrapes", the locale faced between the 1970s and 2000's unbridled growth coureira activity, which remains in the region for nearly fifty years. From the last decade (2000s) the practices of technological innovation resulted in resizing the environmental issue. The case study in the industries of dyeing and finishing of leather (tanning) of the municipality of Bocaina-SP tried to verify how innovative practices in the local context incorporate environmental variables. The aim was to diagnose whether the new techniques and technologies adopted by tanneries in the region have contributed to the reduction of environmental impacts caused as a result of the activity coureira, and innovative new practices have indicated a model for sustainable local development. A productive branch historically marked by contamination to the natural environment and human health, as the leather sector may redefine its direction and build more sustainable patterns of production. The participation of social groups involved with it, as entrepreneurs, local people directly involved, the social and union movements of an environmental nature and instances of public power have redefined public policy and business management for the improvement of environmental conditions. So, early this century shows that the directions of Science and Technology (S & T) may be linked to a sustainable development effectively / Mestrado / Politica Cientifica e Tecnologica / Mestre em Política Científica e Tecnológica

The Dance Factory, Newtown, Johannesburg a site of resistance

Ginslov, Jeannette January 1998 (has links)
This mini thesis proposes that the Dance Factory in Ne'Ntown, Johannesburg, is a site of resistance. Its source and motivation are the personal, artistic and socio-poIiticaI sites ofresistance to mainstream forms of dance with nationalistic tendencies and to dominant ideological hegemonies that enforced apartheid or nationalism. Therefore, these sites or resistance are examined prior to and after the democratisation of South African culture. An analysis of the dances choreographed in this period of transition and changing hegemonies reveal shifts of resistance. These are traced within the development of the Dance Factory. Chapter one explores the notion of resistance as a form of power and the notion of site, where the operations of power evoke resistance. Three sites of resistance within South African dance culture are identified and examined. These are the Dance Factory, the artistic site of dance and the site of the dancing body. The chapter reveals the development of these sites in a changed culture and notes a re-orientation of resistance within dance, namely Afro-fusion, and the subsequent development and emergence of 'alternative' sites of resistance. These reveal new expressionistic tendencies, body politics and the feminist strategies of 'new poetics' and 'ecriture feminine'. The codified mainstream forms of dance, subject to nationalistic strategies of dassicism and its inherent Iogocentricity are challenged and destabilised by the emergence of these altemative resistant forms of dance. Chapter two examines the artistic policies of the Nationalist Govemment, the African National Congress and the Dance Factory from 1983-1997. It notes the effects of the changes in the artistic policies on sites of resistance in dance, performed at the Dance Factory. The chapter desaibes the development of the Dance Factory, its policies of diversification as a strategy of resistance, its promotion of praxis, its resistance to nationalism and the ramifications thereof. It also explores the effects of a governmentalisation of culture and the role of the organic intellectual within the Dance Factory. An analysis of the alternative dance work 'Torso-Tongue" in chapter three furthers the argument that the Dance Factory maintains and encourages the changing sites of resistance in dance. This analysis demonstrates the resistant aspects of dance as discussed in chapter one and thereby confirms the aims and missions of the Dance Factory. The thesis examines the role of the Dance Factory as it develops, nurtures and responds to the shifts in resistance and changes in culture and dance. Most importantly the thesis exposes the resistance to and the effects of an imposition of a nationalistic ideology on dance. The resultant resistance to this form of domination is explored in dance within the site of the Dance Factory, thus supporting the premise that the Dance Factory is a site of resistance.

Application of process synthesis for the recovery of valuable chemicals from an industrial waste stream

Molote, Moratwe January 2018 (has links)
MSc Thesis / A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Science in Engineering to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2018 / This work aims at designing and simulating on Aspen Plus process simulator a process that can recover valuable chemicals from a High Organic Waste (HOW) stream produced at Sasol Secunda plant, South Africa. The waste is made up of low boiling point organic components such as pyridine, acetonitrile and Methyl Ethyl Ketone and water. Currently, the waste is incinerated without energy recovery. This practice serves to exacerbate the already high greenhouse gases emissions from the plant, but more importantly, it results in the missed opportunity to maximize revenues through resale of recycled valuable chemicals. The recovery of valuable chemicals from the HOW is made difficult by the formations of azeotrope between organic components and water; at least 6 azeotropes exist in the HOW stream. In this work the emphasis is on pyridine because of its established market value and demand. Pyridine market size is about 400 million USD in 2017 and is expected to increase to over 600 million USD by 2021 mainly due to increased usage in the agrochemical industry. Water integration strategy was also assessed demand because of the reported need to improve water utilization efficiency at Sasol Secunda plant. The recovery was achieved in 2 separate steps: 1) water-pyridine mixture was separated from the rest of the HOW stream using fractional distillation and 2) pyridine enrichment section which was designed using thermodynamic tools such as residue curve maps and isovolatility curves. The rest of the HOW stream (light fractions) was sent to the currently used incinerator. Liquid-liquid extraction and azeotropic distillation were considered for the pyridine enrichment step. Results showed that the combination of liquid-liquid extraction and distillation offered the benefit of a lower entrainer to azeotropic mixture ratio (EA) compared to azeotropic distillation. This gave the lowest recorded EA at 0.320:1. The comparison between the proposed process and the incineration of the whole HOW stream showed that the implementation of the process proposed reduced the incineration load by 60wt% and CO and CO2 emissions by 50%. Dividing Wall column process integration technique was implemented to reduce the number of distillation columns in the proposed process and 10% reduction in the reboiler and condenser duties was observed. Implementation of DWC further improved the purity of the recovered pyridine from 96mol% to over 99.9mol%. Preliminary economic evaluation carried out on Aspen Plus showed that the proposed recovery process was profitable with an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 20% and a payback period of 4.5 years. / MT 2018

Visual Assembly

Heslyk, Oskar January 2021 (has links)
The project investigates an aesthetic of assembly. It established a visual expression though exploring the relationship between disassembly and assembly in the context of laminated timbers. These explorations are manifested in a learning institution in relationship to an existing CLT factor in Långshyttan. The project becomes a dynamic celebration of assembly and a continuous learning environment as the building continues to disassemble and reassemble to counter the obsolescent of new technological inventions in a rapidly developing industry driven by industrialization and technological determination.  The new building feeds of the factory for purely disassembled parts in terms of discarded waste and a pure form of assembly in terms of unprocessed CLT blanks. The production of industrial produced mass timber elements has further moved the production of buildings into factories and the erection of buildings at site consist primarily of an assembly of  predesigned parts. Architectural advancements is inseparable from technological paradigms and the production of construction timber should carry with it new architectural expressions.
