It aims to explain the formation of this historic process, explaining its fundamental connections. This is a literature search, in which emphasis is the categories of modernization, individualization, family and media, symbolically represented by television, considered the contribution from a historical and social. It is concluded that the process of privatization of the social spheres is a constitutive aspect of modern society in their movement for the consolidation and expansion. In that case, the family is a significant emblem to form the headquarters of the private world. The privatization of the family provides the necessary openness for the accommodation of the media of mass inside, especially for television, which allows an even greater emphasize that privatization, constitutive element of capitalist development / Este trabalho vincula-se à linha de pesquisa Cultura e Processos Educacionais e possui como objeto de estudo a reciprocidade constitutiva da modernização, individualização e privatização das esferas da sociabilidade. Tem como finalidade expor a constituição histórica desse processo, explicitando seus nexos fundamentais. Trata-se de uma pesquisa bibliográfica, na qual privilegiou-se as categorias de modernização, individualização, família e meios de comunicação, emblematicamente representado pela televisão, considerados a partir de um aporte histórico e social. Conclui-se que o processo de privatização das esferas sociais é um aspecto constitutivo da sociedade moderna em seus movimentos de consolidação e expansão. Nesse processo, a família representa um emblema significativo por constituir a sede do mundo privado. A privatização da família fornece a abertura necessária ao alojamento dos meios de comunicação de massa em seu interior, especialmente para a televisão, o que possibilita um acirramento ainda maior dessa privatização, elemento essencial no desenvolvimento do mundo capitalista
