Creative maps for training systemic psychotherapists

Nel, Pieter Willem 08 1900 (has links)
In this study psychotherapy training is described from a new epistemological perspective. This perspective, based upon new science and physics and Batesonian evolution, embodies elements of holism, reciprocity, circularity and a both/and view of the universe. From a new epistemological perspective understandings of psychotherapy training are constructed, not discovered. By precluding the notion of absolute truth, an infinite variety of alternative constructions of training becomes possible. The conceptual map constructed in this study incorporates a process model for the training of systemic psychotherapists. In terms of this model, training should be a context where various orders of learning are encountered by student and trainer. In particular, the trainees must learn how to differentiate from each other and how to separate from the trainer. Three evolutionary stages of training are identified to describe how an emancipatory learning context may be created. It is suggested that training may never be concluded. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

A pilot study into the functioning of families with a member who is a hospice patient to determine whether hospice families require family therapy

Evans, Alison January 1993 (has links)
The aim of this pilot study, which was carried out under the auspices of the Grahamstown Hospice, is to evaluate the functioning of families with a terminally ill member, in order to establish whether these families require family therapy. The Family Assessment Device (FAD), based on the McMaster Model of Family Functioning, was used. Data from 20 families was analysed and the extent to which these families constitute a clinical sample is highlighted. In terms of the dimension of General Functioning, 15 families emerged as functioning at a problematic level. Communication emerged as the most dysfunctional of the seven dimensions of the FAD, with 17 families functioning at a problematic level. As a result of these findings it is argued that family therapy should be incorporated into the range of services offered by hospices. Limitations of this study and directions for future research are also discussed.

Gesinsterapie en die opvoedkundig-sielkundige hulpverlening aan kinders met Tourette-sindroom

Bannister, Marinda 23 July 2014 (has links)
M.Ed. (Educational Psychology) / The purpose of this study was to determine if family therapy has potential in handling the behaviour problems of children with Tourette syndrome. This study was approached within a system theoretical framework and from an educational psychological perspective. The study was presented as follows: Chapter 1: Conceptualization, formulation of the problem and objectives. Chapter 2: A literature study regarding the spectrum of Tourette syndrome. Chapter 3: A literature study regarding the systemic approach on family therapy. Chapter 4: The methodology used in the study. Chapter 5: A qualitative-idiographic evaluation of the study. Chapter 6: Summary, conclusions and recommendations. Findings: Family therapy has potential for the successful treatment of the behavioral problems of children with Tourette syndrome. Conclusions: According to the literature study and the findings of this research, the behavior problems of children with Tourette syndrome can be treated successfully with family therapy. Family interactions as a whole show improvement, which in tum leads to the better handling of behavioral problems. These findings may be attributed to the small number of families involved in the study - thus more research in this field is needed.

A critical appraisal of the work of Mara Selvini Palazzoli

Marchetti, Maria Chiara 13 February 2014 (has links)
D. Litt et Phil. (Psychology) / The need was identified to place the work of Mara Selvini PalazzoIi (PalazzoIi) within a specific socio-political and theoretical context in order to be able to appraise her contributions to the field of family therapy. Therefore the first part of this thesis examines the Italian context within which Palazzoli's work has evolved, with specific emphasis on certain social and political changes which have taken place in the past twenty five years. These transformations also led to a new mental health legislation (Law 180 of 1978) which saw the closing down of psychiatric institutions and in turn greatly encouraged the development of family therapy. A close analysis of Law 180 is provided with specific criticism from a systemic perspective. The nature of the Italian families with which PalazzoIi has worked is also briefly examined. Certain theoretical influences have also played an important part in the development of her work from psychoanalysis to systems theory, and lastly to complexity. These are examined, although the emphasis falls on the work of the Frenchman Edgar Morin with regard to complexity, because of the epistemological value it has for PalazzoIi's latest work. This historical development of Palazzoli's work is examined in great detail within a "complex dialectical" framework which focuses on how knowledge develops and how contradictions are often present in this process. Her psychoanalytical work is seen as the thesis of this dialectical process, moving to its antithesis, namely systems theory and, lastly the synthesis found in a model of family games. This process seems to be evolving once again and a new thesis is identified in the most recent therapeutic and theoretical developments. Attention is also given to the work carried out by PalazzoIi in larger organizations as it shows how family therapy principles can be adapted to other than therapeutic contexts. Having created this contextual framework for a critical appraisal the last chapter examines Palazzoli's work in terms of so-called "internal" and "external" factors in an attempt to identify the significance of her work for the theory and practice of family therapy. Some recommendations for future research arising from this study are given at the end of the thesis.
