An Investigation of Fatal Attractions in Careers

Fatal attraction is defined as those qualities which initially attract, but are later deemed unattractive and repellent. Fatal attraction has been predominantly examined and supported to exist in the area of romantic relationships. The current study extended a theory of love and applied this idea to work, and represents the first application of this concept in relation to careers. In Study 1, the fatal matches between attractive and unattractive qualities of jobs (e.g. ‘challenging’ fatally matched with ‘stressful’) were obtained. Study 2 asked 110 participants who had either left a job or were contemplating leaving it to complete a questionnaire in which they nominated attractive and unattractive qualities of the job. Study 1’s matches were used to examine whether fatal attraction to careers occurred. The results supported the existence of fatal attraction to jobs. Fatal attraction was found to vary significantly with occupation and the nature of the attractive quality sought in a job. These findings add to both the understanding of career and job decision processes; and the knowledge of fatal attraction as a construct. Further exploration is encouraged due to the relevance for both organisations and individuals.

Hurting the Ones They Love: Character Analysis and Original Screenplay Crimes of Passion

The thesis is a ten-page analysis on two films, Fatal Attraction and Lakeview Terrace. The thesis begins with a brief introduction to the horror genre and its subgenre in which the two films and original screenplay are categorized, psychological horror. It covers all the important elements of a film and screenplay: conflict, arc, goal, structure and plot. The thesis also consists of feminists’ reactions to Fatal Attraction, and examines whether the original 60- page screenplay helps or worsens the image of women. The screenplay also raises the question if having the villains need to be insane to prove a point. Further in the thesis is a description of the original screenplay Crimes of Passion and its main characters Jennifer, Alex and Keith. Jennifer, the heroine, becomes the target of scorned lover and police officer Keith. Alex, Keith’s rival, must protect Jennifer. The analysis ends with the restated questions the audience must have in mind and answer while reading the screenplay.

A NON-MARITAL, ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP DISSOLUTION STUDY

The present study examines three non-marital, romantic relationship dissolution types: (1) normal dyadic dissolution, (2) fatal attraction dissolution, and (3) social allergen dissolution among a sample of 321 emerging adults, who are between ages eighteen and twenty-nine. Results of an online survey revealed that normal dyadic dissolution occurred in 62%, social allergen dissolution occurred in 27%, and fatal attraction dissolution occurred in 11% of the participants’ relational demises. Results also revealed that there is a surprising amount of overlap between the three dissolution types, and that age is not specifically correlated with a particular dissolution type. However, there are two predicators of dissolution type within an emerging adult population: perceived family support and whether or not the couple cohabitate.
