CONFINED SPACE FATALITIES

MACCARRON, Ciaran, ciaran.maccarron@watercorporation.com.au January 2006 (has links)
The extent of work related fatal accidents has been analysed statistically by agencies throughout the world. As a result of this analysis there is a wealth of information available categorised by industry types, sub-industry, occupation, sex, age, nature of occurrence, bodily location, agency of occurrence and mechanism of injury. It is however extremely difficult to identify information pertaining to confined space fatalities such as contributory factors, mechanisms of injury and other data of an epidemiological nature.

Trends in Occupational Fatalities and Industry Growth for Construction Industry in the United States

Dogan, Yildirim 2010 May 1900 (has links)
The construction industry is one of the largest industries in the United States and in the world. The U.S. construction industry accounted for 4.5% of the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2006, and 8% of the workforce. Thus, the relationship between GDP, population, and construction volume could show an impact on the number of construction fatalities. The results of this study showed that an increase in GDP is an indicator of an increase in construction volume as well as an increase in population at the state level. The study also shows that an increase in these variables has led to an increase in construction related work fatalities. The relationship between these four variables and union membership (approximated by each state's right to work laws) was also investigated. It is concluded that population is a strong predictor of fatalities. Statistically the union states have a lower fatality rate than non-union (right to work) states.

A 10-year retrospective review on mob justice fatalities examined at the Germiston Forensic Pathology Medico-legal Service

Medar, Sajida January 2018 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Medicine (MMed), Johannesburg, 2018 / Mob justice fatalities are a gross violation of human rights in that they represent extra-legal punishment. There is a paucity of research relating to the demographics of at-risk groups, nature of injuries and the impact to the Forensic Pathology Service (FPS). This was a retrospective study over 10 years at Germiston Forensic Pathology medico-legal service. The objectives were to describe the demographics of the deceased, identify the profile of at-risk groups, describe the trends of the number of fatalities and causes of death over time, assess hospitalisation frequency, describe the nature and location of injuries sustained, and to report on ancillary investigations performed. Data was collected from the South African Police Service (SAPS) 180 scene investigation record form, hospital notes, final post mortem report, Notification of death (BI1663) form and additional statements. 354 cases were analysed. There was no clear trend in the number of mob justice fatalities. Six areas were highlighted to have a higher incidence of mob justice fatalities. The at-risk population was young to middleaged black South African males. The majority of deaths were due to blunt force head injury, and were so severe that most deaths occurred within 24 hours of injury. A standardised operating procedure should be developed for uniformity in managing mob justice cases. Adequate resources should be distributed to appropriate departments to enable a reasonable turnaround time of ancillary investigations and high incidence areas should receive sufficient and appropriately skilled resources to engage with and monitor the respective communities to curb these killings. / XL2019

Analysis of Deaths Caused by Interplate and Intraplate Earthquakes

Jogunoori, Pushkin 2011 May 1900 (has links)
Two kinds of earthquakes, interplate and intraplate, occur in the world. Interplate earthquakes occur at the plate boundaries and are common. Intraplate earthquakes occur within the stable continental land mass and are less common. Fatality models have been developed by a number of different research groups in the last decades to estimate losses in these types of events. This is a relatively new research area, with the added problem that a fatal event only occurs every fortnight or so, so that the data collection process is long term. This research study has two objectives; the first is to update the Generalized Poissonian distribution parameters for the period 2000 to 2009. The second is to establish the statistical properties of the set of fatal earthquakes for the world, for the interplate region, and intraplate region in the last decade and for the twentieth century. This work has not been previously completed and represents a potential insight into the cost effectiveness of current earthquake mitigation schemes. The key hypothesis is that fatal interplate earthquakes occur at a higher rate than fatal intraplate events. The results of the two analyses show that there is an increase in the average number of earthquakes and the average number of deaths caused by these earthquakes for this decade, indicating this decade has proved to be worse when compared to the earlier recorded earthquake period data. There was a total of 202 recorded fatal events in the period of 2000 to 2009. The interplate earthquakes proved to cause more fatalities compared to intraplate earthquakes during the past decade. The difference at the five percent confidence level is significant.
