Flexural behaviour of ferrocement

Alwash, Abdul Salam A. January 1982 (has links)
Ferrocement is often believed to be a form of reinforced concrete. However, in spite of the similarities between the two materials there are still major differences, indicating that ferrocement requires a separate study to establish its structural performances. On the other hand, although a large amount of research has been carried out on ferrocement, its flexural behaviour is still not fully understood. The aim of this investigation is to study the structural behaviour of ferrocement plates under flexural loading and the influence of the different variables on the strength and deformation characteristics. The variables studied were the mesh number, strength, opening and distribution, presence of steel bars, and the thickness of the section and the mortar cover. The experimental programme included 49 plates, 1000x300 mm in dimensions, reinforced with woven type steel wire mesh and tested under two lines load. Deformation measurements were taken from first application of the load up till failure and about10000 crack measurements (crack width and spacing) were recorded. The crack width data were dealt with statistically. The effect of the variables on the crack width was studied, quantitatively, by comparing the rate of growth of crack width of the plates. It was found that ferrocement cracking behaviour is characterized by almost a full development of the cracks at relatively early stages of the load (about 30-50% of the ultimate load) and the crack width is smaller and more uniformly distributed than in reinforced concrete. The mesh number and yield strength influenced significantly the crack width and spacing. There was a limit for the mesh number after which the enhancement in the cracking performance of the plates slowed down noticeably. Crack width prediction equations were derived from these tests showed good correlation, whereas the published crack width formulae largely overestimated or underestimated the measured crack width. The strength and deformation were influenced mainly by the yield strength and fraction volume of reinforcement in the loading direction. The deflection is most likely to exceed the serviceability criteria before the crack width. For a span-deflection ratio of 180, the mean crack width was mostly below 20 microns, and the load was about 15-30% of the ultimate load. A procedure is proposed to analyse ferrocement sections under flexural loading. While application of reinforced concrete theory to predict the ultimate moment largely underestimated the experimental results, the proposed procedure predicted closely the experimental moment and deflection at first cracking, yielding and failure of the tested plates.

Shear behaviour of ferrocement deep beams

Tian, Shichuan January 2013 (has links)
This thesis presents the results of an experimental, numerical and analytical study to develop a design method to calculate shear resistance of flanged ferrocement beams with vertical mesh reinforcements in the web. Two groups of full-scale testing were conducted comprising of three I beams and four U beams. The I beams had the same geometry and reinforcement arrangements, but differed in the matrix strength or shear span to depth ratio. The U beams differed in web and flange thickness, reinforcement arrangements, matrix strength and shear span to depth ratio. The experimental data were used for validation of finite element models which had been developed using the ABAQUS software. The validated models were subsequently employed to conduct a comprehensive parametric study to investigate the effects of a number of design parameters, including the effect of matrix strength, shear span to depth ratio, cross sectional area, length of clear span, volume fraction of meshes and amount of rebar. The main conclusion from the experiments and parametric studies were: shear failure may occur only when the shear span to depth ratio is smaller than 1.5; the shear strength may increase by increasing the matrix strength, volume fraction of meshes, cross sectional area and amount of rebar. The main type of shear failure for I beams was diagonal splitting while for U beams it was shear flexural. Based on the results from the experimental and numerical studies, a shear design guide for ferrocement beams was developed. A set of empirical equations for the two different failure types and an improved strut-and-tie were proposed. By comparison with the procedures currently in practice, it is demonstrated that the methodology proposed in this thesis is likely to give much better predictions for shear capacity of flanged ferrocement beams.

Análise estrutural de reservatórios enterrados de argamassa armada com telas de aço soldadas / Structural analysis of swimming pools and water tanks in ferrocement with welded mesh

Paniago, Dálim Gomes 25 June 1998 (has links)
Ferrocement application in water tanks and swimming pools have started at the early 60\'s. Even though various applications had been succeed, until nowadays the techonology is essentially based on practical experience. There are no established methodologies which permit rational design, construction method improvement and a better assessment of the risks and reliability of the construction system. This work intend to contribute to the knowledge about the structural behavior of the ferrocement folded plate swimming pools and water tanks. Computer numerical simulations were made to investigate the membrane behavior under water loading, settlement and temperature variations. The influence of structure dimensions and mortar strength were also studied. These and others aspects related with the design method are discussed. The thesis also presents some comments about each construction stage as well as some cares needed to guarantee a good quality material. Looking for a durable and good performance structure, the order word to the designer is detailing, to the constructor is control and to the staff is awareness.

Rehabilitation of masonty walls by the application of resistant ferrocement overlays.

Oliveira, Fabiana Lopes de 18 April 2001 (has links)
This paper reports on the results of a study about the use of resistant overlays of cement and sands mortars in the rehabilitation of masonry walls subjected to axial and diagonal compression and flexure. The tests were carried out according to the NBR8949, ASTM 519 and NBR 14322 codes. The purpose of the tests was to observe the structural behavior of concrete block walls covered with several combinations of materials: plain mortar with two different strengths, welded steel mesh, steel fibers, polypropylene fibers and shear connectors. The dimensions of the specimens subjected to axial compression tests were 390 x 810 mm. They were built inside steel templates for a better precision during their construction. Wooden templates were set up for the diagonal compression tests to build and transport the 800 x 800 mm specimens. In the flexure tests, the walls (800 x 1600 mm) were tested with the larger side in the horizontal position, using two loading situations. After the conclusion of these tests and an analysis of the results, a series of tests was carried out on masonry panels subjected to loads distributed over a small area at the top of the wall. Three different situations were tested, i.e., undamaged walls, rehabilitated walls and reinforced walls. The decision to test panels with openings was based on the idea of creating situations to deviate the stresses in the plane of the wall, thereby inducing compression, tension and shear. All the tests were performed using an universal servo-controlled INSTRON machine to control the displacement speed, allowing the observation of the behavior of the walls after their peak resistance. Based on this study, it can be stated that this technique offers several interesting aspects that may be applied both in the rehabilitation (strengthening or repair) of masonry structures and in the construction of new structures with special performance requirements.

Ramires, Lucas Diemer January 2007 (has links)
The strengthening method studied in this work consists of the application of reinforced mortar (ferrocement) on a masonry wall, in other words, the existent wall, damaged or not, is covered with mortar and a steel welded wire mesh, which is fixed with connectors. A simplified design procedure was presented in order to determine the capacity of constructions of unreinforced masonry with this technique and subjected to in-plane loading, due to earthquakes, winds, displacement of the foundation, non-foreseen loads, constructive deficiencies, among others. This procedure was evaluated through comparisons with available results in the literature and through experimental results, also developed in this dissertation. Two groups of samples were laboratory tested, each one containing walls with and without reinforcement. The first group (Series A) contains walls of perforated ceramic bricks subjected to diagonal compression, while the second group (Series B) contains walls with a pinned-pinned beam shape, also of bricks, subjected to a concentrated load in the middle of the span. It was verified that the walls of Series A presented a four-times increase in the load capacity, while the walls of Series B presented a seven-times increase in the load capacity. Therefore, confirming available experimental evidence in the specialized literature, the technique and the simplified design procedure were demonstrated efficient and with great potential for application.

Proposta de tecnologia social para reduÃÃo do risco de eutrofizaÃÃo em aÃudes no semiÃrido / Proposed social technology for risk reduction in semiarid eutrophication in dams

Diego Castro Ribeiro 19 April 2013 (has links)
The deficit in the water balance of the Brazilian Semiarid (BS) makes water the dams vulnerable to the increased concentration of dissolved substances, which could limit or even derail its multiple uses. In addition, several human actions increase the risk of eutrophication of these water bodies. One is the intensive aquaculture, which may contribute to the increase of organic matter. For a sustainable aquaculture production, seeks to use technologies that are both agro-ecological and economic solidarity and promote food security. This study aimed to develop a proposal technology financially viable and socially suitable for fish producing without increasing the risk of eutrophication of dams, source of more than 90% of the water consumed in the BS. This technology makes the consortium with macrophytes in small-scale production of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in ferrocement tanks using recirculated water. The research was conducted in a private rural property, located in Horizonte, CearÃ, Brazil, between November 2012 and February 2013. Three modules were constructed using the technology of cultivation ferrocement and low cost materials for recirculation and aeration of the water. Were evaluated the growth performance with stocking density of 30 fish/mÂ, with three diets: only with commercial feed, with reduced ration in consortium with water hyacinth (Eicchornia crassipes) and with commercial feed and water hyacinth. Was performed financial analysis for the operation of a module simulating a production biannual cultivation of fish with 800 g, were obtained viability indicators, outcome measures and economic sensitivity analysis to changes in prices and market interest. Monitoring of water quality measurements were made in situ and laboratory testing, measuring the main physico-chemical parameters of interest in aquaculture. Were raised the potential characteristics of the system that could take it to the status of social technology as well as its main strengths and weaknesses, and to correlate them with possible environmental damage inherent and comparing them with the impacts of conventional tilapia culture. The module was constructed with two culture tanks ferrocement (creation and filtration), and a water pumping system and other aeration. According to the biometric data, it observed that treatment only with commercial diet is the most suitable, but the water hyacinth are indispensable in the biofilter for maintaining water quality in appropriate conditions. In simulation, the cultivation proved to be feasible (Cost-benefit = 1.84; Point leveling = 31%; Rate of return on capital = 60%) and very stable to changes in prices and market interest (Rate internal return = 101%). Furthermore, this mode of cultivation proved to be very promising as social technology, low risk environment with few resources and used small volume of wastewater generated. Moreover, it represents a source of animal protein and / or low-income families to pay concomitant with preserving the quality of the surface water resources of the BS decreased risk of eutrophication. It can be concluded that it is feasible in tilapia culture tanks ferrocement structure with water recirculation for reuse in construction and easy operation on a small scale. The effective cost of cultivation module (≈ US$ 1.075) is low when considering the benefits of activity for the development of BS, which strengthens aquaculture familiar with sustainable use of natural resources.
