A Performance Edition of Joseph Fiala's Concertante in B-Flat for Clarinet, Taille (English Horn) and Orchestra, a Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of W.A. Mozart, C. Debussy, D. Milhaud, J. Brahms, P. Hindemith, and Others

Widder, David R. 08 1900 (has links)
Joseph Fiala (1754-1816) was a composer and performer of the classical period. His many compositions include manuscripts of a concerto for clarinet, taille, and orchestra in the Fürstlich Thurn und Taxis Hofbibliothek in Regensburg, West Germany and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. , U.S.A. This paper identifies the instrument called "taille" as the English horn and discusses the work in areas of form, harmony, rhythm, orchestration, and use of solo instruments. Comparison with contemporary works shows the piece is typical of the eighteenth-century symphonie concertante and, together with the composer's manuscript, provides a basis for editing of the solo parts.

A Finite Difference Model For Induced Hypothermia During Shock

Lyon, Dylan S 01 January 2021 (has links)
The modified Fiala model from Westin was implemented with conditions for circulatory shock and hypothermia. The purpose is to model Emergency Preservation and Resuscitation (EPR), a procedure for inducing hypothermia in patients. Cold tissue temperatures reduce metabolism exponentially, greatly extending the window of anaerobic metabolic activity before permanent deoxygenation damage. EPR in patients undergoing hypovolemic shock can preserve the patient until primary surgical care and blood transfusions are attainable., thereby increasing survival rates. The main applications of EPR are military in-situ stabilization for transit to clinical care and extending the survivability of patients requiring prolonged surgery before blood transfusion. The model explored in this paper seeks to model the tissue temperatures of the body while enduring circulatory shock and various options of cooling devices. Calibrating this model with already available data enables its use for getting preliminary results and design parameters for prototype cooling devices. The final objective of this research is to support the design of a cooling device that can induce sustained hypothermia in a field setting, while still being mobile enough for military and ambulance use.

Tire model for dynamic analysis of driving over obstacles

Törn, Jonatan, Järn, Kalle January 2024 (has links)
Forklifts are commonly perceived as simple machines that are not representative of modern technology. However, a deeper analysis uncovers their inherent complexity and sophistication. This project aims to develop a tire model for indoor forklifts with sufficient accuracy that it can replace the need for physical tests and significant calibration, thereby shortening development time and decreasing costs. This report is part of a Master's thesis work on modeling shocks generated when driving over obstacles with a forklift. The project is conducted in collaboration with Linköping University and Toyota Material Handling Manufacturing Sweden. Various methods for modeling tire behavior, along with different contact types, have been explored and tested, primarily focusing on the Fiala tire model. Developing a tire model that accurately captures all aspects of driving over obstacles is a challenging endeavor. Despite several challenges, the findings presented in this report suggest that, with additional time, it is possible to develop a model that effectively simulates shocks across various speeds and obstacle heights.

George Soros v rétorice vybraných českých politických činitelů / The Image of George Soros Conveyed by Selected Czech Politicians

Koblížková, Anna January 2020 (has links)
This paper examines the discourse among Czech political actors on George Soros, an American billionaire and philanthropist. The work is divided into two parts, one being theoretical and the second applied. The former defines the theoretical foundations of the study, which are then used to interpret the results of the quantitative content analysis. Given the main objective of this paper - to demonstrate that the discourse relating to the figure of George Soros is in line with the interpretation of the New Populism theory - the theoretical section introduces the concept of populism and its chief problematics, and subsequently describes the main characteristics of the theory of New Populism by the British political scientist, Paul Taggart. A theoretical dataset was constructed on the basis of this interpretation of populism, which is then used as a research framework for the practical analysis. The second part of this paper opens with a description of the research methodology. This includes an explanation of the process used to select research subjects, to compile the dataset (data collection methodology and definition of the time period), and to formulate the function and its variables. The next segment of the second part of this paper deals with George Soros himself, or more precisely, the wider...

Improved Vehicle Dynamics Sensing during Cornering for Trajectory Tracking using Robust Control and Intelligent Tires

Gorantiwar, Anish Sunil 30 August 2023 (has links)
Tires, being the only component of the vehicle in contact with the road surface, are responsible for generating the forces for maintaining the vehicle pose, orientation and stability of the vehicle. Additionally, the on-board advanced chassis control systems require estimation of these tire-road interaction properties for their operation. Extraction of these properties becomes extremely important in handling limit maneuvers such as Double Lane Change (DLC) and cornering wherein the lateral force transfer is dependent upon these computations. This research focuses on the development of a high-fidelity vehicle-tire model and control algorithm framework for vehicle trajectory tracking for vehicles operating in this limit handling regime. This combined vehicle-tire model places an emphasis on the lateral dynamics of the vehicle by integrating the effects of relaxation length on the contact patch force generation. The vertical dynamics of the vehicle have also been analyzed, and a novel double damper has been mathematically modeled and experimentally validated. Different control algorithms, both classical and machine learning-based, have been developed for optimizing this vertical dynamics model. Experimental data has been collected by instrumenting a vehicle with in-tire accelerometers, IMU, GPS, and encoders for slalom and lane change maneuvers. Different state estimation techniques have been developed to predict the vehicle side slip angle, tire slip angle, and normal load to further assist the developed vehicle-tire model. To make the entire framework more robust, Machine Learning algorithms have been developed to classify between different levels of tire wear. The effect of tire tread wear on the pneumatic trail of the tire has been further evaluated, which affects the aligning moment and lateral force generation. Finally, a Model Predictive Control (MPC) framework has been developed to compare the performance between the conventional vehicle models and the developed vehicle models in tracking a reference trajectory. / Doctor of Philosophy / In our rapidly advancing world, self-driving or autonomous vehicles are no longer a vision of the future but a reality of today. As we grow more reliant on these vehicles, ensuring their safety and reliability becomes increasingly critical. Unlike traditional vehicles, self-driving cars operate without human intervention. Consequently, the onus of passenger and pedestrian safety falls squarely on the vehicle's control systems. The efficiency and effectiveness of these control systems are pivotal in preventing accidents and ensuring a smooth ride. One vital aspect of these control systems lies in understanding the tires' behavior, the only parts of the vehicle that are in contact with the road surface. A tire's interaction with the road surface significantly impacts the vehicle's handling and stability. Information such as how much of the tire is in contact with the road, the forces and moments generated at this contact point, becomes valuable for optimizing the vehicle's performance. This is particularly crucial when a vehicle is turning or cornering, where the forces developed between the tires and the road are key to maintaining control and stability. In this research, a framework has been designed to improve the vehicle performance, primarily by improving the modeling of tire lag dynamics. This refers to the delay or 'lag' between a change in tire conditions (such as pressure, wear, and temperature) and the corresponding change in tire behavior. In addition, in this research a vertical dynamics model of the vehicle has also been developed incorporated with a novel double damper suspension system. To complete the entire framework, the effect of tire wear over time and how this affects its performance and safety characteristics has also been examined. By estimating and understanding this wear, we can predict how it will affect the dynamic properties of the tire, thus improving the reliability and efficiency of our autonomous vehicles. The last piece of this framework comprises the development of an MPC controller to track a reference trajectory and evaluate the performance of the developed model.

Adapting a human thermoregulation model for predicting the thermal response of older persons

Novieto, Divine Tuinese January 2013 (has links)
A human thermoregulation model has been adapted for predicting the thermal response of Typical Older Persons. The model known as the Older Persons Model predicts the core body temperature and regulatory responses of the older people in environmental exposures of cold, warm and hot. The model was developed by modifying an existing dynamic human thermoregulation model using anthropometric and thermo-physical properties of older people. The Model defines the body as two interrelating systems of the body structure (passive system) and the control system of the central nervous system (active system). The Older person's passive system of the model was developed by meticulously extracting relevant experimental data from selected published research works relating to anthropometric and thermo-physical properties of older people. The resultant body structure (passive system) is a multi-segmented representation of a Typical Older Person. The active system (central nervous system) was developed by the application of a novel optimization method based on the working principles of Genetic Algorithms. The use of Genetic Algorithm enables the complex characteristics of the central nervous system of the older persons to be well represented and evaluated based on available data. Active system control signal coefficients for sweating, shivering, vasodilation and vasoconstriction were explicitly derived based on experimental data sourced from literature. The Older Persons Model has been validated using independent experimental data and its results show good agreement with measured data. Furthermore, the Older Persons Model has been applied to several test cases extracted from published literature and its results show good agreement with published findings on the thermal behaviour of older persons. An interview study conducted as part of this research revealed that, professionals (built environment specialists) found the Older Persons Model useful in assisting to further understand the thermal response of the older persons. In conclusion, the adaptation of an existing human thermoregulation model has resulted in a new model, which allows improved prediction of heat and cold strain of the older person although there exist limitations.

Assesment of the Thermal Environment in Vehicular Cabins / Assesment of the Thermal Environment in Vehicular Cabins

Fojtlín, Miloš January 2019 (has links)
V prostediach kabín áut a dopravných prostriedkov je riadenie parametrov tepelného prostredia komplikované z dôvodu ich asymetrickej a časovo premenlivej povahy. Obdobné aplikácie možno nájsť i v budovách a prostrediach s podobnými charakteristikami.
