Sistemas de sensores ópticos baseados em fibra óptica de perfil-W dopada com Érbio / Optical sensing systems based on Erbium-doped W-fiber

A grandeza da brusca transição entre a perda baixa em comprimentos de onda curtos e a perda alta em comprimentos de onda longos excede 200 dB/km e é extremamente sensível à curvatura aplicada na fibra. O fenômeno é atribuído ao acoplamento modal entre o modo guiado no núcleo e os modos discretos guiados na casca externa. A fibra óptica ativa de casca rebaixada Er: Al/Ge/SiO2 (DC-EDF) pode ser projetada para ter um corte do modo fundamental próximo de 1530 nm o que proporciona supressão distribuída da emissão espontânea amplificada (ASE) na banda-C em proveito da ASE na banda-S. Este fenômeno, associado a um outro, o de perda induzida por curvatura, proporciona um modelo alternativo para obter amplificação óptica na banda-S, exigida para expandir a capacidade de sistemas de multiplexação por divisão de comprimentos de onda (WDM). Um laser à fibra óptica, configurado na forma de anel, de fibra óptica de casca rebaixada dopada com érbio, que pode ser sintonizado através de perdas induzidas por curvatura na fibra óptica, ou pelo uso de um filtro óptico sintonizável, também pode ser projetado. Devido às características de amplificação e "lasing" desenvolvidas para aplicação na banda-S, baseadas em propriedades únicas, a fibra DC-EDF foi base dos sistemas de sensores desenvolvidos neste trabalho. De fato, os sistemas de sensores propostos mostraram alta sensibilidade, larga faixa dinâmica, e ampla largura de banda, e podem ser usados para monitorar parâmetros estáticos, tais como força, pressão, deslocamentos e parâmetros dinâmicos usados em acústica e vibrações. Dois tipos de sistemas de sensores, com diferentes modelos, foram estudados: um sensor-amplificador e um sensor-laser. Os desempenhos desses sistemas de sensores na banda-S (1490 e 1510 nm) foram estudados e analisados nas condições estática e dinâmica / Abstract: Depressed-cladding (often referred to as dual-clad or "W"- fiber) fibers with fundamental-mode cutoffs provide high distributed losses at long wavelengths and low losses at short wavelengths. The magnitude of the abrupt transition between low-loss at short wavelengths and high-loss at long wavelengths exceeds 200 dB/km and is found to be extremely sensitive to fiber curvature. The phenomenon is attributed to mode coupling between the core-guided mode and the discrete modes guided in the outer cladding. The active depressed-cladding Er: Al/Ge/SiO2 fiber (DC ? EDF) may be designed to have a fundamental mode cutoff near 1530 nm and provides distributed suppression of C-band amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) to the advantage of that in the S-band. This phenomenon, associated with the mechanism of induced bending loss, provides an alternative approach to obtain amplification in S-band, required to expand the capacity of wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) systems. A S-band depressed-cladding erbium-doped fiber ring laser which can be tuned through the active fiber bending losses or by using an optical tunable filter, can be designed as well. Due to the amplification and lasing characteristics developed for S-band, based on unique properties, the DC - EDF was the basis of the optical sensing systems developed in this work. In fact, the sensing systems proposed showed high sensitivity, high dynamic range and wide bandwidth, and can be used to monitor static parameters, such as force, pressure, displacement and dynamic parameters used in acoustics and vibrations. Two types of sensing systems, with different approaches, have been studied: an amplifier-sensor and a laser-sensor. Sources de supercontinuum pour la microspectroscopie Raman cohérente large-bande / Supercontinuum laser sources for broadband CARS microspectroscopy

La microspectroscopie Raman cohérente (CARS) est une méthode d'analyse optique sans marqueur qui permet d'identifier des liaisons moléculaires dans un milieu d'intérêt (échantillon) pour permettre de déterminer la composition chimique de ce milieu. Elle nécessite l'excitation concomitante de l'échantillon par deux ondes spectralement décalées (onde pompe et onde Stokes) afin de faire entrer en résonance les liaisons à détecter. Pour la détection de plusieurs liaisons simultanément (microspectroscopie Raman cohérente large-bande ou Multiplex-CARS), la source Stokes monochromatique est remplacée par une source laser large-bande (supercontinuum). Les travaux effectués dans le cadre de cette thèse visent à proposer de nouvelles sources de supercontinuum émettant des faisceaux optimisés en termes d'élargissement spectral et de densité spectrale de puissance pour la microspectroscopie Multiplex-CARS. Pour ce faire, les moyens de développer des continuums spectraux performants ont été explorés dans trois fibres optiques différentes: une fibre microstructurées air/silice monomode à gros cœur dopé à l'ytterbium permettant une réamplification du signal tout au long de sa propagation ; une fibre monomode conventionnelle en régime de dispersion normale pour obtenir un élargissement spectral par saturation du gain Raman ; une fibre multimode dans laquelle le faisceau spectralement élargi par saturation du gain Raman à très forte puissance subit également un auto-nettoyage spatial par effet Kerr tout au long de sa propagation, produisant en sortie un faisceau de forte brillance dont le profil d’intensité est semblable à celui du mode fondamental. Une étude spectrotemporelle complète est présentée pour ces trois sources. / Coherent Raman microspectroscopy (CARS) is an optical method used to identify molecular bonds in a sample in order to analyze and determine its complete composition. It requires the simultaneous excitation of the sample by two waves (the pump wave and the Stokes wave) in order to induce resonant vibration of the bond to be detected. For multiple bonds analysis (broadband coherent Raman microspectroscopy our Multiplex-CARS), the monochromatic Stokes wave must be replaced by a broadband beam (supercontinuum). The aim of this thesis was to design supercontinuum sources optimized for Multiplex-CARS application, in particular in terms of spectral bandwidth and spectral power density. Supercontinuum generation was investigated in three different optical fibers: (i) a microstructured single mode fiber with a large Yb doped core in which the input beam was re-amplified all along its propagation; (ii) a conventional singlemode fiber pumped in the normal dispersion regime in which spectral broadening was achieved by means of Raman gain saturation; (iii) a conventional graded-index multimode fiber in which the beam spectrally broadened by Raman gain saturation at very high power also experienced spatial self-cleaning by Kerr effect, resulting in a high brillance output beam with an,intensity profile close to that of the fundamental mode. A complete spectrotemporal study is achieved for each of these three sources.

[pt] Objetivando suprimir as instabilidades dinâmicas de ganho em um amplificador à fibra dopada com Érbio (EDFA), uma nova configuração de laser em anel é apresentada e demonstrada. Neste trabalho, analizamos os efeitos da variação do nível de atenuação no laço de re-alimentação sobre a resposta transitória do EDFA. Particularmente, observamos as excursões de ganho experimentadas pelo canal sobrevivente quando sete dentre oito canais da rede são adicionados ou removidos, à exemplo do que ocorre em sistemas WDM reais. Sob esta análise, avaliamos o desempenho do sistema em suprimir as instabilidades dinâmicas de ganho do EDFA. / [en] A new ring laser configuration to eliminate the gain dynamic instabilities of an erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is proposed and demonstrated. We examine the effect of the attenuation level in the optical feedback path over thetransient response of the EDFA. In particular, we look at the transient gain excursions experienced by surviving channel when seven of eight channels are added or dropped, like in real WDM systems. Using this analysis as a guide, we highlight the robustness of the approach and evaluate its performance to EDFA gain stabilization.

Radiation hardening of rare-earth doped fiber amplifiers / Durcissement aux radiations d'amplificateurs à fibres optiques dopés aux terres rares

Cette thèse est consacrée à l'étude de la réponse aux radiations d'amplificateurs à fibre optiques dopées Er 3+ et Yb3+. Ces dispositifs fonctionnant à 1,5 µm ont été conçus pour des applications spatiales et l'évaluation de leurs performances revêt d’une importance capitale dans un tel environnement hostile. Deux traitements, le chargement en H2 et le co-dopage au Ce du cœur de la fibre, ont été étudiés comme solutions de durcissement aux radiations. Une étude spectroscopique a permis d’approfondir la connaissance des mécanismes physiques de base responsables de la dégradation de ces composants et par conséquent de proposer des solutions de durcissement. La thèse est organisée en trois parties. La Partie I présente une description générale des fibres dopées aux ions de Terres Rares (TR), avec l'introduction des concepts de base de la physique de tels éléments et leur interaction avec la matrice hôte (verre phosphosilicate). L'état de l'art concernant les effets des rayonnements sur les fibres dopées aux TR est également présenté. La Partie II décrit les échantillons et les techniques expérimentales utilisées. La Partie III décrit les principaux résultats dont les tests, en configuration active, démontrent que le co-dopage au Ce ainsi que le chargement en H2 ont un rôle-clé dans la limitation des pertes induites par rayonnement. L'analyse spectroscopique de la matrice vitreuse (Raman) et des ions TR (par mesures de luminescence stationnaire et résolue en temps) mettent en exergue un fort effet de durcissement, conduisant à une préservation de l'efficacité du système physique en opération / This thesis is devoted to the study of the radiation response of optical amplifiers based on Er/Yb doped fibers. These devices operating at 1.5 µm are conceived for space applications and contextually the evaluation of their performance in such harsh environment becomes of crucial importance. Two treatments, the H2-loading and the Ce-doping of the fiber core, are investigated as radiation hardening solutions. A spectroscopic study has been associated, in order to improve the knowledge of the physical mechanisms responsible for the signal degradation and the action of the hardening solutions. The thesis is organized in three parts. Part I deals with a general description of the Rare-Earth (RE)-doped fibers, with the introduction of some basic concepts of the RE-ion physics and their interaction with the host matrix material (phosphosilicate glass). The state-of-art of the radiation effects on the optical fibers, particularly the RE- doped fibers, is also overviewed. Part II describes the samples (fiber fabrication, geometry and chemical compositions), and the used experimental techniques, including a short discussion on the related theoretical background. Part III describes the main results; firstly, the active tests, performed on the RE-doped fiber as part of an optical amplifier, demonstrate that the Ce-codoping and H2-load have a key-role in the limitation of the radiation induced losses. Then, the spectroscopic analysis of the phosphosilicate glass (Raman study) and of the RE-ions (stationary and time-resolved luminescence) show a stabilization effect due to the two treatments, leading to a preservation of the high efficiency of the physical system under study
