Characterisation of the supply-settlement relationship for Semibalanus balanoides (L.) along a wave swept coast in Fife, East Scotland

Phelan, Patrick J. C. January 2007 (has links)
This thesis describes the results of a three year study which collected larvae of the acorn barnacles Semibalanus balanoides on a rocky coastline in Fife, East Scotland. The nauplii larvae of S. balanoides are released from their parent in springtime in the United Kingdom and develop in the plankton for approximately one to two months. During this period they are transported some distance from the parent population and eventually return to the intertidal shoreline as a cyprid larval stage. The ‘decision’ to settle is a crucial point in the life history of the organism as most sessile organisms cannot move once this has occurred. The supply of larvae to intertidal shorelines was historically neglected until the 1980s. Patterns of settlement were largely considered irrelevant to distribution patterns of adults relative to postsettlement processes such as predation and competition. Despite the resurgence in “supply-side ecology” in the past 20 years there has been little development towards the measurement of larval supply. Consequently there has been very little description of fine scale or large spatio-temporal studies involving larval supply. This study demonstrates the first study directly addressing larval supply independently from larval settlement at mesoscales (metres to kilometres; days to years). Improvements were made to the passive larval trap described by Todd (2003). A conical opening was combined with the spiral trap design and a number of inlet areas were trialled (0.25cm², 0.5cm², 1cm² and 2cm²). These were tested across typical wave regimes measured with a new autonomous pressure sensing wave transducer and the 1cm² inlet was selected as the most appropriate trap design due to a balance between an increased per unit inlet larval capture and sufficient absolute larval capture so as to identify daily variation in larval supply to a site. Larval settlement has been studied extensively and is often used as a direct measure of rates of larval supply. It is widely assumed therefore that rates of settlement are a direct reflection of rates of supply, as long as settlement substrates and adult conspecific responses remain uniform. This thesis provides a means of accurately characterising the supply-settlement relationship for S. balanoides independent of substrate based responses and demonstrates that this is not the case. The relationship was found to be asymptotic, even at sites where there was low larval supply. It was concluded that density-dependent larva-larva interactions were present during the settlement of larvae and were relevant at daily temporal scales, limiting the rates of larval settlement proportional to larval density. There was no obvious effect on this relationship due to wave action however differences were observed between sites and years. Saturation of preferential environments within the tiles was observed resulting in a settlement preference cascade, with larvae being forced to settle in increasingly less preferable areas of the tiles with increasing larval density. Larva-larva interactions are demonstrated as having a considerable effect on the rates of settlement of S. balanoides.

School engagement, self-esteem and wellbeing during transfer from primary to secondary school

Horobin, M. Vivienne January 2009 (has links)
For many years, educators, psychologists and parents have expressed concern about the apparent deterioration of pupil motivation and performance after children move to secondary school. This study used a longitudinal design to examine the transfer process from the perspective of a group of 393 children (195 boys, 198 girls) as they moved from 19 primary schools to four secondary schools in Fife. Children’s self-perceptions of school commitment, school belonging, school participation, self-esteem and global wellbeing were evaluated four times over a 13 month period, twice before transfer in the final year of primary school and twice after transfer in the first year of secondary school. Information was also collected about family and home life, emotions, lifestyle and school on each occasion. The data was analysed using multilevel modelling in order to examine how each of the five outcome variables changed over the time of the study, and how they related to a series of independent variables. It was anticipated that changes in these outcomes may have occurred immediately after the move to secondary school, perhaps followed by an improvement six months later after they had adapted to changes and settled in to their new schools. The results showed that, contrary to expectations, all outcomes except school participation recorded an improvement at wave 3, immediately after the transfer to secondary school. However, there was some evidence that after an initial ‘honeymoon period’, children perceived certain aspects of school in a less positive light and by wave 4 there was a decline in all outcomes except for the perception of self-esteem, which continued to improve. Since wave 4 was only a few months after transition, a significant change in children’s views is seen quite quickly after transfer. It is not clear whether this represents a return to a more realistic level or if this signals the beginning of a more prolonged negative attitude towards school and education in general. The general conclusion is that the process of transfer to secondary schools is well managed, but it might be helpful for induction programmes to prepare children for the changes in teaching and learning methods that might be encountered, and perhaps other types of programme might be beneficial during the first year.

The manager-subordinate dyad: the relationship between the fit of human values and the personal state of quality of life at work.

Antonio, Fábio Alessandro Affonso 14 December 2011 (has links)
The relationship between the fit of values and subjective well-being has been identified in past research. However, minor attention has been focused on understanding the direct relationship between conflicting values and quality of work life, especially in the managersubordinate dyad. The theory of leader-member exchange predicts that the leader differentiates his subordinates and thus establishes a distinctive relationship with each of them. To discern between individuals from his team the leader uses, among several possible criteria, the compatibility of features. Leaders and followers who share values establish high quality interactions, generating positive results for each member of the dyad. In this sense, this study questioned as its fundamental problem: what are the relationships between the dyadic compatibility of values of managers and their subordinates and the personal state of quality of work life of managers and subordinates? Studying this relationship, especially in the case of the dyad between manager and subordinate, can promote a better understanding of the dynamics of organizational behavior. That said, this study aimed to (a) investigate the association between the compatibility of subordinates\' personal values and social values (subjective fit) and their personal state of quality of work life, and to (b) investigate the association between the compatibility of the personal values of managers and subordinates (objective fit) and their personal state of quality of work life. For this purpose, a selfadministered electronic survey was sent to the alumni database of the Faculty of Economics, Administration and Accounting from the University of São Paulo. The questionnaire was composed of the instruments PVQ-21 for the definition of human values and BPSO-96 to the measurement of the perception of personal state of quality of work life of managers and subordinates. Sampling was carried out non-probabilistically, obtained by convenience, composing one of the limitations to the generalizability of the results of this study. Furthermore, the data were analyzed using polynomial regression to determine the associations between the compatibility of values in the manager-subordinate dyad and the perceptions of personal state of quality of life at work. From the results, it is possible to consider that the subjective and objective fit of values among members of the managersubordinate dyad is associated with their quality of work life, especially in the conflict dimensions of self-transcendence and self-enhancement from the value theory of Schwartz (1992). Finally, this study proposes the joint use of the algebraic, modular and quadratic indexes of compatibility for the interpretation of the results of regressions on studies of the compatibility of values and other variables, unlike the literature on the subject suggests. In this study, the coefficients of the three models do not contradict. Their magnitudes and signs were conserved in all three cases. In addition, the variables that entered the models were similar. This fact points to a joint reading of the three models so that interpretations of results should produce more informative scenarios than the analysis of an isolated model.

At first the work was structured upon a methodological basis mainly based on fieldwork with participant observation. By recording in photographs, using audio and video it has been possible to collect consistent information for further characterization and analysis of the performance of the group in question. Subsequently a brief study was conducted about the terms that are present in the whole of the group and research on the Cabaçais bands. The key concepts culture, tradition, modernity and folklore were characterized and contextualized in the research and understanding of them became essential to the understanding of the group's performance and relationships that shape their musicality. Understanding the Cabaçais bands in their historical, aesthetic and structural aspects was essential for the process of cultural exchanges and the changes built into their practice and musical language, from their private interaction as the modern world could understand.
