Köhl, Jacqueline January 2013 (has links)

The Amber of the Moment

Knippel, Mark Jacob, 1983- 06 1900 (has links)
1 score (vii, 56 p.) Includes one sound recording in AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) / The Amber of the Moment is a thirteen-minute composition for orchestra. Inspiration for this piece is drawn from two sources: the novel Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., and my desire to utilize techniques derived from various musical cultures, including Balinese gamelan and African drumming and marimba playing. Although not directly narrative, much of the imagery portrayed in Slaughterhouse Five informed the emotional landscape of the piece. As to the use of techniques from other cultures, my aim is not to merely imitate them, but to utilize them in a manner appropriate to the tradition of orchestral concert music. / Committee in charge: Dr. David Crumb, Chairperson; Dr. Robert Kyr, Member; Dr. Stephen Rodgers, Member

A Poetic Synthesis and Theoretical Analysis of Thomas Ades' Five Eliot Landscapes

Markou, Stella Ioanna January 2010 (has links)
In the short span of his career, Thomas Ades has made significant contributions to classical music. Despite his extraordinary compositional output, awards and international recognition, very little serious study exists about Ades' work. This document is intended to fill a deficiency within the existing body of critical research, as well as to aid future performers and Ades scholars in the understanding of Five Eliot Landscapes, Opus 1. In addition to presenting a theoretical analysis of Five Eliot Landscapes, this document discusses how Ades utilizes T.S. Eliot's poetic cycle Landscapes as a springboard for a series of compositional etudes, in which he develops and explores five main concepts and techniques. Specifically, Ades uses interval cycles, Nancarrow tempo canons, musical homages to Olivier Messiaen and Gyorgy Kurtag, musical quotations and the creation of a distinct compositional signature scale. The development and permutation of these concepts have helped to establish the foundation of Ades' compositional style. To complement the theoretical analysis, this document presents a poetic synthesis of the written literature on Eliot's Landscapes and addresses musical correlations to the text. A biographical description of Ades' compositional output as well as a general overview of Eliot's Landscapes is also presented.

Silva, Barbara Barbosa Claudino da 27 February 2018 (has links)
We present a research proposal in the Natural Language Processing field, to recognize personality through texts in the portuguese language. Using texts from the social network Facebook we built a corpus labeled with authors Big-5 personality traits, and after identifying the most relevant atributes to recognize personality, we built computational models based on those attributes. The model was expected to recognize personality without the help of any other methods commonly used in this task, such as inventories or interviews with psychologists. Using lexical methods such as the LIWC dictionary or psycholinguistic attributes, and methods from the text itself, such as bag of words, distributed representation of words and documents, we obtained models for personality recognition without the need of other methods most commonly used for this task. The results of distributed representation methods are slightly better than the results using the LIWC dictionary, with the advantage of not requiring features dependent on a specific language

Personlighet och arbetsrelaterad utmattning : En kvantitativ studie / Work-related fatigue and personality

Holmberg, Anna January 2021 (has links)
Mental illness as a part of work-related fatigue may in some cases lead to longperiods of sick leave. This in turn often has major consequences for the individual, the workorganisation and the society. Present study examines the relationship between personality andwork-related fatigue. The participants (N=142) answered a web survey containing generalbackground questions and 16 statements about personality and work-related fatigue. Theresults indicated a negative correlation between neuroticism and emotional exhaustion.Furthermore the results implicated positive correlation between extraversion, conscientiousness and openness and personal accomplishment. The results implicated lack ofcorrelations between personality and depersonalization. The conclusion in the present studyindicated correlation between personality and work-related fatigue. The results are partly inline with previous research.
