Piezometry and Strain Rate Estimates Along Mid-Crustal Shear Zones

Francsis, Matthew Keegan 21 May 2012 (has links)
Dynamically recrystallized quartz microstructure and grainsize evolution along mid-crustal shear zones allows for the estimation of tectonic driving stresses and strain rates acting in the mid-crust. Quartz-rich tectonites from three exhumed mid-crustal shear zones, the Main Central Thrust (MCT; Sutlej valley, NW India), South Tibetan Detachment System (STDS; Rongbuk valley, S Tibet), and Moine thrust (NW Scotland), were analyzed. Deformation temperatures estimated from quartz microstructural and petrofabric thermometers indicate steep apparent thermal gradients (80–420 °C/km) across 0.5–2.3 km thick sample transects across each shear zone. Quartz recrystallization microstructures evolve from transitional bulging/sub-grain rotation to dominant grain boundary migration at ~ 200 m structural distance as traced away from each shear zone. Optically measured quartz grainsizes increase from ~ 30 μm nearest the shear zones to 120+ μm at the largest structural distances. First-order Zener space analysis across the Moine nappe suggests strong phyllosilicate control on recrystallized quartz grainsize. Recrystallized quartz grainsize piezometry indicates that differential stress levels sharply decrease away from the shear zones from ~ 35 MPa to 10 MPa at ~ 200 m structural distance. Strain rates estimated with quartz dislocation creep flow laws are tectonically reasonable, between 10⁻¹² – 10⁻¹⁴ s⁻¹. Traced towards each shear zone strain rate estimates first decrease one order of magnitude before rapidly increasing one to two orders of magnitude at structural distances of ~ 200 m. This kinked strain rate profile is likely due to the steep apparent thermal gradients and relatively constant differential stress levels at large structural distances. / Master of Science

Aplicação de conceitos de elastoplasticidade a solos não saturados / Elastoplastic concepts applied to non saturated soils

Machado, Sandro Lemos 27 November 1998 (has links)
This thesis deals with the application of elasto-plastic concepts to a typical non saturated soil from São Carlos - SP. The soil profile analysed is composed at is upper part of a sandy soil of coluvium origin and of a residual soil from sandstone at depths larger than 8 m. The water level is at a depth of about 10 m. The experimental work included compression triaxial tests following different stress paths and confined compression tests performed both on saturated and on unsaturated specimens. In the case of the residual soil of sandstone, its main elastoplastic characteristics are studied. It is shown that yield points can be fairly fitted by the yield surface proposed by of Alonso et al. (1990) and Balmaceda et al. (1992), which are an extension of modified Cam-Clay yield surface. In this case, an associated flow law also gave reasonable results in reproducing experimental data. In order to get a better adjustment between experimental and theoretical results, a new constitutive model is proposed using a new yield surface and a non associated flow law. It is shown that this new yield surface can better adjust experimental yield points, mainly those located at left of the critical state line (C.S.L.) and the new flow rule leaded to lower deviation of incremental plastic strain vectors. In the proposed model, the yield surface LC is obtained considering both &#947(s) and po experimental values. The proposed and Balmaceda et al. (1992) models were utilised to predict the laboratory soil behaviour, showing good results. The parameters already used to reproduce laboratory tests were also used to model foundation structures built in the soil studied and a fair agreement between experimental and predict results was obtained.

Data protection and transborder data flows : implications for Nigeria's integration into the global network economy

Allotey, Asuquo Kofi Essien 02 1900 (has links)
One of the realities that developing countries like Nigeria have to face today is that national and international markets have become more and more interconnected through the global platform of telecommunications and the Internet. This global networked economy is creating a paradigm shift in the focus of development goals and strategies particularly for developing countries. Globalisation is driving the nations of the world more into political and economic integration. These integrations are enhanced by a globally interconnected network of economic and communication systems at the apex of which is the Internet. This network of networks thrives on and encourages the expansion of cross-border flows of ideas and information, goods and services, technology and capital. Being an active member of the global network economy is essential to Nigeria’s economic development. It must plug into the network or risk being shut out. The global market network operates by means of rules and standards that are largely set by the dominant players in the network. Data protection is a critical component of the regime of rules and standards that govern the global network economy; it is evolving into an international legal order that transcends geographical boundaries. The EU Directive on data protection is the de facto global standard for data protection; it threatens to exclude non-EU countries without an adequate level of privacy protection from the EU market. More than 50 countries have enacted data protection laws modelled on the EU standard. Access to the huge EU market is a major motivation for the current trend in global harmonisation of domestic data protection laws. This trend provides a compelling reason for examining the issues relating to data protection and trans-border data flows and their implications for Nigeria’s desire to integrate into the global network economy. There are two primary motivations for legislating restrictions on the flow of data across national boundaries. The first is the concern for the privacy of the citizens, and second, securing the economic well-being of a nation. It is important that Nigeria’s privacy protection keeps pace with international norms in the provision of adequate protection for information privacy order to prevent potential impediments to international trading opportunities. / Public, Constitutional, & International / LLD
