Architecture of the Silurian sedimentary cover sequence in the Cadia porphyry Au-Cu district, NSW, Australia : implications for post-mineral deformation

Washburn, Malissa 11 1900 (has links)
Alkalic porphyry style Au-Cu deposits of the Cadia district are associated with Late-Ordovician monzonite intrusions, which were emplaced during the final phase of Macquarie Arc magmatism at the end of the Benambran Orogeny. N-striking faults, including the curviplanar, northerly striking, moderately west-dipping basement thrust faults of the Cadiangullong system, developed early in the district history. NE-striking faults formed during rifting in the late Silurian. Subsequent E-W directed Siluro- Devonian extension followed by regional E-W shortening during the Devonian Tabberabberan Orogeny dismembered these intrusions, thereby superposing different levels porphyry Au-Cu systems as well as the host stratigraphy. During the late Silurian, the partially exhumed porphyry systems were buried beneath the Waugoola Group sedimentary cover sequence, which is generally preserved in the footwall of the Cadiangullong thrust fault system. The Waugoola Group is a typical rift-sag sequence, deposited initially in local fault-bounded basins which then transitioned to a gradually shallowing marine environment as local topography was overwhelmed. Basin geometry was controlled by pre-existing basement structures, which were subsequently inverted during the Devonian Tabberabberan Orogeny, offsetting the unconformity by up to 300m vertically. In the Waugoola Group cover, this shortening was accommodated via a complex network of minor detachments that strike parallel to major underlying basement faults. For this reason, faults and folds measured at the surface in the sedimentary cover can be used as a predictive tool to infer basement structures at depth.

Lefebvre, François 03 1900 (has links)
Microarrays remain an important tool for the measurement of gene expression, and a myriad of methods for their pre-processing or statistical testing of differential expression has been proposed in the past. However, insufficient and sometimes contradictory evidence has prevented the emergence of a strong consensus over a preferred methodology. This leaves microarray practitioners to somewhat arbitrarily decide which method should be used to analyze their data. Here we present a novel approach to the problem of comparing methods for the identification of differentially expressed genes. Over eight hundred analytic pipelines were applied to more than a hundred independent microarray experiments. The accuracy of each analytic pipeline was assessed by measuring the average level of co-regulation uncovered across all data sets. This analysis thus relies on a varied set of biologically relevant data, does not confound reproducibility for accuracy and can easily be extended to future analytic pipelines. This procedure identified FARMS summarization and the TREAT gene ordering statistic as algorithms significantly more accurate than other alternatives. Most interestingly, our results corroborate recent findings about the importance of taking the magnitude of change into account along with an assessment of statistical significance.

A regional Investigation of the Thermal and Fluid Flow History of the Drummond Basin, Central Queensland, Australia.

Morrison, Christopher Stedman Unknown Date (has links)
Abstract The Late Devonian-Early Carboniferous Drummond Basin of central Queensland, Australia is one of the oldest units of the New England Fold Belt. Samples of authigenic clay minerals have been collected from across the Drummond Basin and analysed using mineralogic, isotopic and geochronologic techniques. X-Ray diffraction analysis on 36 samples selected from six exploration wells was carried out on volcaniclastic and argillaceous sandstones and mudstones of the Drummond Basin sequence in order to ascertain authigenic illite content. Sixteen samples were found to be suitable for K-Ar dating purposes, containing abundant illite and illite/smectite mixed layers (I/S). K-Ar age dating was carried out on these selected samples yielding three age groups at 300, 250 and 200 Ma. Temperature of formation was estimated for the authigenic illite and illite/smectite minerals, based on illite crystallinity and illite content of illite/smectite mixed layers. Two groups of temperatures have been delineated, with a high temperature assemblage of between 275¨¬C-320¨¬C and a low temperature assemblage of approximately 100¨¬C. When compared with the age groups, it is seen that the older event was typically hotter. Stable isotope compositions for the authigenic clay minerals were analysed with ¥äD and ¥ä18O values of between -68¢¶ to -117¢¶ and +7.5¢¶ to +14.4¢¶ (SMOW) respectively. Isotopic compositions for the fluid in equilibrium with the clay minerals were calculated using palaeotemperatures estimated from the clay mineralogy and range between -90¢¶ and -41¢¶ and -0.6¢¶ and +8.7¢¶ (SMOW) for hydrogen and oxygen respectively. These compositions are more depleted in deuterium and more enriched in 18O than those previously reported for basins in the region. The data also produced three groups of fluid compositions, which correlate with the age distributions delineated by the K-Ar geochronology. The first fluid composition, which correlated with the Permo-Carboniferous age (~300 Ma) is interpreted to result from a mixing of Permo-Carboniferous meteoric water with highly evolved formation water trapped within the Drummond Basin since deposition of the basin. The regional extensional event at the Permo-Carboniferous boundary, which initiated the opening of the Bowen Basin to the east of the Drummond Basin allowed meteoric water to percolate deep into the basin, enabling the growth of illite rich clay minerals at this time. The second fluid group is considered to represent the evolution of Late Triassic meteoric water migrating through the Drummond Basin during another extensional period in the region at approximately 200 Ma. This event precipitated a new period of clay mineral growth in the basin (reflected in the K-Ar dates), raised the geothermal gradient in the region and extended the crust, forming new sedimentary basins within the New England Fold Belt. The third assemblage of fluid compositions were found to be very similar to the Late Triassic group, with ¥äD and ¥ä18O values plotting very close to the Late Triassic meteoric water evolution trend. This is interpreted as representing the same fluid as that which produced the Late Triassic compositions and therefore the 250 Ma ages may represent partial resetting of older ages by the Late Triassic thermal episode. However, if it is assumed that these K-Ar ages are not old ages partially reset by a thermal event, the stable isotope data could represent a mixing of Mid-Late Permian meteoric water with formation water trapped in the basin. This event may represent the regional compressive Hunter-Bowen event and may be responsible for dewatering the basin before the Late Triassic extensional episode.

Introduction: Vocal cord paralysis is characterized as one of the main complications and sequels after thyroidectomy. Results: Four randomized clinical trials involving 1.379 patients undergoing thyroidectomy using neuromonitoring or with identification only of the RLN, of which 2.605 was the total number of nerves at risk evaluated. Neuromonitoring reduced the risk of total (transient and permanent) vocal fold paralysis after thyroidectomies (RR 0.64, 95% CI 0.93 to 0.95, I 2 = 30%), as well as decreased the risk of transient paralysis (RR 0.60, 95% CI 0.38 to 0.95, I 2 = 10%), but did not decrease the risk of permanent paralysis (RR 0.84, 95% CI 0.36 to 1.93, I2 = 0%). The analysis of the mean time of surgery was conducted in two studies, however, the heterogeneity between the studies was greater than 75% and the meta-analysis was not appropriate to establish the difference in the mean time of surgery between the groups. As the analysis of subgroups, it was observed that neuromonitoring did not reduce the risk of transient paralysis (RR 0.61, 95% CI 0.28 to 1.31, I 2 = 0%) and neither the risk of permanent paralysis in low-risk thyroidectomies (RR 1.03, 95% CI 0.21 to 5.07, I2 not applicable). As it also did not reduce the risk of transient paralysis (RR 0.75, 95% CI 0.18 to 3.07, I2 = 71%) and permanent vocal fold paralysis in high-risk thyroidectomies (RR 0, 69, 95% CI 0.27 to 1.79, I 2 = 4%). Conclusions: This meta-analysis using only randomized clinical trials has demonstrated that recurrent laryngeal nerve neuromonitoring in thyroidectomies possibly slightly reduces the risk of transient vocal fold paralysis but probably makes little or no difference in the risk of permanent paralysis.

Moletrack scarps to mountains: Quaternary tectonics of the central Alaska Range / Quaternary tectonics of the central Alaska Range

xvi, 121 p. : ill. (some col.), maps (some col.) Also includes two large-scale maps in two separate pdf files. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / Deformation across plate boundaries often occurs over broad zones with relative motions between plates typically accommodated by faults of different styles acting together in a complex system. Collision of the Yakutat microplate within the Alaskan portion of the Pacific-North America plate boundary drives deformation over 600 km away where the Denali fault divides predominantly rigid crustal block motions of southern Alaska from distributed deformation in central Alaska. Quaternary geologic mapping along the Nenana River valley and the Japan Hills of the northern foothills of the Alaska Range defines zones of Quaternary thrust faulting recorded in the progressive deformation of Pleistocene fluvial terraces. I use topographic profiles of these terraces and paleoseismic trenching of fault scarps to characterize the Quaternary activity and constrain the subsurface geometry of these faults. Radiocarbon and cosmogenic exposure dating methods provide age control on the stratigraphy in the trenches and landforms offset by these faults. These observations define a 1-1.5 mm/yr slip rate for the Gold King fault which changes laterally from a north-vergent thrust into a north and south vergent thrust wedge that uplifts the Japan Hills. Along the Nenana River valley, the progressive deformation of Pleistocene surfaces defines a north-vergent critically-tapered thrust wedge. The geometry of progressive uplift and folding requires a near planar, south-dipping basal thrust fault with two major north-dipping backthrusts. All three faults were active simultaneously on a scale of 10 4 yrs with slip rates of 0.25-1 mm/yr, until the late Pleistocene when we infer the retreat of glacial ice from the main axis of the Alaska Range caused a change in thrust wedge dynamics. I use the orientation of Quaternary deformation north of the Denali fault to show that strain is highly partitioned and establish geologic constraints on the regional horizontal stress orientation. North of the Denali fault, fault-normal principal shortening accommodates 3-5 mm/yr of strain transfer across the Denali fault system. Two appendices contain additional results of paleoseismic trenching and neotectonic investigations across 4 active faults near the Nenana River. It correlates philosophy and theology having in the question of God the main problem. The hypothesis of the thesis argues that the intersection of the ar-eas is productive and an original work of thought can arises from this cross. The thesis suggests the term of the fold of religion, considering the task of recogni-tion of the self within broken ontology. The reflective philosophy articulates the aporias with the ontology of the possible in existential categories, especially in terms of religious language, hope and the aporia of grace. The research utilizes the phenomenological and hermeneutical method, and it is divided into four stages: at first, introduces the relationship between philosophy and theology and the divine name as the first fold of religion. The second chapter deals with time, narrative, and the myth-poetic. The third chapter deals with the metaphorical in-terpretation of religion within the ontology of the possible. The fourth and final chapter presents the existential fold whose movement is as a philosophical spiral in the life of Ricoeur. The research is concluded on the horizon of the capable human being and the recognition of the self mediated by the fold of religion. The result will be a reflection that makes possible a better understanding of the philosophy of Ricoeur, as well as foundation for future studies on the philoso-phy of religion.

Several deformation models have been proposed for the Paraguay Belt, differing mainly in the number of deformation phases, sense of vergence and tectonic style. Structural features presented in this work indicate tectonic dominated by an initial phase of low dipping thrust sheets, followed by two progressive deformation phases. The first deformation phase (F1) is characterized by a slaty cleavage (S1), axial plane of isoclinal recumbent folds (D1) in the NE direction, with recrystallization of minerals from the greenschist facies, related to horizontal shear zones with top-to-the-SE sense of movement. The second stage shows a NW-vergence, characterized by crenulation cleavage, S0 and S1 axial planes of open folds, locally associated with reverse faults. The third deformation phase is characterized by subvertical faults and fractures in the NW direction showing sinistral movement, commonly filled by quartz veins. The collection of tectonic structures and metamorphic paragenesis described indicate that the most intense deformation, at deeper crustal level, reached the greenschist facies during F1. Accommodating significant crustal shortening through isoclinal recumbent folds and low-angle shear zones showing top-to-the SE sense of movement during a thin-skinned tectonic regime. The phase F2 showed more subtle deformation, with more competent rock types developing brittle behavior and less competent rock types developing ductile behavior, by accommodating slight shortening through normal open folds and subvertical reverse faults nucleated in shallower crustal level with vergence towards the Amazonian Craton. The third phase was less intense and shortening is accommodated in the form of fractures and subvertical sinistral faults, commonly filled by quartz veins.
