Growth on the Gold Line: Evaluating the Foothill Extension and the Potential of Transit-Oriented DevelopmentRussell, Adam E 13 May 2012 (has links)
The Gold Line Foothill Extension represents an unprecedented light rail expansion into the San Gabriel Valley from downtown Los Angeles. In examining its potential for success, transit-oriented development (TOD) appears to be an integral factor and a major opportunity to redraw growth patterns along the corridor. TOD opportunities and challenges are investigated throughout the Foothill Extension, and three towns in particular, Claremont, Monrovia, and Irwindale, are examined on the basis of their varying levels of TOD planning. The corridor features many infill sites with potential for high density development near new Gold Line stations, but implementation of some TOD sites should be delayed until improvements in the economy can create appropriate short-term demand for office and retail space.

An Evaluation of Factors Affecting Establishment and Survival of Russian Wildrye (Elymus Junceus Fisch.) on Foothill Ranges in UtahDrawe, Dale Lynn 01 May 1970 (has links)
Russian wildrye (Elymus junceus Fisch.) is a longlived perennial bunchgrass introduced to this continent from Siberia by the University of Saskatchewan in 1926 (Lawrence and Heinrichs, 1966). It is now widely distributed throughout the Northern Great Plains and Intermountain area (Figure 1). The species does well in the Northern Great Plains, but even though it is recommended for foothill ranges in the Intermountain area (Plummer, et aI, 1955), there are problems with establishment of Russian wildrye in the Intermountain area. This study was an attempt to fill in some of the gaps in the knowledge about establishment and survival of Russian wildrye on foothill ranges in Utah.

DŮM NA ÚPATÍ - MĚSTSKÝ DŮM V HISTORICKÉM CENTRU BRNA / HOUSE ON THE FOOTHILL - TOWN HOUSE IN THE HISTORICAL CENTREPetrušková, Lucie January 2013 (has links)
The place has a unique location - in between Stare Brno, where the city originated, and the historical city centre. Its triangular shape is defined by two adjoining streets, a vibrant and ancient Pekarska and much younger Anenska. It is also a kind of transition between the big noble city and a shabby, yet fairy area. The design seeks to create a complex of buildings that react to these specific features and add a new layer to the city. The first decision was to enclose this heterogeneous area. Thus a clear structure is defined in regard to both streets as well as their junction. Due to its specific location, the site is built on intensively, yet without exceeding the overall height level of the area. The mass on the north side goes gradually down and the corner forms a firm figure. In the less important street, the scale of the objects becomes smaller, thus interacting with its surroundings. The re-created St. Anna lane acts as a contemporary link between these two worlds. Moreover, it is possible to climb up from there to a public garden on the hill. Functionally, apartment buildings prevail. The corner block serves as offices and there are shops on the ground level. The lane is lined with small studios for artists and craftsman, thus giving the area a unique character.

In the grip of streets and Ann's Bakery, near the historical center of Brno, is undeveloped plot of triangular shape. Plot has a specific complex topography and heterogeneous surrounding buildings. The proposed building responds to the urban context in the area and completes currently broken block buildings. Since this is an important visual axis Street Bakery, pointing to the center of the city, is located on the corner of dominant and visually appealing block gallery. A gallery right here is his essence. The unique solution is added gallery trio. To the west is traceable to the axis of Mendel Square, where the Museum of JG Mendel. The axis on the opposite side of the street Hus, which has its premises Museum of Applied Arts and Prazak Palace under the Moravian Gallery.

Vegetation ecology of Drakensberg foothill moist grassland on Hlogoma Mountain, Underberg, KwaZulu-NatalBerruti, Sharron Marion 11 1900 (has links)
Hlogoma Mountain is a small inselberg surrounded by farms and commercial forestry in the Underberg district (KwaZulu-Natal) within the Gs10 Drakensberg Foothill Moist Grassland. As little is known about the vegetation on Hlogoma, a survey was undertaken to classify, map and describe the plant communities occurring on the inselberg. A total of 100 (16 m2) randomly stratified sample plots were placed in homogeneous vegetation units within the 117 ha study area. A TWINSPAN classification, refined by Braun-Blanquet procedures, resulted in the identification of two major communities, five communities, 12 sub-communities and four variants. All communities were described and a vegetation map constructed. Ordinations identified key environmental variables that have an impact on the vegetation at the study site. A plant species checklist was created and analysed for floristic composition; rarity and threatened species; medicinal plants; endemism; phenology; flower colour and elevation range; species richness and plant community biodiversity. A total of 467 species were identified, represented by 271 genera and 87 families. Four Red Data species and a new Aspidoglossum species were discovered. Two near-endemic genera, two endemic species and 88 near-endemic species belonging to the Drakensberg Alpine Centre were found on Hlogoma. This study showed that Hlogoma Mountain is an inselberg with high plant species richness and endemism, and is a refuge of conservation importance for biodiversity. / Environmental Sciences / M.
