Settlement of marine fouling organisms in response to novel antifouling coatingsAfsar, Anisul, Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science, UNSW January 2008 (has links)
Surfaces submerged in marine environments rapidly get colonized by marine organisms, a process known as biofouling. Fouling costs maritime industries billions of dollars annually. The most common methods of combating marine biofouling are toxin containing antifouling coatings which often have detrimental non-target environmental effects. These effects and proposed bans on harmful substances in antifouling coatings, mandates development of more environmentally friendly antifouling technologies. Of these, foul-release coatings, which minimize attachment and adhesion of fouling organisms (rather than killing them) are promising alternatives. Here I explored the utility of petroleum waxes as novel antifouling/foul-release coatings. I first investigated the responses of propagules (larvae or spores) of six common fouling organisms to wax coatings in the laboratory. A wide variation in the response of these different organisms, and in the different types of response (settlement, adhesion, etc.) by the same organism, was observed, but the most inhibitory coatings were those made from microcrystalline wax and silicone oil. However, in field trials in Sydney Harbour, paraffin waxes had the strongest antifouling performance, with activity up to one year (the trial duration). These waxes also had strong foul-release effects, with fouling that did attach mostly removed by a low pressure water jet. Composition of fouling communities on paraffin waxes differed significantly from other waxes or controls, with little or no hard fouling organisms (barnacles, bivalves) on paraffin. The mechanisms of antifouling and foul-release actions of paraffin waxes appear to be due to changes in surface properties. The surfaces of the paraffin waxes changed noticeably after 4 - 8 weeks immersion in the sea or in seawater aquaria. Antibiotic treatments showed that this change in surface appearance was due to biological (microbial) activity. Bacteria appear to remove the amorphous phase from the surface of the paraffin waxes, revealing an underlying crystalline phase, which is less affected by bacterial action. I suggest that these crystals form a microstructured ?bed of nails? of crystals of varying shapes and sizes which inhibit settlement and reduce adhesion strength of those organisms which do settle.

Revenue Incentives and Referee Propensity to Make Foul Calls in the NBA FinalsFallon-Cyr, Daniel 01 January 2017 (has links)
In this study I examine foul calls by NBA referees alongside the difference in aggressiveness of twelve NBA basketball teams as they compete for the Championship Title. I aim to identify referee biases that increase the likelihood of the NBA Finals ending in a later game due to league revenue incentives. My data consists of 91 individual NBA Finals games played between the 2001 and 2016 NBA Finals. After controlling for changes in play as well as the difference in aggressiveness, I find that NBA referee’s foul calls are more dependent on a call on the opposing team in situations with a larger series score spread. Additionally, I identify a consistent officiating bias towards the home team. My results imply an effort by the NBA to increase the probability of the series ending in a later game, possibly motivated by increased revenues for the league and all parties involved.

Distributed Temperature Sensing för kontroll av inläckage i spillvattenledningar / Using Distributed Temperature Sensing to detect infiltration and inflow in foul sewersMoa, Sandberg January 2021 (has links)
Infiltration and inflow (I/I) are common problems in the foul sewer system. A method to detect I/I that is not commonly used in Sweden is DTS, Distributed Temperature Sensing. DTS is based on continuous measurements of temperature over a predetermined distance in the sewer system. The I/I is detected as temperature differences in the temperature data that is registered in the sewer system. The measurements often take place over a couple of weeks or months in the sewer system. The aim of this project was to review previous studies where DTS was used to detect I/I in foul sewers. Data from a wastewater treatment plant in Umeå together with meteorological data were analysed to be able to visualize the problem of I/I and then suggest how DTS can be applied in Sweden. Both automated and visual analyses was performed to find if there were any relationships between wastewater temperature, wastewater flow and precipitation. The outcome was that it is possible to apply DTS in the foul sewages to detect I/I. DTS seemed to be able to detect I/I in all types of sewage material, however it is dependent on that the I/I temperature differs from the temperature of the foul sewage water. It is an expensive technique but if it is meant to be used many times to analyse bigger areas it can be worth the costs. If larger areas are to be investigated, the costs for DTS and current methods are approximately the same. At the wastewater treatment plant in Umeå, a slight relationship between wastewater temperature, wastewater flow and precipitation could be detected. The degree of dilution was calculated to 1,34 which means that about 25% of the sewage water is I/I. The conclusion from this was that I/I exists in the foul sewers in Umeå. The leakage points could not be located with this analysis. DTS could be a possible method to detect the leakage points of I/I in foul sewers. Unlike smoke tests, colouring and video-inspection of the sewers, DTS might be able to detect smaller leakage points.

"Living in truth" : moral and political intersections in Samuel Beckett, Tom Stoppard, and Václav HavelHarger, Jennifer Leigh 26 July 2011 (has links)
Often considered to be apolitical playwrights, Samuel Beckett and Tom Stoppard each dedicated dramatic works to dissident Czech playwright (and later President) Václav Havel in the late 1970s and early 1980s—during his imprisonment for his role in writing and distributing the dissident document Charter 77. These dramatic works, with a few others, collectively mark simultaneous, parallel shifts in Beckett’s and Stoppard’s careers toward uncharacteristically explicit political engagement. This report examines these works—Beckett’s Catastrophe and What Where, and Stoppard’s Every Good Boy Deserves Favor and Professional Foul—through the lens of Havel’s political philosophy, especially as expressed in his 1978 essay “The power of the powerless.” This report argues that Havel’s model of apolitical resistance to injustice, a model he calls “living in truth,” expresses humanist values that these playwrights had long affirmed in their art. Their shared moral vision, along with sympathy for Havel’s plight under a totalitarian regime that distorted language as a tool of oppression, was the catalyst for their new, direct involvement in political matters. The report establishes the historical context of the Soviet-dominated Communist regime in Czechoslovakia, along with relevant biographical and professional narratives for each figure. It then examines closely this selection of Beckett’s and Stoppard’s dramatic works and their shared thematic concerns, and demonstrates how they artistically embody and communicate Havel’s model of “living in truth.” / text

La responsabilité médicale à Madagascar : Réalités internes et proposition d'actualisation en référence au droit médical français / Medical responsibility in Madagascar : Real situations and a project of renovation referring to french lawRazafiarison, Tahiry Anja 12 October 2013 (has links)
To come up to the Malagasy society's expectations a legal act on medical responsibility should be coherent with the local conception of medical practice. In Madagascar, the public opinion is convinced that medical practice has to deal with a divine action out of the physician's control so that the legal concept of therapeutic risk is therefore accepted. The physician is only required to assume the continuity of the service and to provide his or her best care to patients. Meanwhile Malagasy culture shows an extreme compassion towards people suffering of bodily injuries mainly when these wounds result from a malpractice. To prevent a godly punishment doctors usually have to donate to their injured patient. This helps to preserve the physician's reputation and his or her relationship with the patient. Medical duty in Madagascar is more a matter of recognition of the patient's pain than a procedure of compensation. French legal system is different as it promotes the complete compensation in case of malpractice. However, both legal systems are similar when proposing alternative process to resolve conflicts.
