Protecting Usonia: A homeowner's and site manager's resource for understanding and addressing common preservation concerns in Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian home

January 2018 (has links)
The primary goal of this thesis is to provide owners and stewards of Usonian homes with as many possible resources to make informed maintenance and conservation decisions, believing that in giving these resources to those most involved with the process these extant Usonian homes will be preserved to the highest degree of integrity. It was vital that most of the information come from homeowner’s themselves, as they have the most current, in-depth and practical knowledge about common preservation concerns in the Usonian style of home. As a part of this goal first hand knowledge from the Usonian homeowners were collected, analyzed, and synthesized to develop a usable resource based on their experiences and additional research and recommendation from professionals in the field. The secondary goal of this project is to contribute to the current database of the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy on Usonian homes. The results of the survey will be included in the database and will contribute to their mission. The Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy works to provide in-depth resources for homeowner’s as well as serves as one of the premier advocates for the preservation of Wright’s extant buildings. As such, they offer extensive practical preservation resources for all Wright homeowners. This paper, and the data collected from the survey, will serve to increase their knowledge base and, therefore, their ability to provide more in-depth resources to all homeowners, stewards, and scholars. / 0 / SPK / specialcollections@tulane.edu

Perspectives on the Historio-sociological Novel : Frank Norris' The Octopus

O'Shea, Timothy Thomas 05 1900 (has links)
As an historio-sociological novel The Octopus is important because it synthesizes several features of late nineteenth century America, especially naturalism and the political preponderance of the Southern Pacific railroad. An analysis of this novel provides a better understanding of its features and adds a dimension to the perspective of history.

Arvet efter Josef Frank : Om en kulturhistorisk produktutveckling och hantverkarens roll i en designprocess / The legacy from Josef Frank : A study about cultural product development and the craftsman’s role in the design process

Svinhufvud, Magnus January 2016 (has links)
In my thesis I write about what I as a cabinet maker can contribute with in a design process and construction process of a piece of furniture. From past experience there is often a lack of expertise among the architects and designers in areas like construction and material knowledge at design studios. I have in cooperation with Svenskt Tenn and their range manager chosen a sketch by Josef Frank from the archives, a sketch that never left the drawing table. Josef Frank, trained as an architect, was not a cabinet maker and therefore he didn’t have the same knowledge about construction as, for example, the famous cabinet maker Carl Malmsten. This you can clearly see in Franks sketches. The sketches that he drew leave you with a lot of questions that you need to find the answers to before the manufacturing can begin and this is my thesis is about. It’s up to me as the cabinet maker together with the knowledge of Svenskt Tenns range managers about Josef Frank and his design to create a piece of furniture that is as close as possible to Frank’s sketch and ideas. The result of my work is a prototype of a table that has been developed after analysis of a simple sketch. I have identified and solved a number of problems such as; materials, the appearances and construction of the table. I have from my studies realized the importance of the cabinet maker’s knowledge in a design process. With this knowledge I can help and guide the designer/outsourcer/producer forward to a more sustainable and better developed product.

The Many Functions of Commercial Banking: Liquidity Management, Mergers, and Retail Lending

Moe, Todd Gregory 01 December 2018 (has links)
The main objective of this dissertation is to provide insight into commercial bank decisionmaking in the United States. To this end, commercial bank behavior is explored in three separate essays. Chapter 1 examines the liquidity adjustment behavior of U.S. commercial banks from 1993-2006. A panel vector autoregressive framework is employed to estimate the dynamic responses of bank loans and liquid assets to a variety of bank funding shocks. Orthogonalized impulse responses reveal that banks respond to disruptions in funding by extending less credit and hoarding liquid assets. This paper also highlights functional differences between small and large banks. Large banks generally have access to capital markets and other external funding sources; small banks do not. As a result, small banks are more sensitive to funding disruptions. Balance sheet liquidity is also vitally important for small banks. Small, liquid banks are able to continue lending in response to disruptions in core deposits while illiquid banks are forced to cut lending. Chapter 2 investigates the effects of bank mergers on deposit growth over the period 1994- 2005. The present study differentiates between mergers initiated by small and large banks. We find empirical evidence of deposit runoff to go along with the anecdotal evidence known to the banking community. Contrary to expectation, mergers initiated by large commercial banks are able maintain their deposit levels while mergers between small banks generally lose deposit funding. Chapter 3 analyzes the impact of the Dodd-Frank Act on key segments of the mortgage market. Error correction models of the residential real estate loan share and the non-jumbo loan share indicate that the Dodd-Frank Act coincided with a dramatic decline in both loan share measures. For example, the Dodd-Frank Act had a negative, long-run effect on the non-jumbo loan share for large commercial banks; reducing the non-jumbo loan share by 15.13%. Moreover, the residential real estate share declined by 8.79%. These findings are consistent with commercial banks re-allocating their loan portfolios in favor of high dollar C&I loans, commercial real estate loans, and jumbo mortgages in response to the increased fixed compliance costs of originating loans under the Dodd-Frank Act.
