Dropouts from literacy : an analysis of the meanings which adult learners attach to the fact of abandoning their training programme

Gale, Faith Margaret Nola January 1998 (has links)
Summary in English. / When considering their dropout, many described experiences of being a misfit, or feeling uncomfortable with discourse practices in which they were expected to engage. Some had logistical difficulties in attending, such as transport or small children, but even greater than these was the fact that they had been disappointed. These learners believe the "literacy myth" that literacy, as a set of skills one can acquire, will result in significant improvements in one's life. They also equate literacy with education, and although they experience none of the benefits that are supposed to accrue to the literate, they continue to say that they believe in its power. However, in practice, attendance at adult centres is relatively poor in comparison with numbers of potential students, those termed "illiterate." It may be deduced that adult "illiterates" regard literacy as some kind of "saviour", a panacea for all ills. Even if it is not directly accessed, the fact of its existence and the notion of its power is enough to provide hope for a better future and comfort in hard times.

[en] FUNCTIONAL LITERACY AND THE UNDERSTANDING OF CELL PHONE PRINTED PROMOTIONS / [pt] O LETRAMENTO FUNCIONAL O ENTENDIMENTO DA COMUNICAÇÃO EM ANÚNCIOS DE CELULAR

MARIANA BRAGA NOGUEIRA CUPOLILLO 17 November 2010 (has links)
[en] This thesis focuses on the type of language used in advertisements and publications for cell phones and its impact as a source of information for the consumer behavior. These publication instruments can actually be not understood by about 1/3 of the population, which is considered functional illiterate, but by others that don’t understand technical languages, jargons, and foreign terms. This fact can result in large financial losses and misapplication of the marketing communication tools. The research at issue was inspired by S-TOHFLA, which is an international test of functional health literacy of patients used in the health care setting. It measured the ability of the respondents to understand aspects and attributes used in press media advertisements about cell phones. Thereto, a test was inspired by the Cloze procedure which consists in fulfilling gaps with the most appropriate word, containing four multiple choice options for each question. That test was administrated to 202 respondents, and the answers contributed to assess their comprehension about the theme. The results point out that the respondents, according to their level of income, literacy, age and gender, have different levels of understanding the subject - for example, the higher the level of literacy of the respondent, the higher his or her score in the test. That reinforces the idea of reassess the clarity, intelligibility and the specificity of these promotional materials. Finally, this study stresses out the importance of messages and elements, used in advertisements, to become more sensitive to the literacy of different audiences and consequently, to be more effective in the advertising community. This study clarifies the latent need of changes for the marketing communication.

Problems of adult learners in adult basic education : a psycho-educational perspective

Mkhwanazi, Samson Qedusizi Nicholas 06 1900 (has links)
This study investigated the physical affective, cognitive and volitional problems of the learner in adult basic education (ABE) with reference to the learner's relationship towards the tutor, the learning content, the self, and family and friends. The research design provided for a literature study of ABE in South Africa, as well as the personhood and relationships of the ABE learner. This was done to arrive at a research hypothesis concerning the relative impact of various categories of problems on the ABE learner. The empirical summary had both quantitative and qualitative components. It was found that ABE learners are influenced by the following factors, listed in order of impact: affective problems; cognitive problems; problems related to the learning content, physical problems and problems related to family and friends. Positive fmdings were that volitional problems and problems related to tutors were relatively less significant. In its recommendations the study emphasises the crucial role of, and need for professionally trained adult basic educators who can deal effectively with the personal and contextual problems of ABE learners. Moreover, the typical perseverance of ABE learners demands the establishment of excellent and responsive infrastructure for ABE provision, inter alia in provincial education departments. / Psychology of Education / M. The role of technikons with regard to social and economic upliftment of communities, with reference to the Eastern Cape Technikon

Moodly, Adele Leah 08 1900 (has links)
Technikons were established in order to meet the need for skilled labour in the field of Engineering and Technology. Yet, within the Transkei it is found that there is a greater need for literacy training as a means of contributing to social and economic upliftment as technological advancement cannot take place within an illiterate society. As the Eastern Cape Technikon is based within the Transkei, a challenge is put to this institution to meet the needs of its surrounding community. Thus besides providing technologically -orientated education, the question is put as to how the Technikon could address illiteracy in the area. A study of countries which have addressed these issues is made and an investigation into the problem within the area is carried out. Based on conclusions drawn from these, recommendations are made. These do not necessarily pertain to all technikons but can be considered when approaching the issue of literacy/illiteracy . / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Comparative Education)

Proměny konceptu gramotnosti / Changes of the Literacy Concept

Lišková, Martina January 2014 (has links)
This paper treats changes of the literacy concept. It presents five most important conceptual frameworks, such as literacy rate, functional literacy, Freirean framework, New literacy studies and literacies of information. Literacy can be defined as the ability to read and write, as a set of basic skills or as competencies. Because of OECD's influence, the functional literacy concept is the most powerful one. Literacy involves a continuum and is oriented mostly towards economical outputs. Influence of OECD is supported by the international surveys IALS, ALL, PIAAC, PISA and LAMP. The surveys TIMSS and PIRLS organized by IEA are influential as well. This paper summarizes the most important critical reviews to the OECD's methodology and to the interpretation of the results. It also comments current activities of OECD, UNESCO and European union. Based on the socio- cultural framework, it brings in several recommendations how states and organizations could approach literacy and its assessment. The paper relies on the documents of UNESCO, OECD, IEA, the World Bank, the European union and on the published works of foreign and local experts.

Show the UEA formation EJA training course and the agreements signed between the federal and state governments. This is a qualitative approach research. The first chapter deals with the EJA in the global agenda, interests of neoliberal politics, reflections and propositions. The second presents the UEA, its proposal of literacy and training for subjects of the EJA, agreements and pacts for the development of these actions. The third chapter talking about the teacher training course at EJA, which is to be a teacher today in dealing with building a curriculum that respects the diversity of EJA. The fourth and last chapter brings the subjects' speech and the hope of an emancipatory curriculum. The focus of the research crosses the geographical frontier stripping the cultural frontier, with a cut in the possible curriculum built together with the orphans of the Letters of Rewriting the Future Program (PLRF). The theoretical basis is based on the contributions of Karel Kosik, Paulo Freire, Samuel Benchimol, Triviños, Lowy, Gimeno Sacristán, Arroyo, Feldmann and Antônio Chizzotti, as well as official documents, "Letters of the Amazon" reports of activities of the curricular subjects and indicators of use of the teaching practice. I considered that the proposal of extension in literacy of the University of the State of Amazonas / UEA, for the education of educators and orphans of the letters, in spite of the positive results for the education in Amazonas and insertion of young people and adults in the official education and, educators continuing in the construction of new knowledge with specializations, masters and even doctor degree, the policy for the EJA needs to advance in the perspective of liberating popular education, needs to be fertilized through problem situations and analysis of possibilities and limits, characteristics of a border region and Amazonian .
