A roupa e a morte / The clothing and the deathGlenda Maíra Silva Melo 07 October 2015 (has links)
This research conducts a study on the function of burial clothes in our culture. The purpose of this research is to identify the role that clothing plays dead in our culture. The importance of this study is to increase understanding of our attitudes and our behavior in relation to clothing. The functionalist theory developed by Malinowski was adopted as theoretical framework and the non-organized free interview was employed as a research tool. Interviews were conducted with seamstresses who were born between the 20s and 40s and who now reside in the city of Ituverava - São Paulo. The choice of this social group was given - in the first place - because of different perception that this category has in relation to clothing: the professional performance of these women allowed them to acquire a specialized knowledge of fabrics, prints, cutting techniques, sewing techniques , finishing techniques, naming parts and modeling processes; knowledge considered essential for the further development of interviews. The date of birth and place stipulated aimed at the identification of women who became economically active during a time and in a region where the vast majority of the clothes were produced by local seamstresses in the absence of manufacturing industries in the region. The data collected during the interview were recorded with the help of a tape recorder and analyzed according to the functionalist perspective

Experiencing Death and Loss Through School ShootingsGordy, Alyx, Warlick, Hettie, Wiggins, Madison G, Lawton, Kasey 12 April 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this work was to investigate experiencing death and loss through school shootings from a developmental time period and theory-based perspective. This topic was chosen based on recent media coverage and controversy surrounding school shootings. This research looks at school shootings from the perspective of the Structural Functionalism Theory and applies the theory to recent situations of school shootings around the United States. From this theory, the developmental timing of loss following a school shooting was taken into account by observing the stages of development in which loss may have occurred and how each child may react to a school shooting based on their development. This research concluded that school shootings can extremely disruptive to the structure and the functioning of individuals in many roles within the school and community.

Daylight in Schools, An Assesement of Daylight in Juan O’Gorman’s Schools in Mexico CityPérez Villaseñor, Sergio January 2022 (has links)
Mexico has invested many resources in education ever since the enactment of the 1917 Constitution, where the government committed to providing quality education to every Mexican. Investment has increased over time (INEGI, 1994), but the results have not shown the level of commitment, since Mexico is ranked 32nd out of 34 members in the 2021 OECD Education indicators report (OECD, 2021) as well as falling behind in education level and quality (CONEVAL, 2022). This study focuses on the schools by Juan O’Gorman in 1932 and the Daylight conditions. Considering his methodology and theory adapted to the historical context around him, and the uses required for the building type. This thesis centers on two typical classrooms used in the schools built by Juan O’Gorman. The main goal of this thesis is to answer the question, Do the classrooms following the Functional Modular System by Juan O’Gorman perform as an efficient place to provide education? Does it fulfill the “basic daylight needs” of a primary school? How do the schools use the Functional Modular System performance in today’s context using current international lighting standards? The analysis of the 1933 schools by O’Gorman, showed that there is a need to adjust the codes to match the geographic location of Mexico. Since the results obtained showed that the minimum required levels in sDA, UDI and ASE are met with minimum effort, but the higher thresholds are exceeded. Special attention to glare and direct Sunlight is required to prevent the negative effects of daylight in work and study spaces such as eyestrain, and veiling reflections caused by reading surfaces (Dubois et al., 2019). Further studies are required to analyze the perception of the space, and the academic performance of the users to find the possible consequences of the high glare and contrast levels found in this thesis.

The inevitability of reductionism in the mind-Body problem : Finding convergence between functionalism and Type-Identity PhysicalismNkenguruke, Valery January 2023 (has links)
Type identity theory is a theory within physicalism that maintains that types of mental states or processes are identical to types of states or processes in the brain. This would imply mental types can’t be encountered in physical structures other than the brain. But it seems to be the case that other biological creatures with different physical processes going on in their brain are able to experience a mental state such as pain. Even our brain, with its ability to undergo modification, functionally and structurally, in response to experience or injury, an ability called neuroplasticity, seems to have the ability to instantiate or realize the same mental state by two different neural events. This is the multiple realizability nature of the mental, that challenge type identity theory, but that functionalism seems to account for. Multiple realizability seems to provide a plausible basis for the irreducibility of mind to brain, and thus a good argument for why they should not be considered identical. I argue that when type identity theory claims that types of mental states or processes are identical to types of states or processes in the brain, this should be understood as claiming that types of mental states are identical to types of mechanisms in the brain, by which I mean types of interaction between fundamental particles that comprises the brain. I argue that two physical structures realizing the same mental state must be relevantly similar in the way their respective fundamental particles are interacting with one another. In other words, that similarity in function implies similarity in the way the physical realizers are organized. Therefore, the multiple realizability nature of mental states shouldn’t render them irreducible or non-identical to specific types of interactions fundamental particles.

One Light to fit them all. Rethinking Luminaire Design, Reusability - Re•adjustabilitySkouros, Athanasios January 2023 (has links)
A luminaire’s primary purpose is to provide visibility into a space, but also to serve as an aesthetic object for it. When switched off, luminaires maintain their presence as forms and when switched on they transform places by creating or vanishing different shadows. For years luminaire designers are trying to tame the light emitted from the light bulb, an archetypal component of a great literal and metaphorical significance for the human his-tory. The era of LED’s sets no limits of light source forms, intensity, color temperature, lighting color or color rendering index. Space is now the primal factor and the luminaire forms and adjusts around it. By examining the connection between luminaires and space, functionalism and how great designers approached the topic, a luminaire design tool will be explored connecting past, present and possible future technology advancement. With the above tool, a prototype model will be created with the intention to experiment with adjustability and adaptability into space. The main goal will be the re-search of a primal form for the design tool that serves as a multipurpose solution while retaining high quality levels. Well-being and creativity as well as responsible consumption and production are connected with the de-sign process.
