This dissertation is an analytical study of two very influential conceptions of consciousness in contemporary philosophy of mind. The main focus of this research is twofold. First, it intends to describe both John Searle's and Daniel Dennett approach on consciousness, and, second, to expose Searle's criticism to Dannett's functionalist approach. Both approaches will be described and evaluated, and the relevant differences between these two authors will be put in contrast. In not providing a concept that includes the qualitative characteristic of consciousness, it will be argued that Dennett's functionalism cannot explain human conscious experiences. His philosophy of mind also cannot solve the problem of other minds, since the concept of consciousness exposed by Dennett does not differentiate conscious human beings from unconscious zombies.

Gramaticalização de verbos: o verbo \'esperar\' no português culto de São Paulo / Grammaticalization of verbs: the verb esperar in Sao Paulo\'s cultured portugueseSantos, Elaine Cristina Silva 06 May 2009 (has links)
It is assumed that grammaticalization is the passage from a lexical to a grammatical item or from a less grammatical to a more grammatical one. We link this research to a theoretical framework of the Grammaticalization in a functionalist approach, we also argue about the linguistic change undertaken by the verb esperar (wait) until it reaches its functional standard of a conversational marker that is formed by the expression espera aí. A starting point, we elect a sample of the Paulistas (from São Paulo) standard spoken language material proceeding from the CAPH (Center of Support to the Research in History - FFLCH-USP), from the midia-library of the IEA (Institute of Advanced Studies) and the Project NURC/SP (Project Cultured Urban Norm of São Paulo) organized interviews. We evidence the discursive role of the interlocutor as the trigger for the rising of the more innovative functional standard. This dissertation is linked to the Group to Research Portuguese Grammatical Change - Grammaticalization (CNPq-USP).

[pt] REDAÇÕES DO ENSINO MÉDIO: UMA LEITURA POR VIAS FUNCIONAIS DE ENUNCIAÇÃO / [en] SECONDARY EDUCATION ESSAYS: A FUNCTIONAL READING OF ENUNCIATIONHENRIQUE CLAUDIO DOS REIS 29 October 2012 (has links)
[en] The aim of this study is to argue that the essays of students from secondary education can deserve a reading different from the one customarily made, supported by normative grammar. It includes teachers’ understanding that, to start with, the student’s text is a timely and possible expression of an individual who, through language (Bakhtin, 1979), is in an evident process of formation of his conscience as a citizen, whose greatest prerrogative is to be the owner of his destination. This reading can be done by multiple paths: the argument latent in words (Koch, 2002; Abreu Suarez, 2000) or in the instantiation by which they occur along with others. I highlight here the choice of verbs, by which processes are created, allowing growth of line of argument (Halliday AND Matthiessen, 2004), within principles of coherence and cohesion, and also promoters of argumentativity in plots that the text is working out (Koch, 2005; Favero, 2006). My corpus consists of my students’ essays, from a public school in Baixada Fluminense, who answered the question / theme posed by me: Is the favela a place of bandits? Based on functional-systemic linguistics, I analyze the texts in a non-grammaticalized way ( grammar in the traditional sense), in which the text stands on its functionalism, as an entity that validates its exterior, its semantics, context and resulting argumentative phraseology. This analysis indicates that some texts are more elaborate than others: some achieve greater cohesion than others, which present disconnected sentences. This itself deserves a discussion because they were produced by students who are about to graduate as elementary school teachers. I problematize the context of secondary education of public school, presented by some commentators and also by statistical data for measuring progress or setbacks in its development. I conclude by reaffirming the role of the Portuguese language teacher. If he/she deals with students’ essays as more than just a curricular activity, he/she can be the main agent of students’ identity
awareness-raising process. He/she can help them see that they are a voice to be unquestionably firmed.

The Concepts of Capitalism and Democracy in Implied Power Relations: Fractionation Philosophy and TheoryBaker, Randy 26 May 1993 (has links)
This research proposes that it is possible to meaningfully examine the differences between subjects' perceptions of concepts at two different levels of analysis. The central theory, called "fractionation", is derived from structuration theory. The theory suggests that there is an important and particular difference between subjects' perceptions of key concepts at the value (abstract) level, as differentiated from the policy (action) level. The key concepts provided here are capitalism and democracy. Three major stages of data gathering and analysis were conducted. The first stage, carried out in several phases, surveyed 337 college students to gather words commonly associated ·with two key concepts: capitalism and democracy. These words were then used as items in a multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis. The results were used to represent the relationship between the two key concepts at the value level of analysis. The second stage consisted of gathering policy fragments from two mainstream newspapers. Television advertising was selected as the focal point of this search, to represent one area where democracy and capitalism co-exist. Fragments were taken from the newspapers and compiled into "fragment topics", or pieces of argument about the relationship between capitalism and democracy in television advertising. Stage III was carried out by surveying seventy-three subjects who were presented with the argumentative statements developed in each fragment topic. An assessment was made of the relationship between capitalism and democracy at the policy level based on the argument choices made by the subjects. Stage I resulted in a clear distinction between the two key concepts of capitalism and democracy at the value level, while Stage III resulted in a conflict between the two at the policy level. The comparison of results between the first stage of the research and the third stage represents the fractionation that was being sought.

College ROTC Cadets' Perceptions of Gender Fairness With Selective Service RegistrationPeavie, Barrett 01 January 2018 (has links)
The U.S. Selective Service System currently excludes women from the talent pool based upon the DoD's 1981 ban on women in direct combat. The DoD has removed the exclusion and has implemented a gender-neutral policy standard for assignments. However, there appears to be a misalignment of national security policy as it relates to gender fairness that impacts Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) participants in particular. Using Durkheim's functionalism theory as the theoretical foundation, the purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine institutional differences in policies regarding justice and gender among ROTC participants who are between 18 and 26 years of age in a Middle Atlantic University. Data were acquired through 10 interviews with ROTC members. These data were inductively coded and then subjected to Moustakas and Van Kaam's thematic analysis procedure. Key results included evidence that current policy is misaligned with gender enfranchisement, effective social change requires inclusion of both genders in registration, and a standards-based approach to equality is important to both men and women. This group of future military leaders wants the repeal of male only registration and the inclusion of female citizens as an expression of full citizenship and increased social equity. Further research using this methodological framework in different geographical regions and among different generations could add depth to the current body of knowledge. The implications for positive social change with new Selective Service registration policy would change the process towards registering all young adult citizens in the event of a national emergency which would be the codification of fairness and value for all citizens in public policy.

Grammatiken i praktiken : Om gymnasieelevers förmåga att tillämpa grammatiska kunskaper i muntlig kommunikation / Grammar in practice : Study about High School Students' Ablility to Apply Grammar in Oral CommunicationStark, Sara January 2006 (has links)

This paper sets out to examine to what extent French grammar teaching contributes to the students’ practical, oral skills. Are the students familiar with the grammatical system without knowing how to apply it orally in practice? The paper contains a theoretical background and an empirical survey. One quantitative and one qualitative method have been applied in the survey. 52 questionnaires have been completed and 6 High School students’ interviews have been carried out. Only 15 % of the surveyed students state that they completely approve with the statement that they can apply their grammatical knowledge in oral production. This shows that the teaching of grammar seems to contribute to the students’ oral skills to a relatively small extent. The result also suggests that there is a larger emphasis on theoretical explanations than on practice in grammar teaching. One of the problems seems to be that the practicing of grammar mainly is in written form. To reach the aims for communicative skills set in the syllabi for modern languages a functional method is suggested, which emphasises on meaning and includes oral practice of grammar.
/

Purpose/Aim: The purpose of this essay is to see how the media, through the newspaper, "Vi föräldrar”, produces family and parental roles, and to investigate how the image changed over time.

Material/Method: The material consists of a number of selected texts from the years 1968, 1988 and 2008. The method used is a discourse analysis based on the three level model by Norman Fairclough. The three levels are the text, the discourse practise and the sociocultural practise. In this study two of the levels, text and sociocultural practise, are used in analysing the texts.

Main results: Family and parenting in the texts from 1968 can be linked to the structural functionalist theory in which the core family is central and women and men are assigned to specific roles. I have chosen to call the contents of the texts of 1968 a "core family discourse." The feminist approach has influenced the content in the texts from 1988 which I call a “gender discourse”. The individualization of the late modern period has resulted in freedom for the individual without specific gender roles or traditional family frameworks, which are evident in the texts from 2008. I have therefore chosen to refer to the 2008 texts as a "lifestyle discourse".

The Trade and Security Interactions Between EU and ASEANLin, Yen-Chun 01 July 2011 (has links)
After the Cold war, the economic and political cooperations between the regions has gradually replaced the relations between individual countries. European Union and ASEAN are the two regional orginazations in Eurasia which interacte and cooperate through these three organizations: Asia-Europe Meeting, ASEAN Regional Forum, and EU-ASEAN Ministerial Meetings. This thesis is based on neo-functionalism to analyze the cooperation between EU and ASEAN, and study the process of the ramification effects on the sectors of natural resources of EU and ASEAN, and the possible ¡§spill-over¡¨ effect to political and security cooperations. The result of this thesis could be provided as the suggessions for the government of Taiwan making decisions on the foreign policy.
