Palmprint Recognition Based On 2-d Gabor FiltersKonuk, Baris 01 January 2007 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis work, a detailed analysis of biometric technologies has been done and a new palmprint recognition algorithm has been implemented. The proposed algorithm
is based on 2-D Gabor filters. The developed algorithm is first tested on The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Palmprint Database in terms of accuracy, speed and template size. Then a scanner is integrated into the developed algorithm in order to acquire palm images / in this way an online palmprint recognition system has been developed. Then a small palmprint database is formed via this system in Middle East
Technical University. Results on this new database have also shown the success of the developed algorithm.

Gabor and wavelet analysis with applications to Schatten class integral operatorsBishop, Shannon Renee Smith 19 March 2010 (has links)
This thesis addresses four topics in the area of applied harmonic analysis. First, we show that the affine densities of separable wavelet frames affect the frame properties. In particular, we describe a new relationship between the affine densities, frame bounds and weighted admissibility constants of the mother wavelets of pairs of separable wavelet frames. This result is also extended to wavelet frame sequences. Second, we consider affine pseudodifferential operators, generalizations of pseudodifferential operators that model wideband wireless communication channels. We find two classes of Banach spaces, characterized by wavelet and ridgelet transforms, so that inclusion of the kernel and symbol in appropriate spaces ensures the operator is Schatten p-class. Third, we examine the Schatten class properties of pseudodifferential operators. Using Gabor frame techniques, we show that if the kernel of a pseudodifferential operator lies in a particular mixed modulation space, then the operator is Schatten p-class. This result improves existing theorems and is sharp in the sense that larger mixed modulation spaces yield operators that are not Schatten class. The implications of this result for the Kohn-Nirenberg symbol of a pseudodifferential operator are also described. Lastly, Fourier integral operators are analyzed with Gabor frame techniques. We show that, given a certain smoothness in the phase function of a Fourier integral operator, the inclusion of the symbol in appropriate mixed modulation spaces is sufficient to guarantee that the operator is Schatten p-class.

New approaches to automatic 3-D and 2-D 3-D face recognitionJahanbin, Sina 01 June 2011 (has links)
Automatic face recognition has attracted the attention of many research institutes, commercial industries, and government agencies in the past few years
mainly due to the emergence of numerous applications, such as surveillance, access control to secure facilities, and airport screening. Almost all of the research on the early days of face recognition was focused on using 2-D (intensity/portrait) images
of the face. While several sophisticated 2-D solutions have been proposed, unbiased evaluation studies show that their collective performance remains unsatisfactory, and degrades significantly with variations in lighting condition, face position,
makeup, or existence of non-neutral facial expressions. Recent developments in
3-D imaging technology has made cheaper, quicker and more reliable acquisition of 3-D facial models a reality. These 3-D facial models contain information about
the anatomical structure of the face that remains constant under variable lighting conditions, facial makeup, and pose variations. Thus, researchers are considering to utilize 3-D structure of the face alone or in combination with 2-D information to
alleviate inherent limitations of 2-D images and attain better performance.
Published 3-D face recognition algorithms have demonstrated promising results confirming the effectiveness of 3-D facial models in dealing with the above mentioned factors contributing to the failure of 2-D face recognition systems. However,
the majority of these 3-D algorithms are extensions of conventional 2-D approaches,
where intensity images are simply replaced by 3-D models rendered as
range images. These algorithms are not specifically tailored to exploit abundant geometric and anthropometric clues available in 3-D facial models.
In this dissertation we introduce innovative 3-D and 2-D+3-D facial measurements (features) that effectively describe the geometric characteristics of the corresponding faces. Some of the features described in this dissertation, as well as
many features proposed in the literature are defined around or between meaningful facial landmarks (fiducial points). In order to reach our goal of designing an accurate
automatic face recognition system, we also propose a novel algorithm combining 3-D (range) and 2-D (portrait) Gabor clues to pinpoint a number of points with meaningful anthropometric definitions with significantly better accuracies than those achievable using a single modality alone.
This dissertation is organized as follows. In Chapter 1, various biometric modalities are introduced and the advantages of the facial biometrics over other
modalities are discussed. The discussion in Chapter 1 is continued with introduction
of the face recognition’s modes of operation followed by some current and potential future applications. The problem statement of this dissertation is also included in this chapter. In Chapter 2, an extensive review of the successful 2-D, 3-D, and 2-D+3-D face recognition algorithms are provided. Chapter 3 presents the details of our innovative 3-D and 2-D+3-D face features, as well as our accurate fiducial point detection algorithm. Conclusions and directions for future extensions are presented
in Chapter 4. / text

Motion Estimation Using Complex Discrete Wavelet TransformSari, Huseyin 01 January 2003 (has links) (PDF)
The estimation of optical flow has become a vital research field in image sequence
analysis especially in past two decades, which found applications in many fields such as
stereo optics, video compression, robotics and computer vision. In this thesis, the complex
wavelet based algorithm for the estimation of optical flow developed by Magarey and
Kingsbury is implemented and investigated.
The algorithm is based on a complex version of the discrete wavelet transform (CDWT),
which analyzes an image through blocks of filtering with a set of Gabor-like kernels with
different scales and orientations. The output is a hierarchy of scaled and subsampled
orientation-tuned subimages. The motion estimation algorithm is based on the relationship
between translations in image domain and phase shifts in CDWT domain, which is satisfied
by the shiftability and interpolability property of CDWT. Optical flow is estimated by using
this relationship at each scale, in a coarse-to-fine (hierarchical) manner, where information
from finer scales is used to refine the estimates from coarser scales.
The performance of the motion estimation algorithm is investigated with various image
sequences as input and the effects of the options in the algorithm like curvature-correction,
interpolation kernel between levels and some parameter values like confidence threshold
iv
maximum number of CDWT levels and minimum finest level of detail are also experimented
and discussed.
The test results show that the method is superior to other well-known algorithms in
estimation accuracy, especially under high illuminance variations and additive noise.

A metodologia proposta é então testada, utilizandose imagens sintéticas e real.

Estas segmentações ocorrem ao nível do píxel, com ótimos resultados, principalmente após a uniformização da área através de processos morfológicos / Abstract: In this work it is introduced improvements in robustness of FingerCode method to recognize fingerprints. In the FingerCode the texture of fingerprint oriented components are extracted by a bank of directional Gabor filters. After that, the oriented components are tessellated and a value is computed for each sector. This set of values constitutes the attribute vector. Finally, the absolute difference mean between the two attribute vectors is computed that gives the similarity between two fingerprints. New solutions were tested; among them the best results were obtained by: attribute values replacement by a non-linear function, attribute values weighting by statistical characteristics of spatial distribution of values, and the calculus of statistical measures extracted from the difference distribution histograms. These functions presented a significant gain, mainly in the case of optical sensors with an improvement about 45% in EER. Another contribution presented was a new fast implementation of the 2D Gabor filter, which constitutes in a sinusoidal wave modulated by a Gaussian envelope. The 2D image filtering by a bank of 2D Gabor filters is one of the most expensive stage of image processing. In the new solution proposed, the 2D Gabor filter is separated in two orthogonal 1D Gabor filters, for this the Gaussian envelope must obey the condition of being circular. Processing with the separated filter is faster than the non-separated filter, and the gain improves as the size of image or filter increases. Also it was developed new segmentation techniques: based on mathematical morphology, and based on Gabor filters. Those segmentations occur at pixel level, with good results, mostly after the area regularization with morphological processes / Mestrado / Engenharia de Computação / Mestre em Engenharia Elétrica
