Laser and Fourier transform spectroscopy of gas phase molecules.

Laser and Fourier transform spectroscopy were used to study a variety of gas phase molecules. A series of calcium and strontium monoalkoxides, CaOR and SrOR [R=H, CH₃, CH₂CH₃, CH(CH₃)₂, CH₂CH₂CH₃, CH₂(CH₂)₂CH₃, CH₂(CH₃)CH₂CH₃ and C(CH₃)₃] was studied by laser induced fluorescence and laser excitation techniques. The A - X and B - X electronic transitions were recorded. Calcium and strontium monocyclopentadienide, CaCp and SrCp, were produced in a Broida oven and the spectra were recorded at low resolution by laser techniques. The geometry of these molecules is like an "open-faced sandwich", with C₅ᵥ symmetry. The A²Π - X²Σ⁺ and B²Σ⁺ - X²Σ⁺ transitions of calcium and strontium monoisocyanate, CaNCO and SrNCO, were recorded for the first time. The spectra are interpreted as arising from a molecule with linear, ionic Sr⁺ - ⁻NCO structure. The 0-0 band of the A - X transition of SrNCO was recorded at high resolution and rotationally analyzed. The use of a 0.64 m monochromator, acting as a narrow bandpass filter, was necessary for recording the spectra and enabled the correct assignment of the rotational lines. By comparing the molecular constants of SrNCO with related molecules, the NCO⁻ ligand was found to be nitrogen bonding to the strontium atom. The Sr-N bond length was estimated to be 2.26 A in the ground state. The rotational analysis of the 0-0 band of the A²E₁/₂ - X²A₁ transition of the SrOCH₃ free radical has been carried out by laser excitation spectroscopy. The SrOCH₃ molecule was found to have C₃ᵥ symmetry with a Sr-O bond length of 2.12 A. There was no evidence of a Jahn-Teller effect in the A²E state. This work is the first high-resolution analysis of a metal alkoxide molecule. The rotationally cool (30 K) spectrum of the 0-0 vibrational band of the A²Δ - X²Π electronic transition for the diatomic free radical CCl was recorded using a Fourier transform spectrometer. The first rotational lines of the six strongest branches were observed, and transitions in three other branches were also detected. The CCl radical was produced in a corona-excited supersonic expansion source.

Excitation processes within an inductively coupled plasma as a function of pressure and related studies.

Spectroscopic investigations have been carried out on an argon inductively coupled plasma operating at non-atmospheric pressure. The relationship between torch pressure and a number of plasma operating characteristics was explored for torch pressures between 100 and 3000 torr. The plasma operating characteristics examined include observed analyte emission intensities, electron densities, ion to atom ratios, and the deviation of plasma conditions from local thermodynamic equilibrium. The effect of pressure on the observed analyte emission intensities was found to include factors in addition to the change in density of species within the torch. Emission lines originating from ions and atoms with high ionization potentials (greater than 7 eV) increased in intensity with increasing torch pressure, in excess of that predicted by the increase in density of species present. Conversely, emission lines originating from atoms of low ionization potential decreased in intensity with increasing torch pressure despite the increase in density. The results of the spatial determination of electron densities and ion to atom ratios indicate that excitation conditions within the central channel of the plasma are shifted towards conditions of local thermodynamic equilibrium as the pressure within the torch is increased. In addition, it is possible to obtain improved limits of detection by optimizing the torch pressure for the analyte element of interest.

A coincidence has been observed between H(2S) and H⁺ fragments resulting from the bombardment of H₂ with 100 eV electrons. A significant source of this coincidence is believed to be the 2sσ(g) state of H₂⁺. The time-of-flight (TOF) distribution of H(2S) fragments from the 2sσ(g) state was measured and converted to the kinetic energy distribution from which the potential energy of the 2sσ(g) state in the Franck-Condon region was constructed. The result is in good agreement with a published calculation.

Laser spectroscopy of strontium-sulfide and alkaline earth monoborohydrides

Three gas phase alkaline earth molecules were analyzed using dye laser spectroscopy. The A¹Σ⁺ - X¹Σ⁺ transition of gas phase SrS was studied with high resolution techniques. The 0-0, 0-1, 1-1, 2-1, 3-0, 3-2, 4-1, 5-1, and 5-2 bands were rotationally analyzed and spectroscopic constants were determined. The A¹Σ⁺ state was extensively perturbed. Ground state (X¹Σ⁺) constants derived from the analysis of the nine vibrational levels include: ωₑ = 388.2643 cm⁻¹, Bₑ = 0.1208034(33) cm⁻¹, and rₑ = 2.439687(14) Å. Excited state (A¹Σ⁺) constants determined include: Tₑ = 13932.7068(10) cm⁻¹, ωₑ = 339.1454(20) cm⁻¹, Bₑ = 0.1139895(38) cm⁻¹, and rₑ = 2.511601(17) Å. The spectra of calcium and strontium borohydrides were observed using low resolution laser spectroscopy. The spectra were assigned to the òA₁ - Ẋ²A₁ and Ḃ²E - Ẋ²A₁ transitions of CaBH₄ and SrBH₄. The vibrational frequencies of the metal-ligand stretch determined for CaBH₄ were 457 cm⁻¹ (Ẋ²A₁), 473 cm⁻¹ (Ā²A₁), and 465 cm⁻¹ (Ḃ²E). The corresponding SrBH4 frequencies were 399 cm⁻¹, 420 cm⁻¹, and 421 cm⁻¹.
