Purpose- It is well-known that small businesses play a pivotal role in creating jobs and this is especially true in the economy of South Africa today. Enough cannot be said concerning the high unemployment rate prevalent in the country which if the right interventions are not put in place, this negative trend will continue. This unfavourable situation inspired the researcher to begin to consider the critical factors that drive entrepreneurship globally and discovered that funding is a major factor to be considered for the sustainability of any business whether the business is large or small. This study investigates the impact, the following funding streams; personal funds, Venture capital, Government funding and Bank loans exert on job creation in small businesses in Gauteng. Methodology- A mixed method approach was implemented with two interviews with experts in the financial sector for the qualitative component and the survey with questionnaires completed by entrepreneurs of start-up enterprises for the quantitative part of the report. The present utilisation of pans on the East RandWelling, Diana 29 January 2009 (has links)
M.A. / Pan are naturally occurring depressions or closed basins and play a very important role in ecosystems. The East Rand is characterized by more than one hundred pans dotting its landscape. The impact of urbanisation on these pans is significant. To determine exactly how the characteristics of the pans on the East Rand has changed, a comparison was done between the characteristics and utilization of the pans in 1992, as then described by Le Grange (1992) and the current situation in 2003. Water samples were also collected over a period of three months and analysed in the laboratories of Rand Water. The current utilization of the pans leaves much to be desired. Informal settlements, industries, residential areas and mine dumps are all found on the pan floors. Large waste dumping sites are developing at five out of the 19 pans in the study area. This has severely negatively affected the water quality within the pans, and the quality of bird life at thee pans. Continuous research is needed from government and private organisations on the pans found on the East Rand to improve their current quality and condition. Responsibility and proper management strategies must be implemented to protect the pans from negative human impacts.

This research focuses on the analysis of the selection process for the appointment of educators in selected schools in Gauteng East District. The selection process includes advertising the post, shortlisting, interviews, ratification, as well as recommendation and appointment by the HoD. This study confines itself to how the selection processes and procedure for the appointment of educators are followed by the school governing body. The research is also concerned with the ability of the governing body to manage the impact of the selection process. It is essential for them to have the necessary skills and knowledge to manage the selection process. The legislative principles in terms of the selection process were also investigated. The study focuses on the selection process for the appointment of educators in four township schools, namely two primary and two secondary schools. The researcher used a qualitative approach to gather the information for the research. Semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions were conducted. Interviews were conducted with four principals and four chairpersons of school governing bodies. Findings of this research emanating both from a literature review and interviews reveal the importance of following the proper selection processes, procedures and the legal principles when appointing educators. The study also reveals the inadequate training of some school governing bodies to carry out the process. The type of training provided by the Department of Education has a negative impact on the outcomes of the selection process. This study also reveals that the legal requirements of the selection process are not considered during the selection process. The recommendations made are based on the findings of this research. The focus is on the importance of intensive training of school governing bodies to enable them to handle the selection process properly. These bodies have to deal properly with external influences that tend to have an undue influence on the outcome of the selection process. Objectivity has to prevail throughout the process. The impact of urbanization on the basic services delivery by the municipalities in Gauteng Province07 October 2014 (has links)

(Development Economics) / According to section 152 (1) of the Republic of South African Constitution Act (No. 108 of 1996), the municipalities are required by law to provide basic services in a sustainable manner to their respective communities. However, the municipalities have been facing challenges in carrying out their mandate successfully. One of the major obstacles in this regard has been the increasing rate of urbanisation due to various factors. Service delivery protests by the respective communities continue to be on the rise as well due to insufficient access to the basic services provided by the municipalities. The main aim of this paper was to explore the impact of urbanisation on the delivery of basic services by the municipalities in Gauteng Province. In this study, the four basic services categories namely, access to water, electricity, sewerage and sanitation as well as solid waste management formed an integral part of the weighted service delivery index and thus the dependent variable. Urbanisation, capital expenditure and operating expenditure were the explanatory variables. The research has demonstrated that urbanisation does have an impact on the level of basic service delivery. Even though the government mobilises resources towards the delivery of basic services, these resources are insufficient to cater for the needs of the population as a whole.

through both theoretical and empirical research into this phenomenon, peculiar to the late
twentieth century. The first part of the work explores the theoretical underpinnings of
'global city thesis'. and its host dominant critique, the 'dual city thesis'. Following this, an
empirical assessment of the concept's relevance to Southern Africa's development is
performed. For this purpose, the most dominant locality in the region, Central Gauteng, is
analysed in terms of its potential for, and the problems involved with global city
development in a middle-income country. It is found that global city development here
would be desirable for both Central Gauteng and the greater SADC. By establishing Central
Gauteng as a global city, the region would be empowered to take greater control over its
economic destiny. The path this development would, by necessity take, is the promotion of
the locality as the 'Gateway to Africa'. Based on this orientation several development

A Research Report submitted to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, University of the Witwatersrand, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of the Built Environment in Housing.
APRIL 2016 / One of the most critical housing issues of concern today is the continued proliferation of informal settlements and the failure of government to meet the housing demand. Party to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, which includes the goal to improve the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers by 2020 introduced the Upgrading of Informal Settlements Programme (UISP). Despite the introduction of this new paradigm shift, its implementation has been minimal. This report investigates: if metropolitan municipalities are implementing the programme and the underlying challenges faced by municipalities in implementation. The study points to the importance of the 5 crucial variables: Policy content, context, commitment, capacity and coalitions and clients in implementation.
The research made use of qualitative methods, which included literature review of books, academic and media articles. The people interviewed comprised of political leaders, both senior and junior officials of the Municipalities and former employees of the City of Johannesburg, all tasked with informal settlement intervention implementation. The data collected was analysed using cross comparison between the various municipal officials’ responses, evaluating officials’ interpretation against policy interpretation, analysing the complexities of the policy, teasing out the comparisons, summarising data in order to make sense of what has been collected, identifying and classifying key concepts that emerge from the interviews, sorting data obtained through semi-structured interviews into smaller units in order to interpret how the two municipalities interpret and implement the programme (Gray, 2004:210),
categorising data in order to understand the funding mechanisms used by the various municipalities and using the key concepts for descriptive analysis.
Based on the findings of the study it was concluded that the Municipality has not been implementing UISP as per the housing code, however it has been utilising formalisation as an intervention in its informal settlement. The findings of the current study provide answers to the guiding research questions on whether municipalities are implementing UISP and interventions within the two municipalities. The conclusion is that both municipalities are not implementing UISP. However they have their own interventions which are biased toward the realities of project managers rather than the organized informal settlement communities thus disconnecting from the premise of UISP.
The envisaged limitation was getting hold of municipal officials as this research was conducted in the first quarter of the new financial year and municipal officials were engaged in strategic meetings. This is an unfortunate limitation that could not be avoided therefore interviews especially in EMM were not carried out as planned but as and when the contact persons were available. This resulted in only 5 officials being interviewed as compared to the anticipated number. Secondly, one of the municipalities that the research was conducted on was reluctant to give out information.

Expanding literature on the theme indicates that development centres or nodes play an important role in the establishment of such corridors. Flows of goods and information between such centres are key in creating conditions that are potentially favourable for further urban development along the communication axes connecting such centres. Combined, the various nodes form a unique flexible exchange environment allowing for dynamic synergies of interactive growth that can achieve scope economies aided by fast and reliable corridors of transport and communication infrastructure. In the South African development sphere, there is strong belief that functional relationships between nodes can play a decisive role in the establishment of development corridors. This research showed that the degree to which economic activities are concentrated in the greater Gauteng region; the resulting current or emerging multinodal structural composition; and the flows of economic activities between the various nodes result in the creation of developing corridors that channel and focus economic growth between networks of cities. This confirms the importance of corridors as spatial and economic development instruments. The research concluded that corridor development in Gauteng still favours monocentrism. Johannesburg and Pretoria feature as the most dominant nodes, exerting great forces of attraction on the distribution of development and economic growth in the region. The research also suggests a degree of polycentrism whereby economic growth is channelled between networks of cities, however development potential is most favourable in areas in close proximity to primary centres and tends to be functionality driven. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die ontwikkelende korridor-konsep is oor baie dekades heen as ‘n belangrike instrument in ruimtelike en geografiese beplanning beskou. Uitgebreide literatuur dui aan dat nodusse ‘n belangrike rol in die vasstelling van korridors speel. Die vloei van goedere en inligting tussen nodusse is uiters belangrik in die samestelling van toestande wat gunstig is vir ontwikkeling rondom kommunikasie-asse wat nodusse verbind. Die kombinasie van nodusse vorm ‘n unieke vloeibare omgewing waarin medewerkende interaksie die omvang van ekonomiese groei bepaal en word ondersteun deur vinnige, betroubare vervoer- en kommunikasie-infrastruktuur. In die Suid Afrikaanse ontwikkelingskonsep, word sterk geglo dat funksionele verhoudings tussen nodusse ‘n belangrike rol kan speel in die vasstelling van korridors. Die navorsing toon dat die wyse waarop ekonomiese aktiwiteite binne die Gauteng-streek versprei is; die huidige of opkommende samestelling van meervoudige nodusse; en die vloei van ekonomiese aktiwiteite tussen nodusse die skepping van korridors wat ekonomiese groei tussen netwerke van stede kanaliseer tot gevolg het. D.Ed. / Die herstrukturering van Tegniese Kolleges tot Verdere Onderwys- en Opleidinginstellings in Gauteng, en in Suid-Afrika as 'n geheel, moet gesien word teen die agtergrond van transformasionele veranderings wat in die hele land plaasvind. Sedert 1994 het die hele land 'n transformasieproses ondergaan nadat 'n nuwe demokratiese regering oorgeneem het en verander het van 'n apartheidstelsel tot 'n verenigde demokratiese samelewing. Onderwys is ook nie onaangeraak gelaat deur die transformasieproses nie. Die hele onderwysstelsel, wat hoer onderwys, algemene onderwys en verdere onderwys insluit, is hierdeur geraak. Die fokus van hierdie navorsing is the Verdere Onderwys- en Opleidingsektor wat Tegniese Kolleges insluit. Met ander woorde, Tegniese Kolleges is net deel van die wyer Verdere Onderwys- en Opleidingsektor. Ander voorsieners van Verdere Onderwys- en Opleiding (VOO) sluit hoerskole wat Grade 10 to 12 aanbied, private voorsieners en indiensopleiers in. Seksie 29 (1) (b) van die Grondwet van die Republiek van Suid-Afrika (SA, 1996) maak voorsiening daarvoor dat almal die reg tot verdere onderwys het wat die staat, waar redelik moontlik, meer en meer sal voorsien en toeganklik sal maak. In 1998 is die VOO Wet No. 98 (SA, 1998) aanvaar wat as die wetlike basis vir die transformasie van die VOO-sektor dien. Hierdie Wet bemagtig onder andere Lede van die Uitvoerende Rade in elk van die nege provinsies van Suid-Afrika om hulle VOO landskappe te herstruktureer. As deel van hierdie proses kon hulle Tegniese Kolleges tot Verdere Onderwys- en Opleidingsinstellings verklaar, laat saamsmelt of sommiges self sluit. Die 33 Tegniese Kolleges in Gauteng is verklaar tot Verdere Onderwys- en Opleidingsinstellings en later het 32 van hierdie kolleges saamgesmelt tot 8 groter kolleges. Om suksesvol te wees het die hele herstruktureringsproses behoorlike bestuur vereis. Die proses is op verskeie vlakke bestuur, naamlik op nasionale, provinsiale en instellingsvlak. Hierdie navorsing ondersoek die bestuur van hierdie herstruktureringsproses.

Bullying behaviours experienced by South African domestic workersMaboyana, Yolo-loyolo 22 October 2014 (has links)
M.Com. (Industrial Psychology) / Little is known in South Africa regarding the bullying behaviours faced by domestic workers at the hands of their employers. The objective of this study was thus to explore the nature of these bullying behaviours as experienced by South African domestic workers. The study was approached from a qualitative perspective where 10 participants were interviewed using unstructured interviews. The participants were South African from various parts of Gauteng, working for families from various demographics for at least three years. The interviews allowed for unbridled stories from the world of the domestic workers to emerge, thus consistent with my philosophical views and research strategy. It was found that all the domestic workers had experienced bullying by their employers and that all of these experiences were at least partly shared amongst them. Two categories (verbal and non-verbal) and eleven themes (belittlement, deception, wrongful accusations, lack of regard for wellbeing and basic worker needs, lack of regard for worker safety, abuse of power, racial discrimination, unsatisfactory remuneration, lack of regard for employment laws, threats to employment status and exclusion from decision making) were identified. The bullying was perpetrated by both sexes and all races. The study will add to the existing body of knowledge of bullying and assist policy makers in finding practical solutions to combating bullying.
