Multiferroic hexagonal HoMnO3 films

The fundamental properties of hexagonal multiferric HoMnO3 films have been thoroughly investigated. The films are grown by pulsed laser deposition on Y:ZrO2(111) substrates. High quality epitaxial HoMnO3 films of 25 { 1000 nm thickness were successfully prepared. The film properties are compared to those of single-crystals. The magnetization measurements revealed that the films show a deviating magnetic behavior from the single-crystals in several ways. For instance, the films have a weakened antiferromagnetic Ho3+ order confirmed from magnetic susceptibility. The difierences are likely to be related to the modified (mostly larger) lattice parameters of films. An approximate phase diagram in comparison with the single-crystal's one is constructed. For multiferroicity investigations, Second Harmonic Generation (SHG; in collaboration with the group of M. Fiebig) has been employed. By SHG, the ferroelectric polar order of the films is obviously confirmed. The ferroelectric switching at room temperature could be clearly demonstrated, whereas leakage of films requires generally a more sophisticated approach. / Die fundamentalen Eigenschaften von hexagonalen multiferroischen HoMnO3 Schichten werden eingehend untersucht. Die dünnen Schichten wurden mittels gepulster Laserdeposition auf Y:ZrO2(111)-Substraten gewachsen. Hochwertige epitaktische HoMnO3-Dünnschichten von 25 { 1000 nm Dicke wurden erfolgreich hergestellt. Die Dünnschichteigenschaften werden mit denen von Einkristallen verglichen. Die Magnitisierungsmessungen ergeben, dass die dünnen Schichten ein von den Einkristallen in verschiedener Weise abweichendes magnetischen Verhalten zeigen. Zum Beispiel haben die dünnen Schichten eine abgeschwächte antiferromagntetische Ho3+ Ordnung, die durch die magnetische Suszeptibilität bestätigt wird. Die Unterschiede sind wahrscheinlich auf die veränderten (meistens grösseren) Gitterparameter der dünnen Schichten zurückzuführen. Ein Phasendiagramm wird zum Vergleich mit Einkristallen konstruiert. Durch Second Harmonic Generation (SHG; in Zusammenarbeit mit der Gruppe von M. Fiebig) wird die ferroelektrische Ordnung der dünnen Schichten eindeutig bestätigt. Improvement of a fluorescence immunoassay with a compact diode-pumped solid state laser at 315 nm

We demonstrate the improvement of fluorescence immunoassay (FIA) diagnostics in deploying a newly developed compact diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) laser with emission at 315 nm. The laser is based on the quasi-three-level transition in Nd:YAG at 946 nm. The pulsed operation is either realized by an active Q-switch using an electro-optical device or by introduction of a Cr<SUP>4+</SUP>:YAG saturable absorber as passive Q-switch element. By extra-cavity second harmonic generation in different nonlinear crystal media we obtained blue light at 473 nm. Subsequent mixing of the fundamental and the second harmonic in a β-barium-borate crystal provided pulsed emission at 315 nm with up to 20 μJ maximum pulse energy and 17 ns pulse duration. Substitution of a nitrogen laser in a FIA diagnostics system by the DPSS laser succeeded in considerable improvement of the detection limit. Despite significantly lower pulse energies (7 μJ DPSS laser versus 150 μJ nitrogen laser), in preliminary investigations the limit of detection was reduced by a factor of three for a typical FIA.

Evaluation of particle release during cleaning of coated surfaces with pulsed Nd:YAG laser

The released particles during laser-based surface ablation of an epoxy resin coating were investigated for their number, size, mass and chemical composition. The laser used was a pulsed Nd:YAG laser with a maximum average power of 91 W. During the experiments, the applied laser power was investigated as a varying parameter. With the highest power, a maximum particle count of 4.3*108 particles/cm³ was measured, which corresponds to a mass of approximately 55 mg/m³. With decreasing laser power, the particle loading of the aerosol decreases. The particle sizes are bimodal distributed between 10 nm and approximately 3 μm. The first peak is at 34 nm and the second peak is at 630 nm. In terms of number, the nanoparticles dominate the distribution. During the analysis of the particles, fractal and spherical particles were determined, whereby the fractal particles are mainly in the nanometre range and the spherical particles mostly in the μm range. The chemical analysis of the particles showed that they consist of carbon and hydrogen.
