  • The Global ETD Search service is a free service for researchers to find electronic theses and dissertations. This service is provided by the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations.
Our metadata is collected from universities around the world. If you manage a university/consortium/country archive and want to be added, details can be found on the NDLTD website.

Lateral stability of rectangular beams

Bell, Leon Alexander January 1966 (has links)
This thesis presents a method for finding the lateral buckling load of a straight beam loaded perpendicular to its longitudinal axis with loads applied at any eccentricity. The beam can be restrained at any number of points along its length against deflections and rotations. The beam is divided into a number of segments and joints for which equations involving statics, elasticity, and continuity are written. The resulting group of nonlinear simultaneous equations is solved for several magnitudes of the loading pattern for which a buckling load is desired. A graph of the determinant of the structure matrix versus the load level yields the critical load. Included in the thesis is a complete listing of the computer program used in the solution technique. It was written for use on the IBM 7040 installation at the University of British Columbia. Included also are curves giving the lateral buckling stress of a beam simply supported at one end, and cantilevered over a flexible column at the other end, and whose top flange is laterally restrained. The beam carries a uniform load together with a concentrated load at the end of the cantilever. In addition, some data is included on the effect of tension flange bracing on the buckling load. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Civil Engineering, Department of / Graduate

Multilayer beam analysis including shear and geometric nonlinear effects

Kwan, Herman Ho Ming January 1987 (has links)
This thesis presents an analysis and experimental verification for a multilayer beam in bending. The formulation of the theoretical analysis includes the combined effect of shear and geometric nonlinearity. From this formulation, a finite element program (CUBES) is developed. The experimental tests were done on multilayer, corrugated paper beams. Failure deflections and loads are thus obtained. The experimental results are reasonably predicted by the numerical results. Based upon this comparison, a maximum compressive stress is determined for the tested beam. Finally, design curves for the tested beam are drawn using the determined maximum compressive stress and the finite element program. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Civil Engineering, Department of / Graduate

The Dynamic Characteristics of a Beam Whose Material is Represented by a Three-Parameter Viscoelastic Solid

Devkar, Vishnurao K. 01 May 1972 (has links)
Man observes many phenomena occurring in nature which he can use to his benefit. He observes how physical quantities vary as a function of their environment in order to predict how these variations will affect a system he wishes to design. For this purpose, he must establish a model that is representative of the relation between those physical quantities and certain environments to which they are subjected.
