Small region sustainability is an extremely important part of the journey to sustainability of the global population, as the most difference can be made at this spatial level through decision making and community choice. However, small regions have not been the focus of sustainability literature. Therefore, this thesis develops theory to explain what small region sustainability involves and tested the applicability of current sustainability assessment methods to find an effective tool for the journey to sustainability that can be used for social learning, decision making, policy development, research and monitoring of sustainability in small regions. It was found through the development of a model of sustainable carrying capacity and the major pressures of human activities on the environment, that sustainability for small regions means living equitably with the impacts of human activities in the region within the limits of its ecosystems. This thesis also found that none of the current sustainability methods tested were effective or useful as a tool for small regions. Therefore, a new sustainability assessment method was developed, the Sustainable Carrying Capacity Assessment (SCCA), which assesses the equitability and size of the major pressures that the human activities are causing and determines if this pressure exceeds the sustainable carrying capacity of the region, and thus, the sustainability of the population. Thus, for small regions to become sustainable, they must live equitably within the sustainable carrying capacity of the region's ecosystems, and a tool that can help them achieve this is the SCCA. By raising social awareness, guiding policy development and decision making this method can help guide small regions, and other spatial levels on their journey to sustainability. Therefore, it is recommended that Local Government Areas, Regional Organisation of Councils, schools, local community groups and anyone who wants to learn more about sustainability use this method. This thesis, therefore, makes a significant contribution to the field of sustainability.

Genetic variation of Aspergillus fumigatus from Auckland, New Zealand / Contemporary gene flow is a major force shaping the Aspergillus fumigatus population in Auckland, New ZealandKorfanty, Gregory January 2019 (has links)
Aspergillus fumigatus is a globally present opportunistic fungal pathogen that plays a key role in degrading organic matter. A. fumigatus can cause a vast array of diseases, collectively known as aspergilloses. The most serious of these is invasive aspergillosis, that has a mortality rate of 30 to 95% with treatment. Recent studies have indicated that the global A. fumigatus population consists of multiple divergent genetic clusters that are broadly distributed geographically. However, most of the previously analyzed samples have come from continental Eurasia and the Americas where the effects of historical or contemporary gene flow is difficult to distinguish. My thesis project, therefore, focused on analyzing the genetic diversity of the Auckland, New Zealand A. fumigatus population, as it is geographic distant from all previously analyzed populations. Here, we obtained 104 A. fumigatus isolates from Auckland and compared the genotypes of these isolates to population data obtained from nine other countries from Europe, Africa, North America, and Asia. The goal was to analyze the potential effects of historical differentiation and gene flow within this population. We determined that the Auckland population had a low, non-significant level of differentiation compared to most previously surveyed global populations. However, the Auckland population also contained unique genetic elements not present within populations from other geographic regions. Though the hypothesis of random recombination was rejected, we found abundant evidence for phylogenetic incompatibility and recombination within the Auckland A. fumigatus population. Lastly, we identified two triazole resistant strains within the Auckland population, with one carrying the common TR34/L98H cyp51A mutation. Our results suggest that contemporary gene flow, likely due to anthropogenic factors, is a major force shaping the New Zealand A. fumigatus population. These results contribute to our understanding of the high levels of gene flow observed within and among many geographic populations of A. fumigatus. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc) / Aspergillus fumigatus is a globally distributed fungal mold capable of causing serious diseases in individuals with weakened immune systems or lung damage. In the environment, A. fumigatus lives in the soil where it degrades organic matter and contributes to the cycling of nitrogen and carbon across the planet. Due to the airborne nature of its spores, people inhale this fungus daily, and those at risk may develop disease. These diseases, collectively known as aspergilloses, can result in long term chronic illnesses, and in the case of invasive aspergillosis, the death rate can be as high as 95%, even with treatment. Medical treatment of aspergilloses involves the use of antifungal drugs. However, some A. fumigatus strains have developed resistance. I am interested in the patterns of global genetic diversity of A. fumigatus populations. For my MSc thesis, I investigated the A. fumigatus population within Auckland, New Zealand, as it is both geographically isolated and distant from other previously surveyed populations. Our data illustrated that the New Zealand population contains pockets of unique diversity as well as high levels of similarity to the previously surveyed populations within Europe. My results suggest that human influences, likely due to travel and trade, have played a large role in shaping the genetic diversity of the A. fumigatus population from Auckland, New Zealand.

Sustainable urban agriculture and forestation : the edible connected cityDurant, Valerie A. 12 July 2013 (has links)
Current global agricultural practices are recognized as unsustainable. The increase in overall human population as well as the global trend of rural to urban migration, partially as a result of historically and continual unsustainable agricultural practices, exacerbates the vicious cycle of poverty and hunger in developing countries. Furthermore, cities and regions in developed countries practice unsustainable food production, distribution and consumption patterns, and as a result, exceed their global ecological footprint (Rees 2009). Consequently, the world is facing a global food (FAO 2009) and water crisis (UN Sick Water 2010). Cities and Regions must learn to feed themselves to address local food insecurity as well as protect from the climate effects of increased urbanization, including the Urban Heat Island effect (UHIe) by optimizing and fully integrating the local ecosystem services of food, water and forest within a tightly woven compact urban form through the implementation of strategic urban and regional food system planning. Cities can mitigate climate change and reduce the UHIe, by implementing sustainable intensive urban agriculture approaches through policy and zoning interventions that include concepts such as intensively productive urban agriculture that includes green roofs, vertical farming and greenways as continuously productive and edible urban landscapes, referred to in this paper as continuously productive urban agriculture and forestation (CPUAF) in the private and public realm. A highly participative, adaptive systems approach is explored as the key to sustainability within an economic world order that included corporate social responsibility and social enterprise as the foundation for the integration of multiple synergies. An increasing body of evidence often links urban forestation with urban greenery initiatives, as a carbon sink to reduce UHI effects, to reduce GHG emissions and as a tool for urban beautification and place making (ISDR: 2009,109). Urban agriculture, through the production of local food is increasingly recognized as a means to reduce fossil fuel emissions by reducing transportation and production outputs, to provide a secure local food source, enhance biodiversity and educate the public regarding food source while fostering a sense of community, environmental awareness and stewardship.
