A Study of the Inheritance and Linkage Relationships of Three Glossy Characteristics in Barley

Martineau, Jess R. 01 May 1972 (has links)
Twenty-two barley crosses (Hordeum sp.) were studied in the F2 generation to determine the inheritance of the following contrasting characters: (N,n),(E,e),(Tr, tr), (Li,li),(Gp,gp),(K,k),(Z,z), (Gl,gl), (Gs, gs),(B,b),(Trd,trd),(O,o),(R,r),(Rb,rb), and Ge, ge). The three factors for glossyness, (gl), (gs), and (ge), were studied in relation to the other factors and each other to determine possible linkage relationships. (gl) was found to be linked with (k) and 16 percent recombination and to (z) with 13 percent recombination. (gs) appeared to be linked with (gp) in two crosses, with a third cross showing independence. No other linkage relationships were found.

Matte matters: When matte packaging increases perceptions of food naturalness

Marckhgott, Eva, Kamleitner, Bernadette January 2019 (has links) (PDF)
Matte surfaces, that is, those that are dull or lusterless not glossy and shiny, are a current trend in packaging. But does packaging surface affect what consumers think about the product inside it? We focus on consumers' perception of packaged food products at the point of sale. Using three experiments, we show that food in matte packaging can be perceived as more natural. Notably, the effect of matte packaging only holds for rather artificial products. When matte packaging increases perceptions of product naturalness, consumers also expect the product to be tastier and are more likely to buy it.

Labonte, Joanie 05 1900 (has links)
Glossy buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula L.) is an exotic species invading many areas in southern of Quebec, particularly in the Eastern Townships. Currently, we do not know very much about the species ecology and no thorough study of its distribution in temperate forest has been performed. Therefore, the first objective of the project was to map the spatial distribution of glossy buckthorn in two areas of the Eastern Townships, using remote sensing techniques. The second objective was to evaluate the environmental variables, or predictors, best explaining the presence of glossy buckthorn. The phenology of glossy buckthorn differs from most of the indigenous tree species found in this area because its leaves fall later in autumn. This characteristic allowed to map, using spectral unmixing, the probability of occurrence of glossy buckthorn, with temporal Landsat 8 (OLI) imagery data series. Glossy buckthorn coverage was calculated on 119 plots on the field. The resulting maps showed an agreement of 69% with field data. A SPOT-7 image, which has a finer resolution than Landsat 8 (OLI), was then used but it did not improve the quality of the map, since its acquisition date was not optimal, due to a lack of availability. Concerning the second objective of the research, the best variable explaining the presence of glossy buckthorn was stand density, which leads to believe that forest cover openings could ease the establishment of buckthorn. However, the results tend to show that glossy buckthorn is a generalist species, easily adapting to various environmental conditions.

Winell, Anneli January 2016 (has links)
This thesis analyses discourses on health and wellbeing in three Swedish lifestyle magazines for women, Amelia, Tara and M-magasin, and how readers of these magazines reflect on and negotiate the values and identities presented in them. The aim of the thesis is to contribute to increased knowledge about mediatized religion, directed to women by commercial women's magazines on a secular market, and how this religion is presented, perceived and used as a resource for women's wellbeing, lifestyle and identity. The study is a qualitative case study combining a content analysis of what is referred to as the wellbeing discourses of the three magazines, and a reception study. This design was selected to combine a media centred and a consumer oriented perspective. Inspired by Nancy T. Ammerman, the magazines’ and the readers’ discursive understanding of religion and spirituality was approached through the concept of everyday religion. The magazines and the readers associated religion with institutional religion and a collective experience. Spirituality was related to non-institutional religion and individually chosen meaning-making elements from both non-institutional and institutional religion. This individualistic spirituality was, thus, still connected to institutional religion. This religion can, on an individual as well as structural level, be connected to a global holistic consumption spirituality and a standardization and homogenization of contemporary religion where practises like yoga and meditation occupied a prominent position. The understanding of religion and spirituality presented through the magazines’ wellbeing discourses, can be seen as “glossy-feminism”, a feminism that grows out of a neo-liberal self-help paradigm, and a feminisation of wellbeing in contemporary western society. Wellbeing is depicted as a female concern that legitimates the reader's attention to her own body as the primary tool to achieve control over her own life and social relationships, and for gender equality in society. This strategy is connected to female caring practice in traditional gender positions. The thesis draws on theories of deregulation of religion, the mediatization and individualisation of religion, and contributes to a deeper understanding of how these shape contemporary religious change. Through focusing the understudied area of commercial women's magazines, it contributes with new knowledge to the field of research on media as a primary source of peoples’ encounter with religion. / Impact of Religion

Evaluation of Readability of displays in Bright Surroundings

Guo, Yi January 2014 (has links)
With the wide spread of wireless technology, many devices, such as tablets, smartphones, notebooks, fixed and portable navigation systems are becoming immensely convenient to access and are making a significant contribution to our daily life. Compared to conventional PC, portable devices are used at different times of the day and in various conditions and environments, both indoors and outdoors. As a consequence, devices need to be adaptive and adaptable to a wide range of use contexts and conditions. It is often argued that contextual factors, such as the ambient illuminance in relation to characteristics of the display (e.g., surface treatment, size, screen reflectance, and display luminance) may have a strong influence on the use of such devices and corresponding user experiences. Yet, the current understanding of these influence factors is still rather limited. Therefore, in this thesis work, emphasis is given particularly to the impact of lighting on readability, visual performance and affective state. As a first step, a preparatory investigation focusing on the objective measure- ment of display luminance and contrast, display gloss, and luminance in different scenes, took place. For this first step, a large number of tablet and laptop dis- plays were evaluated. This preparatory investigation served as a complement to and as an input for step two, namely a subjective study with human test subjects which was organized in a controlled lab environment. In the subjective test (N=18), different types of displays, luminance settings and lighting conditions were included to investigate the impact on display read- ability. The results of subjective tests indicate that for matte, visual acuity and reading speed is both impaired by the increase of ambient light luminance. However, they are compensated effectively by the increase of display luminance when it is below 500-600 cd/ m2. Compared with matte display, the glossy dis- play shows to be more robust in relation to the ambient light, though it indeed has a negative effect on visual acuity and reading speed. However, for subjective feelings, there is no significant difference between the two displays. Both of them are influenced by the ambient light only. In the post-experiment evaluation of the preference of displays, the majority (61%) of the test subjects indicated a preference for the glossy display.
