A comparative study of trends in dental assistant utilization among dentists in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Boston, Massachusetts

LeGallee, Bunny L. January 1985 (has links)
Thesis (M.Sc.)--Boston University, Henry M. Goldman School of Graduate Dentistry, 1985 (Dental Public Health). / Includes bibliographical references: (leaves 70-74). / The purpose of this study was to determine whether the changes currently evolving in the delivery of dental care are affecting the way in which dental assistants are being utilized and, if so, whether the training offered in accredited dental assisting programs is meeting the needs and demands of the system. It was intended that the results of this study would be useful in determining future directions for dental assisting as a career, and in invoking changes in dental assisting education to improve satisfaction of both dentists and dental assistants. The research was conducted via survey questionnaires which were mailed to 300 randomly selected dentists in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Boston, Massachusetts. The survey items focused on the dentists’ backgrounds and attitudes toward dental assistant utilization; numbers and credentials of dental assistants employed; and current utilization patterns of dental assistants. The results were summarized with descriptive statistics, frequencies and distributions, and analyzed using chi-square and tests of correlation. It appeared that changes in dental education and in modes of delivery of dental services had little effect on patterns of dental assistant utilization and, moreover, that the emphasis of the A.D.A. accreditation standards for dental assisting education programs was congruent with the demands of the surveyed dental practitioners. It was further apparent that although dentists had positive attitudes toward dental assistant utilization, they appeared to be unaware of the status of state regulations governing utilization of dental auxiliaries, and generally underutilize the skills of trained assistants. This paper addresses these and other issues of concern to dental assistants, dental assisting educators and dentists. The results of this study provide a foundation for many areas of future research.

A Performer's Guide to the First Two Movements of Pyotr Tchaikovsky's Grand Sonata in G Major, Opus 37

Dorozhkina, Elena V. 12 1900 (has links)
The Grand Sonata in G Major, Op.37, composed by Tchaikovsky, is a powerful large-scale composition and a piece of a symphonic scope. However, the sonata did not receive a desired acclaim in the modern repertoire partially due to an obvious lack of performance instructions in the existing editions, which makes the sonata challenging to perform. Thus, in order to reduce the technical challenges and to encourage more frequent performances of the sonata, this dissertation offers a performer's guide that addresses essential elements of pedal indications, phrasing and detailed dynamics, as well as suggestions on voice balancing, agogics, fingering, and hand redistribution. The guide consists of musical examples that are focused on the most challenging sections of the sonata, and is organized in the subsections according to a technique type proposed to facilitate a performance of the sonata. In addition to the examples on application of individual techniques presented in the main body of the dissertation, alternative and more elaborate versions of the suggestions are proposed in the appendices. The dissertation also provides a history of the sonata, and discusses its concept and symphonic principles. Additionally, the work highlights Tchaikovsky's piano style and describes his views on the art of piano performance. A special attention is also given to two musical references repeatedly embedded into the sonata: the bell-like sonorities and Dies irae melody.

Understanding the Late Mesoproterozoic Earth System from the Oldest Strata in Grand Canyon: C-Isotope Stratigraphy and Facies Analysis of the 1254 Ma Bass Formation, Grand Canyon Supergroup, AZ., USA

Lathrop, Erin C. 01 May 2018 (has links)
Rocks provide insight into ancient times before complex animals existed. The oldest sedimentary rocks in Grand Canyon (the Bass Formation) allow us to glimpse into what things might have been like over a billion years ago. These rocks record the time known as the Mesoproterozoic Era (1.6 to 1.0 billion years ago), otherwise known as the ‘boring billion’. These rocks are thought to be the right age to indicate the end of an oddly stable world when continents were quiet and life was calm, yet they predate younger rocks that record extreme events. The Bass Formation, some of the only rock of this age in the world, contains evidence for life and the carbon cycle, and yields information about Earth’s environments 1.2 billion years ago. The carbon cycle can be studied using carbonate rocks. Assuming that the rock has the same chemistry as the water it formed in, we can measure the relative abundance of carbon isotopes to see a ‘fingerprint’ of the system during the time the rock was deposited. During the boring billion, it is thought that very little variation occurs in this fingerprint. However, as more studies are completed, we see a modest variation in units around the age of the Bass Formation. The fingerprint results from this study can be added to the growing collection of Mesoproterozoic studies and help to further our knowledge about the world from this not-so-boring period of time.

Spatial Correlation Between Framework Geology And Shoreline Morphology In Grand Bay, Mississippi

Mullennex, Asa J 12 August 2016 (has links)
The Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (GBNERR) adjoins two costal embayments in the eastern Mississippi Sound, Grand Bay and Point Aux Chenes Bay, which encompass a late Pleistocene/ Holocene delta of the Pascagoula-Escatawpa fluvial system. Historical maps and aerial imagery indicate that the GBNERR shoreline has experienced long-term retreat at spatially variable rates. The research presented here investigates the relationship between the coastal geomorphological evolution of GBNERR and the underlying geological framework. Coastal morphology and stratigraphy were characterized by analyzing 85 km of chirp sonar sub-bottom seismic profiles and 45 sediment cores. Shoreline retreat rates were determined through geospatial regression analysis of 11 historical shorelines surveyed between 1850 and 2015. Results indicate that Pleistocene paleochannels in the underlying fluvial distributary ravinement surfaces are spatially correlated with shoreline segments that exhibit elevated retreat rates and should be accounted for in future models of local as well as regional coastal evolution.
