Effect of Rancher’s Management Philosophy, Grazing Practices, and Personal Characteristics on Sustainability Indices for North Central Texas RangelandBecker, Wayne 12 1900 (has links)
To assess sustainability of privately owned rangeland, a questionnaire was used to gathered data from ranches in Cooke, Montague, Clay, Wise, Parker, and Jack counties in North Central Texas. Information evaluated included: management philosophy, economics, grazing practices, environmental condition, quality of life, and demographics. Sustainability indices were created based on economic and land health indicator variables meeting a minimum Cronbach‘s alpha coefficient (α = 0.7). Hierarchical regression analysis was used to create models explaining variance in respondents’ indices scores. Five predictors explained 36% of the variance in rangeland economic sustainability index when respondents: 1) recognized management inaction has opportunity costs affecting economic viability; 2) considered forbs a valuable source of forage for wildlife or livestock; 3) believed governmental assistance with brush control was beneficial; 4) were not absentee landowners and did not live in an urban area in Texas, and; 5) valued profit, productivity, tax issues, family issues, neighbor issues or weather issues above that of land health. Additionally, a model identified 5 predictors which explained 30% of the variance for respondents with index scores aligning with greater land health sustainability. Predictors indicated: 1) fencing cost was not an obstacle for increasing livestock distribution; 2) land rest was a component of grazing plans; 3) the Natural Resource Conservation Service was used for management information; 4) fewer acres were covered by dense brush or woodlands, and; 5) management decisions were not influenced by friends. Finally, attempts to create an index and regression analysis explaining social sustainability was abandoned, due to the likely-hood of type one errors. These findings provide a new line of evidence in assessing rangeland sustainability, supporting scientific literature concerning rangeland sustainability based on ranch level indicators. Compared to measuring parameters on small plots, the use of indices allows for studying replicated whole- ranch units using rancher insight. Use of sustainability indices may prove useful in future rangeland research activities.

A Social Analysis of Grazing Management on National Forest Lands: A Case Study in Catron County, New MexicoWatts, Alexis S. 01 May 1999 (has links)
The rural west in this country faces increased national pressure concerning the iii management of natural resources on public lands. Issues regarding natural resource management are becoming more important as they continue to affect rural communities and capture the attention of a variety of interest groups. Natural resource managers are increasingly required to consider social dimensions of resource use and management. Lack of consideration in these areas can lead to dissatisfied, and even hostile, local residents and interest groups. Often land managers face criticism from many groups at once as a result of management decisions.
This study analyzed a particular resource issue in a particular region of the west: grazing management in Catron County, New Mexico. The findings indicate a complex social structure with an historical base in natural resource dependence, and a personal independence from highly regulated grazing management. Changes in national legislation and changes in the Forest Service over time have contributed to the erosion of relationships between the Forest Service and ranchers and environmentalists. A socially informed, pragmatic and proactive approach to grazing management is currently lacking in Catron County.

Herbage production and feeding value of marandu grass pastures submmitted to continuous stocking regimes by beef cattle.Andrade, Flávia Maria Erbetta de 29 January 2004 (has links)
Grazing management, characterized by the frequency and intensity of defoliation, determines sward structure. This, in turn, defines plant and animal responses. Aiming at a better understanding of the cause and effect relationships between sward structure manipulation and animal production from pastures, the present experiment had the objective of evaluating herbage production, botanical and morphological composition of sward herbage mass and herbage samples harvested simulating grazing, as well as the nutritive value of these samples and animal performance of growing beef cattle heifers on Brachiaria brizantha cv Marandu pastures submitted to continuous stocking regimes with variable stocking rate. The experiment was carried out at Departamento de Zootecnia, USP/ESALQ, Piracicaba, SP, from 01 December 2001 until 26 December 2002. Treatments corresponded to four sward steady state conditions (10, 20, 30 and 40 cm sward surface heights - SSH), assigned to experimental units according to a complete randomized block design, with four replications. During spring and summer tall swards (30 and 40 cm) presented higher herbage accumulation rates than short swards (10 and 20 cm) (84.2, 88.5, 133.0, 141.5 and 116.6, 144.3, 134.4, 135.0 kg.ha -1 .day -1 DM for the 10, 20, 30 e 40 cm swards, respectively). In autumn and winter this pattern of response changed, with higher herbage accumulation rates measured in short swards (61.1, 61.7, 44.2, 17.5 and 22.4, 10.0, -2.2, -22.5 kg.ha -1 .day -1 DM for the 10, 20, 30 e 40 cm swards, respectively). There was no difference in herbage yield at the end of the 13-month experimental period (26,360 kg.ha -1 DM on average), although sward condition did result in significant changes in seasonal distribution of dry matter production. Proportions of leaf (21.5%) and stems (27.8%) in sward herbage mass remained relatively constant within the range of SSH studied and the proportion of dead material was lower for the 10 cm swards (45.3%) in relation to others (49.2%, on average). For the grazing simulation samples the proportion of leaves was much higher (78.1%) and stems (6.0%) and dead material (9.7%) significantly lower than that registered in sward herbage mass. Herbage from the 10 cm swards presented lower proportions of senescing leaves (2.7%) than 20, 30 and 40 cm swards (3.5%, on average). Chemically, higher concentrations of ash, crude protein and lignin, as well as organic matter digestibility, were determined in herbage samples from the 10 cm swards (11.7, 13.7, 3.6 and 67.1%, respectively) in relation to the other sward conditions studied (11.2, 12.2, 3.0 and 63.9%, respectively, on average). NDF and ADF contents were lower for 10 cm swards (60.8 and 28.1%, respectively) when compared to 20, 30 and 40 cm swards (62.0 and 29.0%, respectively). Over the entire experimental period, the stocking rate decreased with increasing SSH (4.1, 3.0, 2.1 and 1.2 AU ha -1 for 10, 20, 30 and 40 cm, respectively), but the highest values were recorded during over the spring and summer periods. Despite the slightly higher nutritive value of the herbage from the 10 cm swards, animal performance increased with increasing SSH (0.19, 0.51, 0.75 and 0.93 kg animal -1 day -1 for 10, 20, 30 and 40 cm, respectively). The control and manipulation of sward state (structure) affected herbage production and nutritive value, although animal performance was very likely determined by differences in herbage intake for the sward conditions studied since differences in nutritive value were small.

Belmonte) sob pastejo / Agronomic responses, organic reserves and nitrogen biological fixation in forage peanut (Arachis pintoi Krapovickas & Gregory cv. Belmonte) under grazingCarvalho, Lucas da Rocha 15 February 2018 (has links)
The ideal grazing frequency of tropical forage grasses is associated with the interruption of regrowth when sward canopy intercepts 95% of the incident light (LI). Tropical forage legumes, particularly forage peanut, have a high potential of use, specialy due to their ability to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere. However, information about their responses under grazing are scarse. The objective of this study was to evaluate the agromic responses, C and N organic reserves and nitrogen biological fixation (NBF) of forage peanut (Arachis pintoi cv. Belmonte) under grazing. For measurements regarding NBF, two experiments were carried out, one under continuous and other under intermitent stocking (rotational grazing). Prior to the beginning of the experiments (between 60 and 90 days), paddocks were subjected to the grazing treatments for adaptation purposes. For the intermitent stocking experiment, treatments corresponded to combinations between two pre- (95% and maximum canopy light interception during grazing - LI95% and LIMax, respectively) and two post-grazing conditions (post-grazing heights equivalent to 40 or 60% of the pre-grazing height). For the continuous stocking experiment, treatments corresponded to four grazing intensities represented for sward management heights of 5, 10, 15 and 20 cm. The experimental design was the same, a randomized complete block with four replications. Measurements were carried out throughout the year, in pre-determined seasons. Under intermitent stocking, swards managed with the LI95% target were shorter (13.3 cm) than those managed with the LIMax target (18.5 cm), and accumulated less stolon during regrowth, although with no difference in herbage accumulation. Seasonal variations in agronomic responses were associated with the annual cycle of plant development and strategy for optimizing energy use, an event known as segmentation. Contratry to the majority of reports in the literature, frequent (LI95%) and severe (post-grazing height equivalente to 40% of the pré-grazing height) grazings under intermitent stocking or intense grazing under continuous stocking (management heights of 5 and 10 cm) did not cause negative impacts on root mass and nodulation. However, greater values of nitrogen originated from biological fixation (%Ndda ) and NBF (kg ha-1 N) were recorded on swards managed with moderate to lenient grazing intensities, characterized by greater values of aerial biomass (average LAI) regardless of the grazing method used. C and N organic reserves varied throughout the year. In general, there was an accumulation of soluble carbohydrates and nitrogen (concentration and pool) during periods of limited availability of climatic growth factors (autumn/winter and early spring). Independent of grazing method, continuous or intermitent stocking, plant responses had their variability well associated with light and its relations, since when ploted against average aerial biomass or LAI followed the same continuum of variation. Moderate to lenient grazing intensity seems to be the most adequate for managing forage peanut under grazing.

Marandu submetidos à lotação contínua e ritmos de crescimento contrastantes / Dynamics of herbage accumulation of marandu palisadegrass swards subjected to continuous stocking and contrasting rhythms of growthMesquita, Priscila de 29 September 2008 (has links)
Recently, the concept of sward target has been used to define grazing management strategies, with sward surface height, among other swards structural characteristics, assuming an important role for implementing it in field conditions. Management practices can influence growth and senescence processes differently, interfering with herbage accumulation and, therefore, need to have their effect known in order to allow adequate planning of efficient and sustainable grazing management practices. Against that background, the objective of this study was to evaluate sward structure and its patterns of change throughout the year and the dynamics of herbage accumulation on continuously stocked marandu palisadegrass swards maintained at 30 cm and subjected to contrasting rhythms of growth from January 2007 to April 2008. Treatments corresponded to three nitrogen application rates (150, 300 and 450 kg ha-1 N) plus the control (no N fertilisation), and were allocated to experimental units (1200 m2 paddocks) according to a complete randomised block design, with four replications. The following response variables were evaluated: sward herbage mass, morphological composition, leaf area index (LAI), foliage angle, canopy light interception, tiller population density and the rates of total, leaf and stem growth, senescence, net herbage accumulation. Overall, the increase in nitrogen application rates resulted in increase of sward herbage mass, leaf and stem percentage and decrease of dead material percentage, modifications in line with the increase in LAI, light interception and tiller population density and decrease in foliage angle. These changes in sward structural characteristics were relatively small, but resulted in increased rates of total and leaf growth as well as net herbage accumulation on swards fertilised with high rates of nitrogen application. In spite of the wide range of nitrogen application rates used, it was possible to detect a common pattern of variation in sward structure, there was a common pattern of variation in sward structure, and treatments differences were related only to the size of the variation recorded, consequence of the faster or slower growth rhythm of swards. Changes in sward structure and herbage accumulation were larger with season of the year relative to nitrogen application rates. Faster growth rhythms associated with high nitrogen application rates resulted in proportionately similar increases in growth and senescence, suggesting a strong compensatory mechanism that would avoid that significant variations in utilisation efficiency were obtained. This indicates consistency and robustness of sward height as a field indicator, and highlights the possibility of using it as an efficient management tool to monitor and control the grazing process and sward structure. Further, it also highlights the need for careful planning and strategic use of nitrogen as a means of ensuring high levels of herbage production, utilisation efficiency, animal performance and productivity.

Suplementação energética de bovinos mantidos em pastagens tropicais com diferentes estratégias de manejo e seus efeitos sobre o consumo de forragem, comportamento ingestivo e parâmetros metabólicos / Supplementation of cattle maintained in tropical grazing with various management strategies and their effects on forage intake, feeding behavior and metabolic parametersSantos, Murilo Garrett Moura Ferreira dos 16 December 2014 (has links)
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of low dose supplementation with ground corn (0 vs. 0.3% BW) on forage intake, feeding behavior and metabolic parameters (i.e. rumen and blood) in Nellore cattle grazing Bracharia brizantha cv. palisadegrass submitted to two managementstrategies (25 / 15cm vs. 35 / 21cm heights as pre-grazing/ post-grazing heights, respectively). Eight rumen cannulated bulls were used, averaging body weight (BW) of 414 kg ± 10.32 SEM. Two 4X4 Latin squares were used simultaneously. The animals were placed in 2.4 ha palisadegrass pastures. Two levels of supplementation (ground corn) and two grazing management strategies were studied: T1) unsupplemented management and 25/15 cm (height pre and post-grazing heights, respectively); T2) supplemented with 0.3% BW on 25/15 ground corn and management; T3) unsupplemented management and 35/21 cm; T4) supplemented with 0.3% BW with ground corn and 35/21 cm sward heights. The parameters evaluated were forage intake, animal performance, ruminal pH and ammonia-N concentrations of short chain fatty acids (SCFA), plasma levels of glucose and total tract digestibility of nutrients. Supplementation with 0.3% BW caused high substitution rates with reduced forage intake% BW (P <0.10) and no change (P> 0.05) on intake of digestible dry matter. This effect was observed regardless of the pasture management strategy. Among the variables of animal behavior, the use of supplements reduced grazing time (P <0.05) and the management 25/15 resulted in higher bite rates (P <0.01). Supplementation did not affect ruminal pH (P> 0.05), reduced the concentration of NH3-N (P <0.05), increased the molar proportion of propionate and decreased the acetate: propionate ratio (P <0.05) . The management 25/15 increased the molar proportion of propionate and decreased the acetate: propionate ratio (P <0.1). Supplementation reduced (P <0.05) digestion of forage DM, but not NDF (P> 0.05) and forage increased digestion of the diet DM (P <0.05). The digestibility of forage and total diet had higher digestibility of DM and NDF when were managed with 25/15 cm (P <0.05). Supplementation with 0.3% BW reduces forage intake and does not increase the energy intake of cattle in rotational grazing systems independent of the management strategy adopted. The management strategies of 25/15 and 35/21 cm of pre- and post-grazing heights, respectively, were effective and did not differ on overall individual performance of beef cattle grazing on good nutritional value intensively managed pastures in the rainy season.

Padrões de crescimento de pastos de capim-mulato submetidos a estratégias de pastejo rotativo / Growth patterns of mulato grass subjected to strategies of rotational stocking managementLimão, Veridiana Aparecida 31 August 2010 (has links)
Use of forage grasses on pastures without taking into account basic information related to their pattern of growth and development results in lack of knowledge regarding their morphophysiological limits to grazing, which may result in degradation of large areas of cultivated grasslands. Against that background, the objective of this study was to evaluate the growth patterns of mulato grass subjected to strategies of rotational stocking management, aiming at providing important physiological interpretations for planning and structuring grazing management practices. Treatments corresponded to combinations between two grazing severities (post-grazing heights of 15 and 20 cm) and two grazing intervals (time necessary for swards to intercept 95 or 100% of the incident light during regrowth LI), and were allocated to experimental units (1200m2 paddocks) according to a 2x2 factorial arrangement and a randomised complete block design, with four replications, from January 2008 until April 2009. The following response variables were studied: sward leaf area index (LAI), crop growth rate (CGR), net assimilatory rate (NAR), relative growth rate (RGR), leaf area ratio (LAR), specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf weight ratio (LWR). During summer 1, treatment 100/20 resulted in the largest value of CGR, consequence of large remaining LAI associated with the post-grazing height of 20 cm and of the long grazing interval associated with the pre-grazing target of 100% LI. CGR decreased throughout autumun/winter/early spring and late spring. During summer 2, treatment 95/15 showed larger values of CGR than treatments 100/15 and 100/20, consequence of larger values of RGR and residual LAI of swards managed at 95 relative to those managed at 100% LI. NAR and LWR varied only with season of the year. Except during summer 1, swards managed at 95% LI showed larger values of LAR than those managed at 100% LI, a result of morphological adjustments mainly characterised by variations in SLA. Overall, grazing interval was more effective than grazing severity in interfering with most of the response variables studied. Therefore, adequate management of mulato grass under rotational stocking conditions correspond to a pre-grazing height of 30 cm (equivalent to the pre-grazing target of 95% LI) and post-grazing height of 15 to 20 cm.

Effects of Habitat Manipulations on Utah Prairie Dogs (Cynomys Parvidens) and Their Habitats on the Awapa Plateau Recovery Area in South-Central UtahCaudill, Gretchen Elizabeth 01 August 2012 (has links)
The Utah prairie dog (Cynomys parvidens) was listed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as an endangered species in 1973 because of range-wide population declines. The species was reclassified as threatened in 1984 because of population increases on private lands. Habitat fragmentation coupled with a lack of suitable habitat has impeded species recovery. Desired species habitat conditions include 0-8% shrub cover, 12-40% cool-season grass cover, and 1-10% perennial forb cover. Cool-season grasses are critical for Utah prairie dogs because of high spring energy requirements. Past research suggested that reducing shrub cover may increase cover of desired grasses and forbs. From 2008-2010, I evaluated the effects of high intensity fall sheep grazing and low application of herbicide (tebuthiuron) as tools to reduce shrub cover and enhance grass and forb cover on the Awapa Plateau Utah prairie dog recovery area in south-central Utah. I placed 1700 ewes in 4 ha stratified and randomly selected plots until >70% vegetation utilization was achieved. Five additional randomly-selected plots were treated with tebuthiuron at a rate of ~1.68 kg/ha. Percent cover of grass, forbs, and shrubs was recorded on treatments and paired control plots in June 2009 and 2010 to determine treatment vegetation responses. I also affixed 22 juvenile Utah prairie dogs with radio transmitters to determine if over-winter survival differed relative to treatment. Live shrub cover was lower on grazed plots in year 1 (P<0.001) and in year 2 (P=0.015). Dead shrub cover in grazed plots was higher in year 1 (P<0.001). Grazed plots exhibited increased forb cover from year 1 (P=0.104) to year 2 (P=0.008). Live shrub cover was lower in herbicide plots in year 2 (P=0.002). Dead shrub cover in herbicide plots was higher in year 2 (P=0.006). Tebuthiuron and grazed plots exhibited a reduction in shrub height (P=0.010, P=0.026, respectively). Tebuthiron plots exhibited less grass cover (P=0.034). Intensive sheep grazing and a low application of tebuthiuron reduced both shrub cover and vertical structure, but failed to increase the percent of grass cover when compared to the control plots. All plots exhibited reduced grass cover in 2010 in response to below normal precipitation. However, percent grass cover was higher on the grazed plots. It is possible that low inherent site productivity in combination with below normal average precipitation compromised treatment effects. Because of radio transmitter failure, I was not able to obtain survival data after hibernation. Prairie dog counts and weights did not differ by treatment type. If climate change reduces overall precipitation on the Awapa Plateau, recovery of the Utah prairie dog on this site will be problematic.

Animal and Pasture Responses to Grazing Management of Chemically Suppressed Tall Fescue in Mixed PasturesWilliamson, Jessica A 01 January 2015 (has links)
Treatment of endophyte-infected tall fescue [Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.) Darbysh] with the broad leaf herbicide Chaparral® can mitigate fescue toxicosis and enhance forage quality by suppressing seedhead emergence. Applying the herbicide to fescue pastures also reduces forage mass and promotes severe spot grazing when pastures are continuously grazed. A grazing experiment was conducted with steers (2013) and heifers (2014) to evaluate animal and plant responses in fescue-bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) mixtures treated with Chaparral to determine the effects of grazing management on pasture carrying capacity, nutritive values, botanical composition, and animal performance. Continuous and rotational (i.e., four subdivisions to provide a 7-d grazing period and a 21-d rest period) grazing treatments were assigned to six, 3.0-ha fescue-bluegrass pastures in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Each pasture had six tester animals, and stocking rates were varied using put-and-take animals. Pastures were grazed from 16 April to 8 July 2013 (Year 1) and 20 May to 12 Aug (Year 2) and cattle were blocked by body weight for allotment to pastures. Pasture carrying capacities were greater (P = 0.07) for rotational compared to continuous pastures across both years. Calves on rotationally grazed pastures had greater average daily gain (P = 0.03) and gain per acre (P = 0.05) than those on the continuous treatment across both years. Canopies of continuously grazed pastures contained less (P = 0.01) tall fescue than those in rotationally grazed pastures. Herbage in pre-grazed paddocks had less NDF and ADF than post-grazed paddocks and continuously grazed pastures in 2013 (P < 0.10), but did not differ in 2014 (P > 0.10). In vitro digestible dry matter was greater (P = 0.07) in pre-graze rotational pastures in 2013 compared with continuous and post-graze rotational, and IVDDM did not differ (P < 0.01) between pre-graze rotational and continuous in 2014, but was greater than post-graze rotational. Crude protein was lower (P = 0.06) in both years in post-graze rotational pasture than in continuous or pre-graze rotational pasture, which did not differ. In 2013, there was no difference (P = 0.60) in root WSC among treatments; however, in 2014, WSC levels were greater (P = 0.01) in rotationally grazed pastures compared with continuously grazed pastures. This grazing experiment indicated that rotational grazing of Chaparral treated fescue-bluegrass mixtures can improve both animal performance and the sustainability of pasture productivity.
