El sector textil mundial, como se sabe, genera desperdicios a través de todos los procesos productivos, que, por lo general son manejados de manera inadecuada. Las empresas buscan implementar conciencia ambiental para que la producción se realice de manera eficiente y sostenible. Esta situación resulta de mayor impacto en las empresas textiles de menor envergadura, por ejemplo, las MYPES. Por ello, el presente artículo propone la aplicación de la filosofía Lean. Al respecto, se han realizado estudios que demuestran el impulso de esta filosofía al desarrollo Green, obteniendo resultados eficientes para las empresas. El objetivo de este trabajo es proponer un nuevo modelo Lean-Green, el cual está estructurado en seis fases: Fase 0 Formación del pensamiento ambiental, Fase 1 Estabilización de los flujos de valor, Fase 2 Identificación de los aspectos e impactos ambientales, Fase 3 Medir el flujo de valor ambiental, Fase 4 mejora de una corriente continua, Fase 5 mejora continua. La herramienta Lean que se implementará es el KAIZEN y, el modelo se validó en una empresa de confección textil, cuyos resultados implicaron un 25% de aumento en la producción y un 15% en la reducción del impacto ambiental. / As is known, textile industry produce wastes through all the production process that usually are poor handled. Businesses try to implement environmental awareness to make the production efficient and sustainable. This have more impact on small textile businesses like MYPES. Thus, this article propose the application of the Lean philosophy. There have been studies that this philosophy helps to develop the Green with great results for the business. The aim of this article is to propose a new Lean-Green model structured in six steps: Phase 0 create an environmental way of thinking, Phase 1 stabilization of flow values, Phase 2 recognition of environmental aspects and impacts, Phase 3 measure the environmental value flux, Phase 4 improvement of a continuous flow, Phase 5 continuous development. The Lean tool to apply is the Kaizen and the model have been validated on a textile production business. The results of this shows a 25% increase of the production and a 15% decrease of environmental impact. / Tesis

Geomorphology of the Green River in Dinosaur National MonumentGrams, Paul E. 01 May 1997 (has links)
Longitudinal profile, channel cross-section geometry, and depositional patterns of the Green River in its course through the eastern Uinta Mountains are each strongly influenced by river -level geology and tributary sediment delivery processes. We surveyed channel cross sections at 1-km intervals, mapped surficial geology, and measured size and characteristics of bed material in order to evaluate the geomorphic organization of the 70- km study reach. Canyon reaches that are of high gradient and narrow channel geometry are associated with the most resistant lithologies exposed at river level and the most frequent occurrences of tributary debris fans. Meandering reaches that are characterized by low gradient and wide channel geometry are associated. with river-level lithology that is of moderate to low resistance and very low debris fan frequency. The channel is in contact with bedrock or talus along only 42 percent of the bank length in canyon reaches and there is an alluvial fill of at least 12 m that separates the channel bed from bedrock at three borehole sites. The influence of lithology primarily operates through the presence of resistant boulders in debris fans that are delivered by debris flows from steep tributaries.
The depositional settings created by debris fans consist of (1) channel-margin deposits in the backwater above the debris fan, (2) eddy bars in the zone of recirculating
flow below the constriction, and (3) expansion gravel bars in the expansion below the zone of recirculating flow. These fan-eddy complexes are the storage location of about 70 percent. by area, of all fine- and coarse-grained alluvium contained within the canyons above the low-water stage. Immediately adjacent meandering reaches contain an order of magnitude more alluvium by area but have no debris fan-created depositional settings.
This study also describes the flood-plain and terrace stratigraphy of the Green River in the eastern Uinta Mountains and changes due to the operations of Flaming Gorge Dam, upstream from the study area. These landforms are vertically aggrading deposits that are longitudinally correlative throughout the 65-km study reach. The suite of surfaces identified includes a terrace that is inundated by rare pre- or post-dam floods, an intermediate bench that is inundated by rare post-dam floods, and a post-dam flood plain that is inundated by the post-dam mean annual flood. Analysis of historical photographs in the study reach shows that both the intermediate bench and post-dam flood plain are landforms that were not present in any of the 6 years for which photographs were examined between 1871 and 1954. Photographic replications also show that gravel bars consisting of bare gravel in 1922 and earlier photographs are now covered by fine-grained alluvium and vegetation . Decreased gravel-bar mobility is indicated by estimates of critical and average boundary shear stress. Comprehensive surficial geologic mapping of the study area indicates that the bankfull channel has decreased in width by an average of about 20 percent.

Analysis of the epiphytic bacterial community associated with the green alga Ulva australisTujula, Niina Amanda, Biotechnology & Biomolecular Sciences, Faculty of Science, UNSW January 2006 (has links)
Epiphytic bacterial communities on the surfaces of marine algae are poorly characterised. Most information available on marine bacterial epiphytes is derived from culture-based studies. With the rapid development of molecular community analysis technologies, it is now possible to obtain a more comprehensive picture of marine microbial populations on living surfaces. The intertidal macroalga Ulva australis, belongs to the cosmopolitan group of green marine algae (Ulvales) known to require the presence of bacteria for normal growth and has been suggested to employ specific bacteria for the defence against fouling by micro- and macro-organisms. This thesis has examined the composition and structure of the surface associated bacterial community on Ulva australis using 16S rRNA gene clone library, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), and catalysed reporter deposition ??? fluorescence in situ hybridisation (CARD-FISH) analysis. The 16S rRNA gene clone library revealed that the five main bacterial groups present in the surface associated community were Bacteriodetes, Planctomycetes, Alpha-, Gamma-, and Delta-Proteobacteria. Twenty-two sequence phylotypes were identified, suggesting that the epiphytic community was of relatively low diversity. A clone similar to an algal morphogenesis inducing Cytophaga strain was identified, indicating that U. australis harbours bacteria important for thallus structural maintenance. DGGE analysis showed that while the bacterial community varied over spatial and temporal (seasons) scales it also included a stable subpopulation consistently associated with the seaweed surface. Sequencing of selected DGGE bands suggested that members of the Alphaproteobacteria and the Bacteriodetes belonged to the stable subpopulation. Using CARD-FISH with different phylogenetic probes demonstrated that Alphaproteobacteria (~ 70%) and Cytophaga-Flavobacteria (~13%) constituted the majority of bacterial cells on the surface of U. australis. A comparison of the results provided by the molecular community analysis methods, employed in this thesis, and those of culturing of epiphytic bacteria from U. australis revealed that each approach provides different patterns of phylogeny and extent of diversity. For example, the culture collection and the clone library detected a relatively high amount of Gammaproteobacteria, however, DGGE and CARD-FISH did not. Also, low species diversity clone sequences and isolates of Alphaproteobacteria contrasted with the high numbers detected by the DGGE analysis. In addition to the phylogentic determination of the epiphytic bacterial community, CARDFISH was also used to assess the organisation and distribution of bacterial cells across different zonal regions on seaweed surface. It was found that approximately 40% of bacterial cells clustered in aggregates, or microcolonies. These aggregations were considered to be heterogeneous in composition and were mainly comprised of multiply species. The occurrence of more non-viable solitary single rather than aggregated cells suggests that aggregates might offer greater protection to bacterial cells from the harsh conditions in the intertidal zone. More broadly, CARD-FISH was found to be a useful tool for studying microcolonies and was also successfully applied to detect slow growing soil microcolonies cultivated using a novel soil substrate membrane system culturing technique without the need to perform an rRNA enrichment incubation. The findings in this thesis, as described from the application of a number of molecular community analysis techniques such as clone library, DGGE and CARD-FISH, have improved our understanding of the diversity and structure of the epiphytic bacterial community associated with U. australis. Morevover, the information provided may to design future studies in the ecology of bacteria-seaweed interactions, including symbiotic interactions, and aid in marine biotechnology applications such as identifying bacteria which produce bioactive secondary metabolites.

The main objectives of the present study were to investigate the mechanism by which green tea and its most abundant catechin constituent epigallocatechin gallate increase the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor of HepG2 cells. In addition, it was hoped to determine if a crude catechin extract from green tea could lower plasma cholesterol levels in the hypercholesterolaemic rabbit and ascertain if this effect was due to an increase in the LDL receptor. The study provides evidence that green tea and its catechins exhibit hypocholesterolaemic properties and may therefore provide protection against heart disease.

<p>The objective of this master thesis was to study the relation between public green open space and health among adolescents in Uppsala municipality, Sweden. The aim of the study was to investigate if there is an association between the access to green open space in the living environment and adolescent´s health, in terms of fysical activity, self- reported health and overweight. The public health questionnaire ”Liv och Hälsa Ung 2009” provided data together with a map over public green space, where the measure taken into account is the proportion of public green space in the living environment. The study includes 3423 adolescents, 12-19 years old. The statistical results indicate that access to public green space in the living environment is genrally not correlated to the health variables studied in this thesis. The author´s interpretation is that other health determinants are more crucial to adolescent´s health than green space, parents educationlevel is sugested as one. Further research is needed to support the findings of this study.</p> / <p>Syftet med föreliggande studie var att undersöka om det finns samband mellan tillgång till grönområden i boendeområdet och ungas hälsa (med avseende på fysisk aktivitet, självskattad hälsa och övervikt) i Uppsala kommun. Studien utgår i från redan befintliga data genom frågeformuläret ”Liv och Hälsa Ung 2009” som riktar sig till elever i årskurs 7 och 9 i högstadiet samt årskurs 2 i gymnasiet i Uppsala län. Studien omfattar 3423 elever i åldern 12-19 år. Med utgångspunkt i enkäten samt med hjälp av en karta över Uppsala kommuns grönområden undersöks måttet andel offentlig grönyta i boendeområden i förhållande till de valda hälsovariablerna. Sammanfattningsvis uppvisar resultatet få uppmätta samband mellan tillgång till grönområden i boendeområdet och de hälsovariabler som studerats. Författarens slutsats är att andra faktorer verkar vara viktigare för ungas hälsa, som exempelvis föräldrarnas utbildningsnivå. Det behövs dock fler studier genomföras för att bekräfta studiens fynd.</p>

The Binding Girdle: TrawÞe and Gift Exchange in Sir Gawain and the Green KnightSearcy, Deborah W. 01 January 2007 (has links)
Integrating chivalric romance narrative with complicated instances of pre-modern exchange, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight reveals the binding power of pledging one?s trawþe and the transformative power of exchanged objects in a gift economy. By reading the Exchange of Blows and the Exchange of Winnings according to the social demands of a gift economy and of a pledged trawþe, this thesis delineates the nature of Gawain?s failure to keep his word to his host. I offer my analysis of gift theory to suggest how the poem reveals the tensions between chivalric pledges of loyalty and nascent capitalist exchanges. R. A. Shoaf demonstrates the presence in the text of an emerging commercial economy, claiming the poem ?involves the transformation of Gawain?into a consumer and?into a merchant? (3-4). While Gawain behaves as a nascent capitalist, as evident by his passive reception of the exchanged items and his lack of generosity, the other residents of Hautdesert do not. The workings of gift exchange were first postulated by social anthropologists: Marcel Mauss focused on reciprocity, while Branislaw Malinowski, and later, Annette Weiner, argued that gift exchanges operate in a circular system, with repayment not necessarily directed toward the original donor. The exchanges between Bertilak and Gawain show elements of the requisite reciprocity of Mauss? formulation, yet the presence of Morgan le Fey and Lady Bertilak complicates the exchanges and suggests an economy of circularity. While Geraldine Heng and Sheila Fischer have argued that the women of the text exhibit agency?Morgan initiates the Exchange of Blows and Lady Bertilak gives kisses and the girdle?this project argues that it is the performative presence of the trawþe between Gawain and Bertilak that creates a male bond, ultimately denying the women authority. The trawþe circumscribes Morgan?s control and allows for the exchange of Lady Bertilak as an object. Richard Firth Green addresses the late medieval tensions in the semantic definitions of ?truth,? arguing that ?in an oral society the precise words of the oath?bind the speaker and listener by virtue of an inherent performative power? (60). While Gawain functions as a self-interested capitalist, keeping the girdle for its value to save his life, the chivalric trawþe ensures that failure to adhere to the terms of the agreement results not only in contractual liability but knightly disgrace. Gawain?s failure to reciprocate the gift leads to his dishonor, for the medieval gift that is not reciprocated ?would make the recipient dependent on the donor,? endangering ?his honour, freedom and even his life? (Gurevich 180). In medieval gift systems the values of exchanged objects are determined not only by their function within a competitive game about prestige and power, but also by their identification with the donors themselves. Annette Weiner?s articulation of the inalienability of certain objects?the possibility that some objects are ?kept? despite apparent exchange?is useful in explaining the significance of the girdle in Gawain?s failure. Weiner explains that what ?makes a possession inalienable is its exclusive and cumulative identity with a particular series of owners through time? (Weiner 33). The girdle presents just such an inalienable possession; Bertilak ?keeps? the girdle despite Gawain?s physical possession of it. Gawain remains indebted to his adversary, and although he is released from his trawþe, he will continue to wear the girdle as a sign of his failure and the bond with the Green Knight. Ultimately, the court of Camelot assumes the sign of the green girdle, a subtle warning by the Gawain-poet of the inevitable spread of un-trawþe in prioritizing the values of self-interested capitalist exchange.

Among most of the LEED registered and LEED certified health-care facilities, there is a credit variation between the LEED pilot checklist and the final checklist. The credit variation between the LEED pilot and final checklists implies failure in achieving the pre-defined green objectives. Most of the credits were given up due to financial reasons. Although most of the credits in the LEED credit list emerge as design issues, accomplishing a LEED rating is primarily the owner??s responsibility. In order to minimize the variation between the LEED pilot checklist and LEED approved checklist, the owner needs to conduct significant project planning. The owner should integrate the LEED objectives early in the project and should include the cost of the LEED process in the capital budget. Since there are limited LEED certified health-care projects, adoption of the systems approach for planning and developing a green health-care facility using the IDEF0 method is recommended. The IDEF0 method can produce an outcome array which represents the matrix of all possible circumstances. This will give the owner and the project team the ability to better forecast cost and schedule decisions, even when there is a lack of historical data relating to green health-care projects. The approach will be beneficial in analyzing the various outcomes, cost, and feasibility of projects in terms of integrating LEED objectives early on. This could minimize the credit variation, as well as cost and schedule overruns during the project execution stage. Adequately defining the full development process upfront is vital to the overall success of any project, especially for green buildings, since they are a developing trend in the construction industry.

Electrochemical deposition of green rust on zero-valent ironKulkarni, Dhananjay Vijay 16 August 2006 (has links)
Perchloroethylene (PCE) is a toxic contaminant that has been introduced into the environment over many years through industrial and agricultural wastes. Research has been done in the past to investigate PCE degradation by zero-valent iron (ZVI), green rust (GR) and a mixture of both. The combination of ZVI and green rust has been reported to be more effective for degrading PCE than either of them alone. Forming green rust electrochemically has the potential for depositing GR more effectively on the surface of ZVI where it will be able to more easily transfer electrons from ZVI to contaminants such as PCE. Therefore, the goal of this research was to determine the feasibility of electrochemically depositing green rust on zero-valent iron and to characterize it in terms of its composition, crystal properties and amount produced. XRD analysis was conducted to determine composition and crystal properties and a procedure was developed to measure the amount produced. Equipment was constructed to deposit green rust electrochemically onto ZVI. A chain of experiments with varying voltage, pH, time and amounts of ZVI were conducted to determine feasible experimental conditions for GR formation. Then, a method was developed to accurately measure the amount of surface oxides of iron deposited on the zero-valent iron substrate. This method was tested and found useful for measuring iron in: i) standard solutions of soluble iron with different concentrations of reagents; ii) suspensions with solid iron hydroxides by themselves; and iii) suspensions with solid iron hydroxides and ZVI. Electrochemical experiments were conducted and the amounts of iron hydroxides deposited on the ZVI surface were measured. XRD analysis of the deposits on the surface was conducted and the patterns of XRD-peaks were compared to that of type 2 Â sulfate green rust.
