No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 2178333 bytes, checksum: 979a231c6637e42d69936136ddf399c4 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-08-31 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Introduction: The starting point of our research object is a historical study of the view of the body, corporeality and spirituality through the Yoga tradition a documentary research correlated with changes in body perceptions expressed by the students of a Yoga class in the city of João Pessoa, between 2012 and 2013. Objective: Analyze the changing perceptions and spiritual body through the practice of Yoga - the awakening of spirituality, expressed by students in a class of Yoga, under an extension project. Methods: The methodological approach of this study includes a qualitative approach called descriptive and exploratory research, with the development of research tools adapted to the reality under study towards the social context of the subjects. We can consider that the great relevance of this Master Thesis is in combining a research of bibliographical character with field research, through the method of quasi-experimental research design, under a university extension program. In this sense, we can characterize our work also as an action-research. Analysis and Results: Within the total sample of questionnaires applied, 18 student questionnaires with minimum frequency were selected 70% by the end of the course. The selected students completed the questionnaires at two times during the Yoga course: in the beginning of the classes in October 2012 and at the end, in December 2012, with only one break, of almost three months 26 classes. After conducting a t-test for repeated measurements, no significant difference was verified in the pre and post-test means as a function of the scale factors (p>0.05). This result suggests that there has been no regression or progress in spiritual well-being (Bem Estar Espiritual BEE) in any of the factors of those practicing Hatha-Yoga during the period of the extension program. Conclusions: Thus, we can verify that the statements composing this ethnographic research corroborate for one of the initial objectives of the research, which is precisely to analyze the relationship between the theory and the practice of Yoga with the changes in spiritual and body perception the awakening of spirituality expressed by the students of a Yoga class in a university extension program (PROBEX). However, we believe that the great merit of our research is not exactly in the statistical results obtained from the BEE questionnaire, but in the very use of this questionnaire in a pioneer way with no previous publications, in an academic research about Yoga in Brazil. given these findings, we can associate the sense of body-corporeality of the human being to the physical posture signs of Yoga, through body and cognitive capturing of the practice, ideas and concepts reflected in concrete reality, such as the posture before the world, the people, personal and spiritual experiences, combining with the personal, community, environmental and transcendental factors of the BEE analysis. Keywords: Yoga, Hatha-Yoga, body, spirituality.

Comparison of acute heart rate variability responses to relaxation alone vs. relaxation preceded by Hatha yoga

Unknown Date (has links)
The objective of this study was to compare the acute heart rate variability responses to relaxation alone versus relaxation preceded by Hatha yoga. Twenty women and men (aged 18-50 years) participated in the study. Participants completed a yoga plus relaxation (YR) session and a relaxation only (R) session. The YR condition showed significant changes from baseline in HR (bpm, p < 0.001), RR (ms, p < 0.001), pNN50 (%, p = 0.009), LF (% p = 0.008) and HF (% p = 0.035). The R condition showed significant changes from baseline in HR (bpm, p < 0.001), RR (ms, p < 0.001), HF (ms2, p = 0.004), LF (%, p = 0.005), HF (%, p = 0.008) and LF/HF (%, p = 0.008). There were no significant differences between conditions for the changes from baseline for any of the variables. The results demonstrate that relaxation produces favorable changes in indices of heart rate variability whether alone or preceded by about of Hatha yoga. / by Nina Markil. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2010. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. Angst, Depressivität und Fatigue bei Tumorpatienten sechs Monate nach Beendigung einer Yogaintervention / Long-term changes of symptoms of anxiety, depression and fatigue in cancer patients six months after the end of yoga therapy

Lundt, Anna January 2018 (has links) (PDF)
Background: Symptoms of anxiety, depression and cancer-related fatigue are commonly associated with cancer. Cancer patients increasingly use complementary and alternative treatments, such as yoga, to cope with psychological and physical impairments. In the present work, long-term changes of anxiety, depression and fatigue in cancer are examined six month after a yoga intervention. Method: We used an observational design based on a randomized controlled study in cancer patients with mixed diagnoses to evaluate long-term changes of symptoms of anxiety, depression and fatigue six month after the end of yoga therapy. We measured anxiety symptoms with the General Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-7), depressive symptoms with the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2) and fatigue with the European Organization for Research and Treatment in Cancer Fatigue Scale (EORTC- QLQ-FA13). The yoga therapy was delivered in weekly sessions of 60 minutes each for 8 weeks. The exercises provided contained both body and breathing exercises as well as meditations. Results: A total of 58 patients participated in the study. Six month after the end of yoga therapy, symptoms of anxiety, depression and fatigue were significantly reduced compared to baseline. However, symptoms of anxiety and fatigue slightly increased during the follow-up period, whereas symptoms of depression remained stable. Conclusion: Our results are promising and support the integration of yoga interventions in supportive cancer treatment concepts, but should be confirmed by randomized controlled trials. Long-term effects of yoga therapy on cancer patients should be the subject of further research.

The effect on the self concept of female college students of participation in Hatha Yoga and effective interpersonal relationships development classes

Rudolph, Susan Gove January 1981 (has links)
The intent of this research was to determine if participation in regularly offered Hatha Yoga or Effective Interpersonal Relationship Development classes for the duration of a university quarter (ten weeks) could produce a change in self-concept.Self-concept was defined as the total collection of attitudes, judgments and values which an individual holds with respect to behavior, ability, body, and worth as a person; i.e.self-perception and self-evaluation. Specifically, self-concept was defined as that entity which is measured by the self-report of the discrepancy between perceived self and ideal self using the Index of Adjustment and Values.Data for the study were collected from 215 female students enrolled in a mid-western university who volunteered to participate and who completed the self-concept measure (Bills Index of Adjustment and Values) at the beginning and end of the quarter. There were 54 female students in 3 Yoga classes, 53 in 3 Effective Interpersonal Relationship Development classes and 53 in 4 comparison classes (randomly selected algebra classes). Experimental treatment consisted of material which was normally taught in the classes. Information such as age, quarter in school and other subjects taken was collected with a demographic survey.A second group of 55 female students in 3 Hatha Yoga classes taught the following year completed the pretest and posttest self-concept measures, and also answered a Student Opinion Questionnaire.Analysis of variance of the pretest data across all classes and groups indicated no significant differences, providing an assumption of equivalence of the groups. Repeated measures analysis of variance showed a significant difference on the self-concept measure between the pretest and posttest data (p =.015). The test for simple main effects indicated that only the Hatha Yoga group contributed significantly (p =.01) to the results.Individual group repeated measure analyses indicated significant change in self-concept for the Hatha Yoga group (p =.006) but not for the Effective Interpersonal Relationship Development group (p =.08), although there was a tendency toward a positive self-concept change, or for the comparison group (p =.36). A significant difference between the pretest and posttest also found for the second Hatha Yoga group (p =.043). The majority of students who answered the Student Opinion Questionnaire felt that participation in the Hatha Yoga class had helped them become more self-aware, to feel better about themselves and to solve personal and/or physical problems.

Yoga A Guide to Harmonious Self Development

Ponkshe, Hari D 01 January 1959 (has links) (PDF)
There are many books on Yoga as it has become a fascinating subject of study for many scholars of Yoga. It is an interesting field of study for many scholars. There are many types of Yoga, however, in this thesis only Hatha-Yoga and Raja-Yoga will be considered in detail, Hatha-Yoga and Raja-Yoga will always remain interested in their attempts to give certain physical and mental characteristics to the physical body by certain types of physical exercises and to the mental structure by different types of mental exercises. These physical and mental exercises will develop the process of concentration of mind, the object of which when properly focused, will lead to the attainment of Self-Realization.

Scheffer, Chantelle Nadine 30 November 2005 (has links)
Ten selected yoga movements were successful applied in Gestalt Therapy to promote adolescent girls' awareness. The girls were between seventeen and eighteen years old. A review of the existing literature exercises indicated the value of meditation, breathing exercises, and relaxation exercises in the Gestalt therapeutic process. Hatha yoga however, offers a variety of movements that can be extracted and used as a resource for the promotion of awareness in the Gestalt therapeutic process. A case study method where research was only used as a tool to gain better insights concerning the use of yoga movements was followed. The study results indicated that awareness of the body, posture; muscles tension, the self, and the environment were promoted. After yoga movements were used as introduction to the session, the social experience of the group discussion afterwards seemed to have been positive. This form of awareness creation can contribute to adolescent girls' process of become aware in Gestalt Therapy. / Social Work / (M. Ed.)Play Therapy)
